I'm in the market for some new irons and I'm wondering which would be the better overall choice the ap2 or the t-mb? My handicap is around a 5 so I know that both choices will be sufficient. Does anyone have any recommendations about their preferences on either?

  2. Hi GHetrick. I also am around a 3-5 handicap so I would definitely say that either would be a good choice. I got a new set of 716 AP2 at the end of the season this year and love everything about them. You are able to work them both ways and just a great looking and feeling club. I haven't hit the T-MB clubs yet but just wanted to share my opinion on the AP2s.
  3. I am a Titleist Product Specialist (fitter) and agree for a low H/C, either iron set would be a good choice. I agree with Zach, the AP2's are a great iron for working the ball & still having forgiveness. I've fit players with AP2, 5 thru PW, then maybe a 3 & 4 iron in T-MB for distance. Final advice...check the Titleist.com website under CLUBS and find a Trial(demo) or free fitting in your area. Go out and hit both, get fitted, and you'll have a better feel which one is good for you.
  4. Hi, this may get long but please stay with me. I'm playing 714 AP2 PXI 6.0 (previously 712) and my bad shot is the miss left. I'm trying to reduce the left miss and thought a heavier shaft might help. I recently got fitted at a Titleist Thursday for 716 CB and T-MB 4/5i all with standard Project X 6.0. I wanted to try the LZ 6.0 but the fitter didn't have it so I tried it at a miz fitting (6 iron) along with standard PX 6.0, KBS C-Taper stiff and Modus 3 105x, outcome was the LZ was better. All within the same 900 Tour 6i (Titleist 7i) LZ 6.0 had 2mph more ball speed. I took photos of all the data and looked at it in detail and LZ had more carry, less roll, better spin, max height/decent 28/42 (stops quicker 180y) When comparing the data the PX 6.0 and KBS C-Taper numbers looked just about identical, same shaft. My question is from experience would you expect the same from a LZ 6.0 in a 716 CB all things being equal ? The 716 AP2 unfortunately didn't work for me, more Tungsten more left ? Have you seen this in fitting ?
Thanks in advance for any help or reply.

Hi Brian, I spoke to the UK and they indicated that all their fitting centres would have the LZ shaft. Here is a link to their UK centres: www.Titleist.co.uk.

I have hit both and have found that the AP2 irons were a club i could hit much more consistent and felt as well as sounded better. I would say that the T-MB are a much prettier club and fewer people have them on the course so there is a cool factor...but hands down i would go AP2

I tried both at my fitting!! Have got to admit, the T-MB's felt great for a cast iron and loved the look of them at address, but got better numbers with the AP2's!! A little lower launch and better spin numbers persuaded me and the AP2's also look good!!

I just ordered the AP2's with the Project X lz shaft, great shaft just like my Nippons 1150gh tour shafts!! Good luck!! Can't go wrong either way!!
  8. I agree with Zach. I also play to about a 4 and have the 716 ap2 with the project x lz 6.0 shafts. I love them. Tried the mb and cb but not the t-mb. I was close to going with the cb bc I got a few more yards out of them but like the tighter dispersion I got from the ap2 bc of the increased forgiveness. Don't think you'll be making a poor choice either way though!

GHetrick, I played the 714 AP2 for 2 years, then the 716 AP2s for a year. In October, I got fitted at TPI in Oceanside and went with the full line of T-MB's. I LOVE the T-MB's. More solid fit and feel. Better sight lines. Easier to clean and just, for me personally, an overall better choice. But hit them both. You can't go wrong with either one. It's a personal choice. Good luck and keep us posted!
  10. I have a set of 716 AP2s and absolutely love them. I love the forged soft feel. The clubs look great at address and have plenty of forgiveness. I can also work the trajectory of the ball and direction with ease. These have been my favorite irons throughout the years, I have gamed the 2008 AP2s, and the 712 APs and I have loved them all. I personally like the forged feel of the AP2s compared to the TMBs. Both irons would be great.
  11. I would advise going all AP2's except for long irons. I've played with the AP2 714's for three years and absolutely love them, however the longer irons are harder to hit because it is a player's iron. I found that the T-MB's have more distance and a better feel when hitting 5-3 irons.
