TT, curious of CB users who switched to AP2s or AP2 users who switched to CBs. Differences in feel, yardage, forgiveness, etc... I look forward to any feedback you may have. Marc (TTEP) Team Titleist El Paso :)

  2. In terms of yardage there isn't much difference between the CB and the AP2's.  You might get a bit more distance with the AP2's.  The main difference though is that you get more forgiveness with the AP2's.  What this means is that if you don't quite connect with the ball the shot will turn out worse with the CB's then the AP2'S .  CB's though are definitely easier to control in the air and if you can connect with them the contact the club head makes with the ball is really nice.

I went from the AP2s to a combo set of CB/MB.  I like the more compact head of the CB compared to the AP2, and the feel at impact is better, in my opinion.  I much prefer the look at address, and find it a lot easier to move the ball left to right with the CB, with no noticeable loss of distance since switching, except maybe on the worst mishits.  The AP2 is a fine iron, but I felt the feedback was more muted, and prefer the CB/MB overall.

Hello, Now that combo really interests me. I've always played with blades from day 1 since starting this game 20 years ago. Still have my 681's I play with. The combo set well worth going for ? And the feel of the 4-6 CB's with Tungsten added... again nice to hit ? Thanks in Advance..

You should -definitely- look into the CB/MB combo.  It is the best of both worlds, for sure.  The lofts match up perfectly, and the feel is almost identical from shot to shot.

I am looking forward to hitting the new tungsten-assisted CBs myself.

This is the exact set in the 716's I'm going to get fit for on Saturday. I recently about a month and half ago got the 714 AP2's. I switched from the VR Pro Blades and while I love the feel of the AP2's I'm not crazy about the feedback or lack of from my experiences. I actually just started a thread kind of about the same thing as well. On the blades if I don't catch pure I knew exactly where on the face I caught it and I prefer that. The AP2's just about everything feels solid except for thin shots which you'll feel on any club.

    fort mcmurray,

I went from AP2's 710 to my current sticks CB 712's. I liked the look and feel better and according to Flightscope they had slightly less spin and slightly longer, probably because of less spin, for my swing. You know when you don't hit the CB's on the sweet spot, but when you do, its very nice feeling.

My handicap has dropped a little each year and is currently a 1.7 index. I do find the 4 iron not very for giving. Last year I put a 712u 4 iron which worked well.

I am fairly sure I will end up the new CB716's I think that Tungsten in the longer irons should be perfect for me. Having said that I will test the AP's and look at all the data.

I haven't hit the 714's in either model. Mainly until this year the CB's have had minimal improvements, mainly cosmetic.

Played both models 714CB irons had solid feel vs 712 AP2 irons. The AP2 irons are more forgiving and longer distance. I found that I had to be careful with the AP2 when shooting at the back pin locations, not to fly it too far. Personally I opted for the new 716 CB model for more control on those partial shots. With the new 716 CB having added the tungsten weights of the ap2's, increasing the forgiveness will be perfect fit for my game.

I feel that the CBs are almost the same as the MBs, just with a touch of perimeter weighting due to the cavity back.

Distance will vary depending on your swing, shaft selection, etc, but there shouldn't be too much difference between the two. The AP2 lofts are marginally stronger, but again your results may vary. There is no question the AP2s are more forgiving, but depending on your ball striking you may prefer the CB. Guys on tour play both, so my $.02 is to opt for the more forgiving option because I don't play for a living and I can still work the ball plenty with an AP2. But to each their own.

Personally, I prefer the AP2's. I loved the CB's, but I hit them VERY high, and was a full club shorter. The AP2's had a much lower spin rate, and ball flight. Being 49 at the time, and swinging slower, I chose the AP2's. My ego still likes hitting a 9 from around 150.....Some things never change...LOL

Have had many sets of Titleist irons starting with 962's, MB first gen., many CB's and currently play a mix of 735 CB (2-iron) and 714 CB 3-W. Plenty of good scores in the mid 70's this year but plan on getting 716 AP2 +716MB 2-iron next year. Would like more help on misfits and can live with less feel. Went from 735 CB to First gen. AP2's and had best season that year.

I went from 735CM combo set to 714 AP2's. I was told I would hit the AP2's farther, but I didn't, I do hit them higher though, which I like. I like 'em both, but enjoy the AP2's more now. I keep the CM's at my folks house for vacation golf.
  14. I think a factor that isn't brought up much is spin. When you move weight to the perimeter you gain a larger MOI but sacrifice spin. If you ever wonder why tour players are spinning their approach shots than you are, they can compress the ball more but they are also more likely hitting with a blade with all the weight right behind the ball.
