I pick up my new 710 AP2s with Project x 5.0 this afternoon, and anxious to start playing with them tomorrow.
Does anyone have any comments or experience with this combo?  Specifically to ball flight & distance.

    Thanks!

One of my most popular fits!  We typically order at 1 strong so let us know the scoop.

I have AP2's with X 6.0 shafts. Ball flight is lower and I'm 8-10 yards longer. I'm very happy with performance into greens with all of my irons.

I picked up a set custom fit a season and a half ago. Truly the best clubs I've hit to date. Easily a club longer with about the same trajectory I was hitting before which is mid-high flight. I love them.

Well, just returned from the range after practicing with the AP2s + Proj X 5.00...not totally pleased, but maybe just because the first session.  I've lost 15--20 yds with this combo, not sure if its the shaft or club.  I was playing TP R7 with DG S300, 8-iron easily could hit 150-160, 9-iron 130-145.  With the AP2s, I'm struggling to hit 8-iron 135-yd.  I hit my 52-deg gap wedge just as long as the 9-iron now!

My normal trajectory was high with distance, but it seems the Proj X flattened out the trajectory and put alot of spin on the ball because it just dies.  ANyone have any similar experience??

    Thanks-

The answer to the distance difference is that most TM clubs are made a club strong to make the amatuer think they are longer than they really are.  Your AP2 8 iron will be the same loft as your R7's 9 iron.  So your distance with the same loft club are the same.  And the AP2's are a vastly superior club.  I also have the Project X shaft in mine but they are 6.0.  Don't let the other manufacturers fool you with there manipulated lofts.  Hit the club that goes the distance you need and don't try to compare one 8 iron to the next because they are not the same.

If you look at the spec's for the Adam's CB2's I believe you will find that they are quite stronger than the AP2's.  I just ordered my AP2's with S300 shafts which is what I had in my previous 704.CB's.  I hope I'm not disappointed.

    Hi Doug-

I'm very sorry if I put any doubt into your mind on your acquisition of the AP2s with this string of posts.  Let me tell you that you will indeed love the irons.  I love the feel, and the looks, and the added confidence addressing the ball.  I'm just working thru a shaft issue and I know once I get properly fitted my AP2s will be the best irons I've played.

Dom:  we definitely need to check the lies and lofts and just compare apples to apples.  I believe most people are correct in the difference in lofts between brands.  I understand the concern and the frustration.  Let's turn it around and find an advanced fitter near you that can help.  All we may need to do is tweak lofts.

    Hi Ryan-

Thanks for your reply.  Would you have any recommended fitters in the Los Angeles area?  I was planning to drive down to Carlsbad Golf Center.
It has been frustrating but I know I'll work thru the issue.  I love these irons and intend to get fitted with the right shaft.

    Thanks-

I don't know anyone personally in LA, so I've asked Titleist to recommend one for you.  I'd love to send you to TPI if you are driving to Carlsbad!

Hi Dominic,  As always, our number one fitter in the LA/SD area would be our Tour facility at O'side.  We conduct our fittings outside on grass with a Trackman launch monitor.  You will be treated and experience the fitting as a Tour player.  The fitting for irons would take about 1 hour and the cost would be $150.00.  If you live in northern LA, there is an Advanced FittingWorks center in Goleta at Twin Lakes and the fitter there is Don Parsons.  Tustin Ranch/Erik Horve is in Tustin, CA and Carsbad Golf Center/Lee Sanudo in Carlsbad are also Advanced FittingWorks Centers.

    Hi Cathi!

Thanks for your reply.  I think I'll plan to visit the TPI to straighten this all out, perhaps this weekend!  I'm in Redonod Bch so it will be a pleasant drive down, plus I'm on the right side of Carmegeddon!!
Is there anyone in particular I should speak with when I call to set up a session?  While I'm there I'll probably make sure my 910 D3 with Kalai Blue 75 Stiff is the proper set-up.  Thanks agains.

    Regards-

When you are ready to come down, give us a call at Team Titleist and we can set that up for you.  Right now, we still have a couple of openings at the end of July.  Definitely bring your driver as they will want to take a baseline on it to see how well it is performing for you.

I switched from TM to AP2s with Project X 6.0's. I quickly found out, by comparing the lofts, that TM's clubs are a club strong because I was hitting the AP2s shorter also. The Frequency of Project X shafts is also measured at a 4 iron so by the time you get to a shorter iron the club is very very stiff. I ended up getting 5.5's instead of 6.0's. I know exactly what you are feeling, hope this helps.

