913D Launch Angle & Spin Rates

Hi TT,

Does anyone have any numbers for the optimal launch angle and spin rates for the 913D2 and D3 please?  I'm hearing the the new TM R1 is throwing out 17 degrees and 1700 RPM as their optimal.  Just wanted to see how this compares with the 913's

Thanks

That's just an optimal number for the physics of the ball flight, not necessarily for any one driver.  Between shaft options and adjustable heads for loft and lie, it is easier to get to that target than just pulling a regular or stiff or 9.5 or 10.5 driver off the rack.

Some slower swing speeds may need a higher spin and/or launch angle to maximize their distance.  Based on the ads, even OEMs with large rack displays are agreeing that only 20% of golfers will get the most benefit off the rack.

Ian,
launch angles and spin rates are dependent on the player AND  the club.  It really cannot be said that a club / driver has a spin and launch.  I cannot even give you an average for a club.  If you would find a good Titleist fitter in your area have them show you the Titleist fitting manual.  Look under the driver resources tab and you will see pages with graphs based on ball speed.  You will see the distances based on launch and spin for every ball speed ranging from 120 MPH to 185 MPH.
When we fit a player we use the ball speed charts to help us optimize a players launch conditions based on their speed. If you'll notice on the charts the more your shot moves up to the upper left hand corner toward the white area the launch gets higher and the spin gets lower.
A good fitter will gather your launch numbers from the monitor and then make decisions with regards to the head, shaft, setting .... to get you your best numbers. But those numbers will be based on the type of swing you make ALONG  with the club specs.

Ian,

Launch monitors will show large carry distances when you have a very high launch and low spin, depending upon your ball speed.  When fitting, we are realistically looking for 13-15* launch and around 2000-2500 RPM spin, again, depending upon your ball speed.

I found this article that helps us novices understand club head speed - launch angle - ball spin.  Dynamic loft and the effect of shaft flex/torque convinced me I need to rely on an expert, but optimal launch and spin is primarily a function of club head speed.  12 to 17 are optimal, depending on a club head speed from 75 to 115.  Comparing the table for optimal carry versus optimal travel explains some why some may consider 17 to be optimal and Cameron's 13-15 degrees.

Did TM happen to mention at what swing speed, ball speed, and angle of approach?
