Should I doubt my Titleist CB Club fitting?

  1. Hi  Team,

I was fitted today for new irons. Historically, I have played TM and actually went to the pro shop in search of probably being fitted to the miz JPX 825 Pros or the RBZ Tour. I am a 15 handicap, and prefer an iron with a thin top line. While I liked the feel of the miz iron, I decided to try the Titleist AP2 (AP1 does not come in graphite shaft?). I hit that iron probably as well as the JPX825 Pro but wanted to see if I could hit the Titleist 712 CB Forged as I really liked the look. I hit about 9 shots with it and it felt really good. The Pro said that it looked like I got a higher launch with the CB. I voiced my concern about my 15 handicap playing an iron that is more typical of a lower handicap player. He said after watching me swing for the last hour, he felt confident that I was consistent enough to hit the CB.  Even though I only hit off the mat in the shop and never hit any from the driving range, I went ahead and custom ordered the 5-PW, SR Flex Graphite, Womens length, 1 degree flat. I feel really good about the fitting but am wondering if i may have compromised on forgiveness.

Should I doubt the fitting and the Pros recommendation when only hitting the 6 iron approximately a dozen times? I loved how this iron looks, really hope I can hit them as well on the course.

I'm not a fitter by any means, but I think that hitting a 6 iron a dozen times off the mat would not be a good indicator, especially since you are going basically to a blade type club. Plus, I don't mind hitting off the mat, but I tend to hit almost perfect shots all of the time when I hit off the mat. When you hit off grass, you tend to hit shots that will vary (club digging, etc.) then if you hit them off the mat.

    Just my 10 cents worth!

Let us know how the new irons work for you.  Since your pro was there and fit you, it would be hard to second guess his reasoning.

There is a huge difference between hitting from mats and real grass. I would assume the pro got good results on length and lie tests and shaft flex. However how the ball launches in terms of trajectory is drastically different.  I would suggest going back as soon as you can ( since Titleist is very fast at getting clubs shipped out) and hit the club from the turf. Be sure to check the launch angles with those in the Titleist fitting manual.  If they are not what they should be then you can have the lofts changed or maybe changing the shaft in order to get the the desired launch angles.

    Elaine,

I under stand completely what you are saying, i am a 10 right now and holding flat.  I just got fit by the Regional Titleist Fitter due to my extreme club head speed, and distance that i hit my clubs ( 6 iron 225).  I have played several rounds with my custom 712 CB's.  i have noticed that if i go at it hard by ball goes everywhere, but if i focus on face path than the feeling is amazing.  You have to remember that the CB's are ball strikers club meant for controlling flight and direction.  Trust the fitting and stay positive.

  6. Hi Elaine,

I would ask the question, why are you a 15 handicap? I too have a high handicap but my problem is accuracy off the tee with driver & 3W and often have to hit recovery shots before I can go for the green. I hit my irons just fine having replaced my 3 & 4 irons with a 4 hybrid. This year I too have begun looking at irons including some I previously had never considered like Titleist 712 CB, cleve 588 CB, swoosh pro combos (along with new driver & 3W!).

If you like the look of the club, they way it feels in your hands when you give it a waggle and the feedback you get when you hit a shot then you're going to hit them fine on the course. All of that leads to confidence and you play your best  when you're confident.

    Enjoy your new sticks!

it's hard to doubt the pro.  but i have to admit, i would be very hesitant putting out that kind of money after only hitting a 6 iron a dozen times.  if you were picking them up on some open box sale, that would be different.  but if you're going to all the trouble of ordering and having them fitted to you, i would want a little more.

Nothing wrong with buying based on how it looks and feels.  I will play Devils advocate though.  I think it says a lot when a tour player switches from musclebacks to a  "players" cavity back.  Webb Simpson comes to mind.  He switched from an older style balde to the AP2's.  All that matters is that you like what you bought.  Sounds like you have a little bit of buyers remorse.  As a 15 handicap can you handle the CB's?  Sure.  Are there more forgiving models out there - absolutely.  But as you stated - you like a thin topline, so you are limiting your options.

  9. I would like thank everyone who provided feedback on my discussion reference questioning my iron fitting...I haven't received them yet, but am very excited about getting on the course with them. I took the advice of hitting the same setup again ...only in the store again, and am more confident than ever that I made the right purchase. I will keep the team informed on how my game improves.

Thanks again to everyone for the advice and feedback.

    Elaine
