What is you club head speed?

I have no idea, our course pro does not have any equipment to measure that.

When I was fitted for my clubs I got to see all kinds of data related to my swing.  This enabled him to set me up with the correct equipment and to maximize my swing.  I will be 69 in September, hit my driver around 250, which I am comfortable with from the middle of the fairway and my club swing is 93 mph.  Club head swing helps generate distance.

You don't really need a launch monitor to measure club head speed.  Once you know the average distance that you get for a particular club, just consult a web site like Swing Man Golf.  I know my club head speed for every club in my bag. Interestingly, or maybe not, club speed increases for shorted shafted, higher loft clubs.  I have a higher club head speed for my wedges than I do for my irons than I do for my fairway wood and driver.

Hi Gordon; The AP2s are a great set of tools. Although I have only tested them in preparation for a future club, they are excellent and a solid set of clubs. In any case, it sounds as if you have answered an important part of the issue yourself. As we all know, an off centered hit to a ball will not deliver or transfer the power onto the ball. The other issue might be what Chuck mentioned- fitting is an integral step to take to zero in and find your best in order to perform at your personal best. Best. _n.

I am 52(same build)and play standard specs - no distance issue's. Some days my flexibility is limited, I will on occasion come out of the shot a little and hit it on the toe or thin. The overall weight of the club can also cause swing issue's, fatigue? Every player is unique & Titleist sells a wide range of irons shafts/weights. You may want to see a fitter and demo some lighter - higher launching iron shafts, as the S300 you currently play are 128g - low launch/spin with stiff tip. I only suggest this as I noticed that you seem to hit your woods well with Mid/High launch softer tip shafts.

What shaft options are available for the AP2 irons? I was asked if I wanted stiff or regular flex steel shafts by our pro and was not given any other choices. It would be nice to go with the Rogue shafts similar to what I have in my drivers.

  9. Hi Gordon,

I'm playing AP2 custom fitted by a Titleist fitter. Titleist offer roughly 5-6 different shaft options. I was previously playing with the standard S300's and when I purchased my AP2's I ended up selecting the new True Temper X95 S300 shaft, it's an 95 g shaft, increased swing speed by 5-8 mph. There are 2 other XP series shaft, XP105 (105 g) and XP115 (115g). KMS and ProjectX are also available with Titleist.

Always when custom fitting your clubs ensure its with a Titleist rep as they come with all the shaft options you can choose from and also try.

There are too many to list, it would be very good to see a fitter that has the Titleist fitting cart & launch monitior. I personally play the 120g PX shaft, any lighter and I have to watch out for the lefts, however that's me, I know players that are the exact opposite. As far as matching a rogue black, you may want to look at the KBS Tour 90 or C-taper lite, PXi possible or it could be the NS Pro models or XP models shafts??? I will say that strengthening lofts to achieve distances is not what I would recommend. *TW played his irons at a 1*- 2* weaker lofts or the old standard.

  11. I play the CB's and get great distance for me....but three of my friends play the AP2's and they all have stated the length they were used to has been reduced by 1 club length from their previous sets of TM, PG and CWY. BUT, they have never shot better scores. They are down the middle on more shots and are more consistent. To me, golfers are so stuck on length, they forget what really matters. If Speith felt this way, he would not be half the golfer he is today. The AP2's consistently are not as long as other brands but may be the best club out there. Just go with it

I forgot to mention that my old irons were DTR with S300 shafts and I had good distance with them.

I will have to find a Titleist fitter close by who has all the tools to analyze my swing and recommend the correct shaft to compliment my swing.

    Destin,

I found my problem to be missing the sweet spot of the club, not necessarily thinning or shanking it but just off the center. Sometimes the "miss hits" cost me one club of distance, but Lord help me, I still love them.

  14. I suggest you have a fitter check the club length and loft of both clubs. I think you will find the AP2's have approx. 1.5-2 degree more loft which will account for your distance loss from each club. Hit for hit clube length and loft determine distance.

And the fitter can always adjust that loft to match the DTRs, if he thinks that will help.  I have my AP2s set at AP1 lofts.

  16. compare the lofts between the 2 sets. You may find the ap2's have 1.5-2 deg. more loft than the dtr's which will account for some distance loss

Gordon - I agree with everyone's responses.  They all offer very sound advice.   You need to make an appointment with a certified Titleist fitter.   It needs to be done outside where you can see ball flight and where it lands.   Your distances are not that bad.  But it would be good to pick up about 5 yards on the irons and 5 - 10 with the woods.   Also ask the fitter to recommend a ball as well at least for starters.  Then you can follow Titleist's process and advice to select the right ball based on performance from a 100 yards in to the hole. Once all that is decided (and purchased), stick with it no matter what for at least 6 months of routine play (average at least 1.5 rounds per week). Do not change anything. As you learn your clubs, how they react and the distances, your confidence will increase and your scores will decrease.  My bet is your distances will increase enough to suit you.  Another thing - don't worry about what club others are hitting from the same distances.   Lofts and shaft lengths vary among manufacturers. Whenever I am asked what iron I just hit, I respond by telling the distance that I normally hit that club, not the number on the sole.  I am 60 years old, 4 handicap, and have had my custom fitted 714 AP2's for 19 months.   The thought of changIng has never entered my mind.   I hope this helps.  Good luck.

I had the same issue with DG S300's on my AP2's.  I couldn't get the ball to spin and everything came out low.  Made the switch to XP95's in the S300 and its night ad day.  I am back to 150 9 irons, with spin and can control trajectory, 195 yard 5 iron that actually bounces and stops with both a ProV1 or ProV1x.  I couldn't be happier.

Try out some other shafts with a fitter.  You have to invest the time to get results with these awesome sticks.  Once you do you will love them

    Cheers

Don't have an answer for you, but I have the same problem with my AP1's.  Lost a whole club is distance.  Blame some of it on age and location, sea level.  But am concerned!
