Does anyone know why the extra stiff shafts are not available in stores and only available as a "custom order"?? That just seems a little strange to me.

Retail shops will order what they show they will readily sell. It may be that the store that you went to does not feel they will sell X flexes and prefers to order them when requested. As long as all the components are in stock, a custom order will take about 3 days to build and then shipping time.
