Had a really miserable season due to ongoing back issues that I can no longer produce the swing speed I feel I need to hit my 714 ap2 with stiff xp95 shafts. I just tried to cally 2016 apex model and was surprised how well I struck them but I'm really a Titleist man. I'm not keen on the latest ap1 but was wondering if a regular shaft in the new ap2 would work. Local range didn't have any to try.

    Stuart,

Hopefully your can find a certified Titleist fitter soon.  I would try the Aerotech I95 steel/graphite in AP2s.

That's my "dream clubs"  AP2s with Aerotechs..... one day........

When I tried it had a good kick and not that much vibration.  Just a thought.

    Good Luck.

Try any of these brand shaft AeroTech, KBS C-Taper Lite - But you have to test it with a reputable club fitter to get it dialed in.  Hope this helps.

Why not have different shafts in your 714's? Just a thought.

Those new AP1s might be worth looking into. From what I am hearing about them, the results a great. A Titleist fitter is the answer. A lighter more flexible shaft if the back is not repairable. A cheaper fix might be changing the shafts, as Dave N mentioned, being you really like the AP2s.

When my back gives me problems I have issues taking my stance, I believe the pain is just as great then if not more than when I swing. When this happens I usually take an extra 2 clubs and hit 3/4 punch shots to get me to the clubhouse. Not fully knowing your current situation, you may want to ask your club fitter for a demo with a lighter graphite shaft built to 1" over standard. This will help change your posture slightly upright and add a little speed back to you swing. I seen some decent 65g-85g iron shafts that may help with this build without making them too heavy to swing.

I had been having back problems. I am a walker and one day I decided to change to position on my Clicgear push cart. It is now in a more upright position and I am pushing it and walking behind it more upright and I do not have the pain I was experiencing while playing golf. Also, I notice that my back hurts more when I ride in a golf cart. I recognized the fact that I was walking in a bent over position while pushing my golf cart. Just food for thought.

I also have a bad back. Everyone has a different degree of damages... and everyone has different levels of pain in scale... and also a different level of pain tolerance for that matter, and with all of it combined within an individual, that makes everyone very different as to what they feel, able to do... or what they want to do. I just know that I have to be careful, and also not miss my exercises, as well as continue with the new swing I went with about 3-4 years ago....or I'll be in bed most the time instead of walking on fairways. Two years ago, my teach recommends me play either a regular or senior shafts. Today, I'm proud to own the new 716 CB with stiff shafts... and oh, those True Temper Dynamic Gold AMT shafts are heavier than my previous irons. The pain is still there and will probably always be. I'm just never stopping to find ways...or I could just be getting lucky. 'Love the 716 CB, btw. Good luck with the back...just don't let it get the best of you.

Especially since there are health issues, it will be worth it to find a good Titleist fitter. There is a treasure trove of options, including a re-shafting or new clubs. Just as important is if there is anything you can do to get your back in the best of shape. The only thing more important to me than playing golf at 85 is walking at 90, so I spend more time working on my body than hitting balls. Good luck

I would just swap the shafts. The look of the ap1 is just a little fatter and heavier that might bother you. It should be more cost effective.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I spent this afternoon at my nearest range/shop and just didn't see anything I liked as much as my 714s. Even the newer ap1 looked too chunky. Going to see if I can change the shafts out maybe for a reg option otherwise it's probably going to be another short season.

    Best regards to all

It sounds like you may be a candidate for the 716 T-MB irons. A local Titleist fitter may have demo set?

Unfortunately the local range aren't so helpful so I'm stuck at the moment. I played 7 or 8 holes last week and next day was bent at 60 degrees But did very much enjoy playing with the trial balls Titleist kindly sent( can someone please tell me what they are) and had some good results.

I have found a physio who does sport injury work so that's my next stop. I should add that I tried the ap2 716 reg at the range and loved them so if I can get a workout plan sorted then I am definately buying those irons.

Little update, finally got the back fixed, lost 16lbs(stronger core and upper body now) and decided to try again at the range. I now find the CB club in xp 90 stiff a absolute belter of a combo for me and will be having a full fit late next week.

I can't believe this, went to the range today to get fitted and they had a full Titleist fitting day........yesterday

Next one near me is not until June. Not sure my heart can wait that long(but I'm sure my wifes purse can!)

    Love is in the air..............

Just back from my fitting at American Golf Clydebank, many thanks to Callum for his expertise and patience!

Settled on CB716 6-pw in DG AMT s300 1/4 short and 1 deg flat tour velvet 360 grips. I also added 4 and 5 T-MB same spec and rounded off with a SM6 50 deg tour chrome wedge.

The Vokey has a different appearance to SM 5 to my eyes and if I love this new ones as much as my SM 5 (50, 54,58) then I will replace the other remaining 2.

Finally, I have my new irons, slight mistake by Titleist in that they sent the 3 T-MB rather than the 4 but I'm happy to keep it and can always get the 4 if needed.

First hit with new irons on course, the CB feel very soft but nice weight in the shaft combo. Struggled with the T-MB 3 iron blocking to the right which is a shot shape I never get, need to work a little on set up I think but sweet feel.
