Hi TT!  I'm looking for some input here before my iron fitting (at Westfields Fitting Studio) next week.  I'm 53, 12 handicap, 100mph driver swing speed, hit my current 6 iron (714 AP1 with SteelFiber i95 R shaft) 165 yards, and play ~100 rounds/year.  My last three iron sets have been 710 AP1, 712 AP1, and 714 AP1.  I hit the 714 AP2 at my last iron fitting two years ago, but concluded I still needed the extra forgiveness of the AP1.  With the AP1 and AP2 changes in the 716s, I plan to look very closely at both of them.  I'm thinking that I would like to go with the AP2s, to get the more compact look and forged feel, if I can do so without giving up the distance and forgiveness I am getting from my current 714 AP1s. I am thinking this may be better for me overall than adding much more distance, compared to my current irons.  It would also let me stick with my 50-08 Vokey wedge.  (I may shift from my current 56-11 and 62-07 to 54-10 and 60-07, to close the gap between my 50-08 and my next wedge, and because I don't hit the 62-07 very often.)  If I go with the 716 AP1s, I am thinking that I will need to change my gap wedge to 48-08 (to close the distance from the pitching wedge to the gap wedge), and then still go with the 54-10 and 60-07.

I like the SteelFiber i95 shafts a lot, and will probably stick with them (and i110 in my wedges).  Although I plan to hit both R and S flexes.  I was surprised when I got fit for my 915 driver, 3-wood, and hybrids last year that I ended up with S flex shafts (had played R up to that point), so am interested to see whether the same shift to S flex will make sense with my irons.  I also plan to try the KBS Tour, Tour-V, C-Taper Lite, and Tour-90 shafts for comparison.

Any thoughts on any of this that I should consider ahead of my fitting?  Thanks!

  2. Hello, You seem to know what you want, and the only thing can challenge the SteelFiber (95i or 110i) will be the Recoil-PROTOTYPE from ust-mamiya. It's a full graphite shaft, the feeling provide is smoother than the steelfiber with a lower flight. I think it's a nice shaft to consider in your list. You should try F4 or F5 (both are consider as stiff, but F4 is like a Firm so between regular and stiff). Good luck Let's us know your final choice Benoit

Just to keep an open mind, and don't focus too much on shaft brand or their marketing, but just on the feel and feedback you get from each shaft.  I went in thinking I -knew- exactly which shaft I would like and which ones I would hate, and ended up absolutely -loving- my 'last choice'.  I actually asked my fitter to -not- tell me which shaft I was hitting until after I was done.

I've found that the KBS shafts tend to play strong for their flex, so you may just end up staying with the R flex, after all.  It will depend on your tempo and transition.

The new AP2s are crazy forgiving, with the addition of the tungsten perimeter weighting.  I think you'll see a lot more people moving from AP1 into the AP2 this coming year.

I had my fitting yesterday, and the answer for me is DEFINITELY AP1 (AGAIN)!!!

    I ordered the the 716 AP1s -- 5 iron through P wedge with KBS Tour 90 stiff shafts (102g), and Vokey SM5 wedges (48-08F, 54-10S, and 60-07M) with KBS Tour-V stiff shafts (110g).

During the fitting, I was hitting my 714 AP1 7 iron (Steel Fiber i95 R shaft) 156 yards (average).  I hit the 716 AP1 7 iron, with several different shafts, 160 to 175 yards.  I tried the following shafts:

    - TT Tour 90 S

    - Steel Fiber i95 S

    - KBS Tour 90 S

    - KBS Tour C-Taper Lite S

    - Recoil F4

    - Kuro Kage 65 TiNi S

My fitter (Larry Bleich at Westfields Fitting Studio) is awesome!  He had quite a few shaft options to try, but unfortunately did not have a Steel Fiber i95 R shaft, so we couldn't do a direct apples to apples comparison between my 714 Ap1 and the 716 AP1.  Although in the end, I am not concerned about this.  After the opening round with each of the above shafts, we narrowed it down to the Steel Fiber i95 S, KBS Tour 90 S, and Kuro Kage 65 S.  We then rotated through these three several times.  I was consistently hitting the KBS Tour 90 better (most 165 to 170, and a few up to 175, and with tighter dispersion) than the other two shafts.  This surprised me -- especially that I could not hit the much lighter Kuro Kage shaft as long as I could hit the KBS Tour 90.

I also hit the 716 AP2 7 iron with my three finalist shafts.  As I noted in my original post, I was thinking that I might be ready to shift to the AP2s this time, but after the fitting, I am certain this would not be the right move for me.  I hit may good shots with the AP2s, in the 150 - 160 range, but my off-center contact shots with the AP2 lost much more distance than they did with the AP1s.  I don't usually take much of a divot (often none at all), and the lower CG on the AP1s works really well for me.  So in the end, it was an easy choice for me to take advantage of the extra distance and forgiveness with the AP1s.

I adjusted my wedges as noted above, and am hoping this setup will work to create the right gaps at the bottom of my set. I went with the KBS Tour V S shafts in my wedges to get the extra weight (like I had previously).  Of course, I couldn't hit the wedges with those shafts in the fitting, so I am hoping this will work out for me.

Now I just can't wait to get these clubs!!!
