  1. I just purchased some AP1s and I can't wait for them to get in.  I purchased 4-PW and W.

The PW has a very strong loft (44 degree) and I also purchased the (gap) W with a 48 degree loft.  I don't know what I want to do with rest of my wedges to complete the bag.  I currently have a 56 and 60 degree Vokeys but that's too big of a difference between 48 and 56.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

To stay with the 4* range you would need a 52*......if you choose to carry that many wedges......if you are a low handicapper you may need that many wedges....I am a nine handicapper and have chosen to do away with my 60* wedge and have gone old school with a 56*, 50*, and 46* PW......and have gone with a 4* gap with the rest of my irons......works well for me.....I sold the 60* so I would not be tempted to put it back in the bag and I play 3 - 4 rounds a week......if you know you distances and have confidence in your clubs, that is what matters.......at 68 I play from the Senior Tees and use those three wedges a lot on par 4s.....talk to a fitter or your pro and see what advice they offer......my advise would be if you are a middle double digit handicapper, I would have a 52 and a 56......just an opinion........ I personally think a 60* or higher wedge is for the more advanced player that plays many rounds of golf weekly......

I got mine, 4-P, W48, W52, and just an additional 56*.   I had 4-P 1* strong, and left both the W's standard loft.  I prefer having just the 56* to keep things simple, so having the 48 and 52 was no brainer.

I have all my irons 5-9 1* strong and I also carry a 48, 52, and a 56 I believe this works for me and any others. I am 68 and have a 3 handicap, I tried using a 60* for about 3 months and it was a huge mistake. I don't believe you need a 60* wedge for the amount of times you are going to use it..

I have exactly the same set of AP1's. I use a Vokey 54 degree and 58. That setup works for me and may benefit you.

How you use the lower lofted wedges is an important factor. 4 degrees is only a starting point. I have the 714 AP1 9I set to 42, a 48->47 Vokey, a 52->51 Vokey, and a 56 Vokey set to 55. I switch between a 5W and a 58 Vokey. If I had more use for a lob wedge, I'd think about a 60 instead of the non-conforming 58 spin-mill. I use the PW and GW more than the 9I and the SW. I really found a wedge fitting of value to work on distance gaps, full swings versus partial swings, and typical playing conditions - so the fitter steer me towards a better working model for me.

Thank you for this thread posting.  This is the exact question I was pondering.  I currently have a Vokey SM 60* that I think I am going to trade in for a 52*.  That should round out my set quite well.  It seems like I skulled that 60 as much as I hit it well.  Sometime I wondered why it was in the bag for that one or two shots a round.

Loving this site for its information

I just bought the same iron set up and I had a 56* and 60* too. It was too much of a gap so I went to a 52* an 58*. So far very happy with my choice.

I too tried to do proper gaps I play 5-6  in ap1s 7-pw. In ap2s. I added 50degree vokeywedges  and a 54 sand wedge  as different lofts in the two different clubs types . Being an older golfer I choose this set up just to you an idea of what you can do that's best for you

I have a set of 714 AP1 irons, consisting of 5-GW, and then I have Vokey 52, and 56 degree wedges to finish it.  Has worked out just fine for me and one of the local professionals helped me add the GW 48 to the set when I had to large a gap.  But you might be different, so good luck, hope you find a set that works for you.

I have the same iron set up....what worked best for me was adding a Vokey 52 and 58....the 52 is a solid 100 yard club for me and the 58 gives me a little more distance when I'm at the 65 yard and in distance. The 58 is great as a lob wedge and for green side bunkers...

I have the same set up with the AP1's and I use a Vokey 54 and 58. It seems to work for me as I have been using that setup for quite some time now. It did take me a while to get used to the 48* gap wedge though. Definitely different than the 50* I had been use to.

As some of the others have replyed, i went with a 54 and a 58.  That works good for me,but i spent a lot of range time with the 48 hitting to different yardages starting with full shots and then dailing it down.

