I'm currently in the process of switching from std length S300's to 1/2" over X100's in my 710 ap2's. After doing the first club, my club builder said the swingweight was around D7 because of the extra length (sounds a bit high since 1/2" theoretically adds 3 points to the standard D2 of the ap2's). He only did the 1 club and is waiting for me to go hit it before he does the rest of them.

I'm pretty concerned about that swingweight. Is D7 ridiculously high? I'm by no means a good enough player (10 hcp) to notice or be bothered by a difference of a few SW points, but the builder also seemed a little concerned it was that high. Does a swingweight only affect the feel for the the player or does it change the performance also (lauch, spin, swing)?

Next, if wanted to lower the swingweight, is it a bad idea to add weight to the butt end of the shaft? If i add 10 grams, it should go down to D5-ish, if I'm not mistaken. Then my whole club is heavier and I don't know if that's better. I know you guys at Titleist actually drill material out of the head (i think?) in this situation, which is ideal, but my buddy doesn't wan't to go down that route!

I'll obviously have a better idea when I hit the club tomorrow, but I still wanted your thoughts and opinions on the matter!

Thanks,

Simon

[/quote]

The swingweight should jump only 3 points with 1/2" extra length. Probably has a lighter grip (like Winn Excel RF @ 43g and that adds 2 swingweight points). Going from a standard grip to a mid grip will decrease the swing weight 2 points (assuming a Lamkin Crossline standard is 52g and a midsize is 63g).

Re: Iron swingweight concern.

I agree with Ryan about the DGSL shaft for the longer
club. I had a few players needed longer length irons with DG and the DGSL
shafts were one of the best option. By the way, according to players playing
DGSL shaft, the tip section feel stiffer than DG but numbers(from TrackMan)
were very closed in two shafts.

I don’t think the swingweight jump up to D7 unless
install a light weight grip. If your AP2s’ were installed with brass tip weight,
your club builder will have more option to control the swingweight without
adding weight butt-end or switching to DGSL.

Good luck!

D7 is a little high and swingweight does affect performance by changing your perception. If the club feels too heavy, you will not necessarily be inspired to swing well. You'd be fighting the feel.

Can I ask why you are changing in the first place? Going from S3 to X1 long is quite significant.

One option found primarily on tour is going to X100 DG Super Light (DGSL) when adding shaft length. You can get very similar performance at much lighter weight.
