I notice that many of the very young (ie 8-9 yrs old) advanced juniors are using Scotty Cameron putters in the tournaments that my daughter is playing.  The shortest shaft I see available is 33" which would still be to be far to long for my daughter.  Are these others just cutting down a standard putter or are there junior options that can be customized to keep the weight/balance in check?

I was planning to cut down some putters for my kids and nephew.  With a putter, you don't have to worry about the flex.  But the weight could be an issue.  I'm not exactly sure how cutting it down will affect the "feel" but I plan to check that and modify if needed.  I'm no expert, this is just my thinking and my plans, however, I'd love to hear what an expert has to say about it.

    Robert,

33" is the shortest stock option. I believe you can customize the shaft and order is up to 2" short. Cutting a putter down affects the balance and weighting and I don't recommend doing this.

If I were her coach I would suggest a more appropriate length and weighted putter and when she gets tall enough revisit the Cameron putters.

We will build to 32.5" as the shortest custom option.  Here are a couple of things to note.  Scotty Cameron putters have gotten heavier by about 10 grams over earlier Scottys.  You can use the 20 gram weights in a 33" and have it cut down to 32" or even 31.5" and have a similarly weighted putter to the older Scottys.  The custom shop does have heavier weights and can cut the putter even shorter, but, a junior (especially a young junior), may prefer a lighter putter.  We would recommend talking to her swing coach and fitter to see what might work best for her.
  5. Good question, for my son that is in fifth grade and shorter I had the SC Custom shop send me heavier weights plus we shortened the length of the club to 31" while adding a fun headcover...just a thought...obviously get your junior fit to determine what length is needed but shortening a putter is simple, as long as you add heavier weights and you can even add a lighter grip to get the swing weight back to normal.

    IMHO, Chris

  6. I know this is an old thread, but didn't want to start a new one:

Question for hopefully a Titleist rep. My 7yr old son wants a Scotty Putter. My boy is a very good golfer and of course we want to encourage his passion for golf. For his 8th birthday, my wife and I would like to get him a scotty ! If at all possible, I'd love to have him go through a Scotty Cameron putter fitting! I know it's expensive, but no more expensive than birthday parties these days.

Question is... When they are so short (my son is a shorty), how is it possible to do a fitting? Is it possible to do a fitting with a junior?

I would like to see what a rep would have to say about this as well.

I'm in the same boat, and have had many Master Fitters mention the same thing; adult putters that are cut down for juniors (-31") throws off the engineering that was designed for that putter (i.e., length/weight).

We are making an appointment with an Edel Certified Fitter (Mike Dickson from Congressional Country Club) to have my 9 year old custom fitted for a Putter. He's 53" inches tall with a 25" wrist to floor height.

Hopefully there's some industry professionals that can provide some of their insight on Junior Clubs and fitting.

    Thanks!
