Graphite Irons For Senior?

    Being a bit 'long in the tooth' I think I need to change my steel shafted irons for Graphite. Has anybody got any useful tips please? Im an average golfer, mid 60's (age, not handicap!)

    Current handicap 17

    I swing around 80-90mph (I think) hit a 5 iron to 155m, short, around 5'6" in old money!!

    Dave. I too made the switch a couple of years ago. Only play steel in my Vokey wedges and Scotty putter. I get a little more speed but more importantly, the graphite seems to be easier on my joints as arthritis is becoming a bit of an issue (at age 59). My new 718 T-MB's have the Tensei Pro Red AMC graphite shafts and I love them. The black is less distracting than the old Kuro Kage shafts and they seem to be smaller diameter, more in line with traditional steel. Suggest you do a fitting so you can get a true comparison as there are some soft steel options that also work well with slower swing speeds. It will come down to the TrackMan stats and what feels best to you.

    You know, I am 71 and thought I needed to move to graphite shafts. I went to see my Titleist fitter, Bill F and he said no. He did a fitting and told me that there are enough lighter steel shafts they we, in my case, super seniors can still play with steel and get the distance we need. The key is going to a good fitter and getting the right set up. Still swinging stiff steel, XP105s and lovin' my 716AP1s.

    Chuck and Dale both make good points. You may need a change from the shaft you had at 50, but let the fitter help you find one for you. I just moved from 65 g graphite to the AMT-Red (about 97 g steel). The extra weight helped me smooth my tempo and I've added consistency and 10 yards with the AP3 over the 716 AP1 in graphite. This just shows there is no one answer to your question.. It's all personal.

    Dave, I have just been fitted with graphite AP3, awesome clubs. I have played three rounds and hit my handicap on all three, I’m 57 years young, handicap 20.4, hit the ball about the same distance as you.
    You will not be disappointed if you choose the right club, try the AP3’s

    I recommend going to a Titleist Thursday fitting in your area before you do anything.

    Try Titleist Thursdays, It's a fitting that's free. They should direct you to what you need.

    Small input. We're about the same age. I first was told you're getting older you need graphites (comment from golf retailer salesperson). I went and got fitted by certified Titleist fitter. I was shown multiple types of shafts, graphites, combos (Aerotechs), and steel.

    Results: Steel shafts, R flex. AMTs

    If you really think about it, is the salesperson at the retail store a certified Titleist fitter? Is he/she steering you to buy the competitor's new model. Is he/she really looking like a better golfer than you? Do you see them on the courses when you're playing?

    I don't think I'm buying any other brand that doesn't show consistency like Titleist. You might bomb 20 yards infront of me, but I got a ball and club that I trust on my next shot and not guess where it might end up. Find a Titleist fitter.

    Hi I am similiar age and handicap now playing Kuro Kage 65 graphite shafts in AP2 irons.
    Only mistake my club fitter made was to ask me my opinion on swing weight -since I was moving from png C9 swing weight in irons I thought one swing weight more i.e a Swing weight of D0 in AP2 would be Ok, but it turned out to be less as now I have to put lead tape on AP2 iron heads to improve the smash factor.
    So pay good attention to Smash factor in steel and graphite and see which feels better.
    I still dont know wath swing weight is optimum ....any advise from foroum members would greatly help, thanks Tony
