I currently hit a FT-9 tour and have the tendency to push shots I have the Mitsubishi Fubuki 63 stiff shaft the driver is a 10.5 draw inducing club. My questions are many I guess...First, I like the look of the d3 to my eye, the smaller profile is more appealing to me. That leads me to my next issue however, my swing speed is upper 80's low 90's so I'm torn between stiff and regular flex. I was leaning to the 'ilima 71 shaft thinking that it would help me get the ball up a little more since I'll have the smaller driver. Looking for any advice, thanks.
Hi. I have a D2 with an Ahina stiff with a swing speed of 98 and it works well for me. First, I think the D3 will tend to give you a lower flight and spin versus the D2. Get on a launch monitor and try D2 v D3 with reg and stiff shafts to make a side by side comparison. Getting fit for my driver I did not like the 'illma because i felt the ball flight was too high but that's a person choice. I went for the 'Ahina in my driver and the 'Kali in my 3W and hybrids.
Hope this helps.
The D3 will require a more consistent swing, as it has a slightly smaller sweet spot. However, if you have a good swing, and like the look of the smaller head, I say go for it. The way a club fits your eye is very much a part of how well you hit it. As far as REG vs STIFF, all shaft manufactures rate shaft stiffness differently, but virtually all would suggest a REG with your swing speed. (Mine is 94 mph. I play REG.) The shafts that Titleist offers with no upcharge are a bit limited in my opinion. The Ilima will help you get the ball up in the air, but there are many other shafts out there that might do the same and offer you more benefit. I recently upgraded my D2 with a UST Mamiya ProForce VTS 65 Silver. I was originally fitted by Golf Galaxy for the Ahina 72 STIFF. I wasn't convinced, since the only choices they offered me was the Titleist stock shafts. I knew there was a better shaft, and I eventually found it. Good luck.
D3 and definitely get a regular flex shaft.
I don't understand how anyone can give you advice on getting a d3 versus a d2 based on a few sentences you wrote. Try them both out at the range if possible to see which one works best for you, or in the store if your local range doesn't allow you to try out clubs. I would not be so quick to discount the D2, afterall I do believe Bill Haas won the Northern Trust Open a few weeks back with the D2 in his bag and even more recently Rory won the Honda Classic this past weekend with a D2 in the bag. So definitely do not get sucked into believing that the D2 is somehow a lesser player's driver. It ultimately comes down to you and your swing.
I agree with trying the D2 and The D3. I would try to stay with a regular flex shaft though.
Thanks for al your suggestions. I've made some swing changes over the last couple days and really developed a most relaxed and powerful swing. I don't have access to measure my swing speed but I carry my 7 iron about 160 full swing and my driver distance is around 290. Planning on testing the d3 with the kaili and rip 60 shafts in the next couple days.
