MB 714 Question

  1. Hello all.

I have recently done a club compare to decide what irons I should get. I am an 11 handicapper who has always played game improvement irons. I hit the MB 714, the CB 714 and the AP2s and out of the 15 shots I did with each of them, the MB 714s blew them out of the water.

My question is how will the MBs translate to a golf course setting as I take a decent divot when hitting my irons. Will I still be able to get decent distance (the MBs were the longest I hit) or will I notice some issues given the divot I take?

Just skeptical that the MB 714s are right for me.

Distance is only one measure. MB aren't very forgiving if you have bad days hitting off the toe. If you were hitting off of mats, you really need to hit from grass to make a decision. RM plays blades and Jordan plays AP2s. So it is both a preference (do you love the look and feel?) and an acknowledgement of your skill at ball striking on moving from GI to forged to blades.

Because the MB 714 irons are blades, it is very hard to make solid contact with the ball. Since it is, I would not recommend them for a player at your handicap. I would definitely recommend the AP2s.

I would suggest that you go see a Titleist Fitter and get a proper fitting. This will be the best way for you to determine the clubs that will help you play your best golf.

Absolutely, 100% agree with this statement.  Get all the facts and the numbers that apply specifically to your swing.  As they say "the numbers don't lie".....

I agree with the comments above. While the MB & CB are not very forgiving compared to the AP2, you need to get a fitting from a certified Titleist fitter on a grass range where you can see the true ball flight, know if you hit fat/thin and then gauge your decision. I've hit the 714CB at a local store and felt the same as you. However, I realize that these irons are above my skill level with an index floating between 11-13. It's still going to be fun to go through the process and hit lots of different clubs with different shaft configurations. Take your time and get the one that will help you get to the level you want to reach. You certainly don't want to have to go through this process again next year if you select the wrong set. Steve

Josh I have the MB 714's and love them.  Since 1970 I have had three sets of irons, two sets are blades and one was a cavity back.  I hit the 714's better than any irons I have ever owned.  Truth is that when I'm having an off day the club style doesn't matter.  So far as distance goes, on days when I'm fully rested and playing well I can full swing my standard PW out to 150 yards.  So far as divots go, I have always taken a fairly shallow divot since most of the courses I play have hard clay under the grass.  It would be great if you could play a round with a set of MBs, if you are near eastern Ohio I'd let you experience my MBs.

    Hi josh,

if your going to get blades you will need to get fitted.

im playing with a set of MBs 714 and love them

distance should not factor in when buying clubs ,if you hit it a mile into a bad spot and need to hit the ball around a object doesn't help if your clubs have have little workability.

Buy the set that will help you achieve lowering your handicap.

i just my local pros MBs for a couple of rounds as I was unsure

As others have mentioned your best bet is took fit off of grass. Having said that, one consideration given your comment about deeps divots is to stick with a club with a wider sole. You likely have a steeper angle of attack given your deep divots. The MBs have quite a narrow sole width relative to the CBs and AP2s so I recommend going with CB or AP2. I can't see why you would hit the MBs any farther than the other models assuming the lofts/shafts were the same etc...
  10. Josh, i picked up the MB's this year and what a difference it has been. The clubs really force you to hit out of the center of the club and with enough patience and practice you will be hitting the irons in the sweet spot in no time. i was using rocket bladez before i picked these up. Its not a huge difference but even during the fitting i was hitting the MBs 5 yards farther per club. I am sure its much farther now but i traded those in.

what really drove me to the MBs though was the loft per each club. very traditional loft settings. the 4 and 5 iron became easier to hit, increasing my confidence and in return lowering my scores.

And on a side note, a pure shot with these clubs, you can't even feel it in your hands, like slicing butter smooth. and the sound is amazing. and the clubs are gorgeous

go for it, you wont regret it

Last year I began mixing my bag with 712 AP2 (3-6) and 714 MB (7-9) and I wish I would have bought MB 3-6 because I hit them substantially better. I ran into gap issues because I was hitting my 7 iron farther than my 6 iron. I love the MBs so I just ordered the rest of the bag.
