  1. Looking for some advice on whether or not it's time to upgrade my 15 yr. old Titleist 990 irons.  I play about a 12 handicap on 8-12 rounds a year.  Debating whether or not it's worthwhile from a scoring/feel/distance perspective to upgrade to 714 cb.  Have about a 10-yd step in my irons PW-130 yds -- to -- 4-Iron-190 yds.  Any thoughts or insights?

Go see a certified fitter and take your old six iron with you.  The 716s will be out in about three months, so why not wait until the latest technology is available.   These folks are very good and you will be glad you did a fitting.

I still play 990-B's. The 716 CB's look very similar to our 990's and I'll probably pick up a set when they're released. Good to hear someone else appreciates the 990's.

  4. Yeah,

I really like my irons, but worry I may be giving up distance/touch with 15 year old clubs.  Time to hit Golf Galaxy and see if there's enough difference to justify the expense.

Chance, just a few thoughts for you to consider: 1. I've been going through the same debate with my 14 year old 981s. 2. as stated, you might want to consider waiting for the 716s to be available (fittings start 09/01). this might also make the 714s a bit tougher to get. 3. when hitting balls into the nets, keep in mind the carry distance and the roll-out distance. If possible, you might look to get fit at an outdoor facility. 4. look at the lofts on the new irons. many manufacturers have strengthened the lofts and this often can create gaps, especially in the wedges. Good luck and enjoy the process. Steve

I would also add that if you are going to a fitter, you may find it worthwhile to be open about other possibilities such as the new 716 AP2's in addition to the CB's. Also, if you are going to get fitted with a Titleist fitter, take the time to explore the various different shaft options, etc. Take full advantage of the Trackman for some good insight into your swing and the various performance characteristics of the club/shaft combinations. AND ABOVE ALL, have some fun and enjoy yourself!

    Hi Chance,

Keep them, they play just as well. And if you have the finances to easily afford the 714s, get them. They are amazing. I own both the 990 irons with the original 6.0 FCM rifle shafts and the 714 cb with the xp95.

Because the 990s are so old, you will not get that much for them, so they are not worth selling, better to use them as loaner clubs, or practice clubs at the range.

Also, you know how we have an adjustable loft and interchangeable shaft on our drivers? Why not give yourself some options with your irons too? Hard and fast greens? Use the irons with higher launch and spin. Windy? Us the irons with the more penetrating flight. Heading to a sketchy course? Bring the cheaper set. A lot of hard pan on the course? Use the harder casted heads so the finish on the forged ones do not get scraped off. etc etc
