I recently switched irons from 712MB's to AP2's and always carried a 704 CB 2 Iron, I am wanting to update the 2 iron and am thinking of either a 712U or the TMB 2 iron. I have played around with hybrids and that is a no go, I also still have a 503H 19* driving iron which I like but it is a little out dated. Anyone got any suggestions on the difference between the 712U and the TMB? Just joined TT and love the community atmosphere. Thanks for any advice you may have!

    Sam,

Welcome to TT, the best Golf Community in the business.

I recently switched from the 712u 3i to the T-MB 3i, here's what I've found.  The 712u replaced my 910h 3 because I found it easier to hit off the tee and it filled the gap between my AP2 4i and my 2hybrid.  It had a nice, low launch that seemed to cut through the wind.  After about 5 shots with the T-MB I knew I had to change.   Better feel off the tee, much easier to hit off the turf, which was a challenge for me with the 712u.  The part that really sold me was two-fold.  The ball comes off the face like a rocket, so much hotter than my 712u, and the added distance.  I hit it side by side with my 2 hybrid and it was just as long with better ball flight.

Good luck on your decision and enjoy being part of the Team Titleist Family.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the response, your insight has helped a lot with my decision. I am hoping that we get a 2 iron here in Maui, Hawaii at the next Titleist demo day but I am not holding my breath. It is a shame the company didn't make an AP2 2 iron for retail but I realize not many people would buy one these days. I thought about bending an AP1 3 iron 4 degrees strong but this would mess up the performance of the club so the TMB seems to be the one for me. Thanks again!

I have never hit the 712U but i can agree that the ball absolutely flies off the face of the 716 TMB irons

I have heard negative reviews about the spin rate as well as the distance of the 712U in comparison to other Titleist long irons. I have hit the T-MB's and they feel much more forgiving and shape-able than the 712U. The only downside I had with the 712U is that they were not a lot of custom shafts available to plug into the head.

Thanks for the response, I am going to demo the 3 iron and order it in a 2 iron if the outcome warrants it. I need to compare my 3 iron to the TMB, if the TMB is longer then the 2 iron will be perfect for me. I am a firm believer in the benefits of a 2 iron, if you can hit your 3 iron well then it will only help. I am not a long hitter but with a 2 iron/driving iron it is a reliable option off the tee for the most part, that I am interested in.

    Hi Chris/Jason,

I am considering the T-MB for both a 2-iron and 3-iron. I do have hybrids as well, but am contemplating the T-MB as another alternative for tee-shots and for longer shots off the turf.

My question to both of you that have played with the T-MBs, is to ask what kind of swing speeds you generally have, are you using these for more windy conditions, etc.?

I gather that the T-MBs are easier to swing with a more "consistent" strike that gets the ball airborne with a good piercing ball flight. Obviously, my own swing mechanics/impact will largely dictate my ball flight/trajectory, but I am interested in getting your perspectives and experiences on the clubs.

    Thanks in advance! D.

I went a different route and just got a custom order 716 CB 2 iron..... stiff shaft KBS Tour c taper in std length and lie and diff grip

I find it better for my needs than the T-MB Irons and the 712U

For what it's worth, my numbers with the 712u and the T-MB were identical.

It might boil down to which head looks better to you, what the rest of your set makeup is, etc. rather than any difference in performance.

Thanks Wade, I guess I may end up having to settle with the TMB either way now as availability is difficult where I am. Thanks again though.

My numbers were identical also. I also found they felt/sounded the same. I have the 712U in 3 and 4 iron.

I know this post is old but I'm in a similar situation. 712u 2 iron or 716 t-mb? I'm lefty and it's easier to get the 716 new for me, but I have seen some of the 712u 2 irons out there.