I have AP2 710's with a Project X 5.5 shaft. I consider my self a beginner. I went to a golf store and they told me I would never improve using these irons. They suggested I use the TM RBZ irons with a regular flex steel shaft. Any opinions on this?

  17. First off from what u said about your previous set, you alluded to a 15 yard gap for a reference 8 iron 150 to 160 9 iron 130 to 145. From 130 to 160 should be covered by 3 clubs. I'm a plus 2 handicap and my average swing speed is between 115 and 118 according to track man. I hit the ap2 712s with Kbs tour x flex shafts. I carry my 8 iron on average 155 yards. I think maybe you just need more data to make a conclusion on your shots. Don't get so wrapped up in yardage differences between other sets bc lofts and shafts won't cost anyone 20 yards with an 8 iron unless the weight and shaft flex are dramatically different.  If you lost 20 yards your more than likely scooping your new irons.  Try making sure you are hitting those shots with forward shaft lean at impact and not just scoop chunking your new clubs. Then once you are hitting it solidly take your old irons and compare to new ones with identical swing. Distances shouldn't vary more than 5-7 yards depending on trajectory. Swing speed being the constant. And spin rate being lower should flatten the ball flight which is what your new project x shafts should do for u.

I've been playing this same combo for a little over a year now. Went from X-18 pro series to these. Much better feedback, and feel. The AP2s are awsome for hitting knockdowns,or making finesse shots. ball flight is a little higher 6 thru wedge. Distance is comperable for me for the most part. I do find that the PW and 9 will balloon and spin at times. But it depends on your swing. I don't know how well this combo would work for an aggressive steep swinger. Over all I have been really pleased with them. IMO the project X is better suited than DG for feel in this iron head.

I've had the same combo a little over a year now and I have to say these are the best irons I have ever had. Believe me when I say I've had plenty of sets of irons from Callaway's to Mizuno's. I am playing at about a 15 now but going lower each month. I have always hit a high ball and I get the same with these. i have not lost any distance, but like you when I first got them I did not hit them as far as my previous irons (X24s w/unifex). Then I started not trying to swing so had, my AP2s were lighter with the x 5.0s and I thought I need to swing harder. But then I started putting a smooth swing on the ball and man it was just great. My distance is the same or sometimes better, 8 iron 150 yards. I get kidded all the time about how often I would change irons sets, but that will not happen for some time not because I have found the right combo for me. I do have to say the new AP2s look awful sweet!

I have AP2's with Project X 6.0 and gained 10 - 15 yards in distance with 6 - P and about 10 yards with 3 - 5.  Hopefully, you went through a fitting for the shafts which is critical.  Getting the right shaft is mandatory.

You should have gotten the DG S300's. If not then you should have them bent a little strong. I think you are the first person who said their ball flight was lowered with the Project X shafts. ???

they have a great ball flight the start low and rise up quick and land soft like a butterfly with sore feet

First of all, I want to thank everyone for all your responses.  They have all been very helpful, thank you.

I spent 5-hrs at Trump National for another practice session with the AP2s last weekend.  And unfortunately, much the same response from the AP2s with the Proj X: lost yardage.  I really do think this can be attributed to the shaft.  I was hitting the 7I to a flag 152-yds out with a slight ocean breeze into me.  The trajectory was good and dead straight, I thought I was flying the flag and then the ball dropped 20-yds short!  Needless to say, this has been really frustrating, especially since I'm a solid 5.

While practicing I read Larry's response (thanks Larry!), and I tried adjusting swing, swing speed, etc.  A few shots I could muster flying the flag with 7I but mostly always fell quite short.
For kicks, I stopped at the local golf shop and picked up a demo club which had the KBS Tour 90S shaft.  This shaft with an Adams CB2 6I I was flying a 165-yd flag into a stiff ocean breeze. I couldn't hit the green with the AP2.  Definitely the shaft.

So I intend to revisit the fitting.  The golf shop who told me the Proj x 5.0 was perfect match for my swing was wrong!

    Thanks again to all.

Dominic C ... there is no way possible that a the Project X shaft is the reason you've lost distance.. the shafts are a favorite of mine i'd check the lofts of your irons or maybe see a pro for a lesson sometimes we try to hard to get distance .. relax let the club / shaft do the job they're suppose too...