  20. I'm 68 8 handi-cap and use Volkey 54 and 60.  Play what suits you best.

I bought the same AP1's last year.  I was very happy with the 4-PW, yet not very pleased with the 48 or 52.  So I replaced the 48 and 52 with a Vokey SM5 50.08 F-Grind, and an SM5 56.10 S-Grind, both with the same True Temper XP95 shafts as the 4-PW.  Also to match the 4-PW, I had the lengths shortened by -0.25 and the lies changed to 2-degrees up.  I now believe I have the perfect setup for me.  I can easily open up the 56.10 S-Grind to hit the occasional flop shot (eliminating my 60-degree) and the 50.08 F-grind is the perfect gap wedge. Both are great from the sand as well.

In my opinion, one consideration most amateurs like us overlook is "bounce," as we're totally focused on "loft" gaps.  While my "lofts" from 6-iron to SW are 29, 32, 36, 40, 44, 50 and 56, the corresponding "bounce" gap in degrees are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10.  The AP1 48 and 52 lofted wedges both offered only 7-degrees of "bounce."  The additional "bounce" (8-degree and 10-degree) on both SM5's has made a huge difference for me.  When I special-ordered the SM5's (at different times) they each arrived in one week.

I have 910 AP-1's 5-pw. I had the 7-pw set 1* stronger to get ready for the 716's. I have the new Vokey's 48*, 52*, 56* 60*. Perfect 10 yard difference. I love the 60*, perfect for that short sided pin shot. I am a senior golfer so the drives don't go too far. The Vokey gaps are great for getting up and down.

I have the same set up but filled in the Gap with a 52 degree. 4 gaps different. This is a good set up. 48,52,56, 60 all fits nice together.

  26. Abe    bein the  Pw  is stronger   that means  9 is also  and so on down the line  so drop  the four and add  a 52  keepin the 56  n 60  your allready used to  and have served you well  dont bendem!! instead get onto   Terry Dills  short game procedure    four  moves 1  handsn arms only  20 yds with 60*   hands n arms add the hip 30  yds   hands hip  shoulder 40 yds   finally han hip  shoulder  club to 9 oclock in b swing for 50 yarder     then take  56   same body parts to achieve  23 yds  33 yds  43 yds  53 yds etc..  52degree gapper might be  27  37  47  57 yds  its a great system for those who hav no system  or guess to feel llength of b'swing then hit shots over green or way short!!!  scores will decrease  note these  are my yardages   yours may differ  also make sure your wedges are incrementally shorter  in length as they  increase in loft   side tip  try using the same grip on your putter as on all your AP1's your constantly handling 13 clubs with round grio  while not try   it on putter!!!!!  your PARDS  Johnny  C

I've got a similar setup. I originally used a 52* and 56*, as many have suggested already. I do own a 60* wedge, but at my skill level, I found myself rarely using it, as I was better off with other clubs. I'd have to carry 15 clubs if I kept the 60* in the bag. I mostly use 53* and 58* wedges, though not Titleist. They are miz wedges, but I find them as good as any other brand, including Titleist. You can always take your wedges to a shop and have the loft bent slightly to fit your needs. If you like that lob wedge, perhaps you could soften the 52* and your current 56* by one degree. Of course, your now 57* sand wedge won't have a low bounce, but it should still work well off most lies except hard pan. If you don't like it, you can always have them bent back to spec.

Trade the 4 iron for a 52. Twenty-five years ago, todays 4-irons were called 2-irons and your 44 was an 8 iron. In the early 1990's, png took a 48 degree, 35-1/2" inch nine iron, called it a pitching wedge and every one gained ten yards with the new png irons. Longer and stronger. Still wonder how tour pros hits 150 yard pitching wedges? Well wonder no more - they are hitting a 44 degree, 36 inch iron with a W stamped on it.

Get fitted!  I was fitted at TPI in Oceanside and what a difference.  There is more to selecting wedges than just the lofts.  The proper bounce for each club is just as important.  Being able to sample all possibilities will give you the correct feel and confidence you need to properly play your wedges.
