Bassara W 50 stiff or Regular

  1. My driver swing speed is between 90-96 mph. Right now I have a Superfast 2.0 in Stiff flex (45gram wgt.) cut from 46.5" to 45". This seems to have helped a lot since I'm now hitting the sweet spot more often with tighter dispersion. However, taking off 11/2 inches has caused it to be even lighter and more whippy (if that makes sense). Which I don't like at all. I recently tried out the 910 d2 10.5 with the bassara w 50 in regular (50grams) and liked it, but I'm wondering if I would be better off in a stiff flex with the same shaft. Can you help me with this?

I have the same swingspeed and play the stiff in this shaft.  It's the best performing shaft I have ever used in this club.  The regular just feels to soft to me becuase of the lighter weight.

  3. Thanks John, I was definitely leaning towards the stiff especially since my burner is a stiff and afterI shortened its even more.

    Hey George,

Based on your clubhead speed you should be in a stiff flex. But cutting your Superfast shaft shouldnt have made it (much) lighter, nor should it have made the club seem more whippy. If anything it should have made the shaft more stout.  As for your question about going stiff or regular, you should definitely be in a stiff if your club  head speed is consistently above 90mph

I have a swing speed of 82MPH with woods.  Slightly faster with the hybrids and irons.

I agree with Ryan - cutting the shaft 1.5" should stiffen it up.   I have a Burner HT Draw driver with M flex shaft (set at 44.5") and it feels like hitting regular.  I also had to cut a Superfast 5-18 FW and 4-21H by 1" get them to hit properly.   To compensate for the 6 point swingweight loss, I replaced the grips with Winn Lite Dri-Tac oversize.

I traded the Superfast 5W and 4H for a 910F 19* with Bassara A flex.   I also acquired 910H 24* and 27* Bassara regular flex (I also sold my Superfast 2.0 6H to one of my friends).  All of these are 1/2" shorter than standard and with Excel RF midsize grips and set at B3 for best performance.  I get a nice gradual ball flight with the Titleists.

  6. Hey Ryan, your right about it being more stout or stiff. Whippy is probably not the right explanation for what I'm feeling. The club just feels lighter to me. The 910 d2 j9.5 head  with the lighter shaft felt like I was just absolutely mashing the ball , not to mention the more muted sound of the face vs the burner superfast. which sounds (cheap).  Thanks for the help

Try putting the Winn Lite Dri Tac grip on your driver.  Works like a charm.

  8. I have a question aout shaft options.  My wife purchased a new Titleist 913 D2 driver for me for Christmas - bless her!  I took it into the golf shop and they had me hit some shots using their launch monitor machine.  The guy recommended the Aldila RIP Phenom 70 shaft for me. Looking at the Titleist website I see the specs on the  Aldila RIP Phenom 70 only comes in a stiff flex.

I'm a pretty small guy, 5' 8'', 160 pounds, and I'm old, 58, with pretty limited flexibility so my backswing is short.  I generate about 87-88 mph swingspeed.  I have never used a stiff flex shaft, because of my limited swingspeed.

I'm a decent player, currently 5.3 index, but not a long hitter.

I should not be in a stiff flex shaft should I??  I hate to spend $400 and get fitted with the wrong club set-up for me.

My current driver is a cleve Launcher Ultralite 270.  I like it, and think it's light weight probably helps me given my slower swing speed.  The shaft on the cleve 270 is a Miyazaki regular flex, with a weight of just 45 grams.  The recommended Aldilla Phenom shaft has a weight of 74 grams according to theTitlist website.  I see there are other stock shaft options though including a Bassara W 50 shaft.  It has a weight of 48-51grams accordoing to the website.  I assume "W" is to denote this is a women's shaft.  Who cares, I don't think I do if it was better suited to my swing.

Appreciate any advice regarding shaft options.

Curious if the fitter was the actual Titleist fitter at a big box or the fitter/pro at a golf shop?  Did they actually try several shafts and lofts with you?  The Bassara 50 comes in multiple levels of stiffness, at least for a woman, senior, and regular, if not Stiff as well.  The Diamana Blue 62 g comes in regular and stiff at least.  So unless you were hitting balls way to high with one of these shafts, I'd be surprized you'd be fitted with the Alda Rip 70.  Especially with a preference for the 270 cleve.  If you look at the chart for the Rip shaft, it does control launch and spin effectively.

Every swing is different, but I'm in the same general age/speed range, and both the Bassara and Blue regular were in the same launch angle, but the 50 didn't increase my swing speed (I am so terminal ...velocity...) and I liked the feel of the 62 over the 50.  I had less success with the Diamana White in stiff.  A decent fitter would start with your current driver and work through several shafts as well as head lofts and then explain why that combination is the best choice for you.  If you didn't get that, ask for the certified fitter or try somewhere else.  I know at my local big box, the only one with the Titleist certificate is the PGA there, and I have to ask for that person.  Anyone will try to fit me.

Looking back at the first post...... 46.5" is a horribly long driver even for someone who is 6'5".  Most pros use 44.5" .

Like I mentioned. I have a TM Burner 2007 HT Draw M flex (senior) and the shorter shaft length makes it feel like regular.  I have a Winn Lite Dri Tac grip.  The feel is fantastic and I put the ball down the middle pretty consistent.  I've hit this so-called "old geezer" driver 270 yard and have hit a few beyond 250 (normal driving distance is about 220-230).

I was actually thinking in the distant future of getting a 910D2 with Bassara W 50 a flex and shortening it to 44".  Dri Tac grip would be the choice and would probably use at least the A3 or B3 setting.   I had a G2 driver with a 44" shaft - could swing away but hit more of a power fade because of the flat lie angle.

My 19F and 21H are both a flex and the shortening by an inch stiffens them a little.

I'm 55 and I would consider myself "average" with a distance of 140-145 on my 34H and 130 on my 8 iron.  I would say my average driver swing speed is between 82-85 mph and I peak around 90. I've always played my woods a step more flexible than my irons (used to play regular woods and stiff irons; now I play a flex on woods and regular on hybrids and irons).

I have a TM Burner HT draw driver M flex (a) but shortened to 44.5"   I also have 910F 19* with Bassara A flex (shortened to 41").   The TM shaft is 50g and the Bassara fww shaft is 55.   I hit my driver somewhere around 220-240 yards and the fairway about 190 (200 if I get on it a bit).   My 910H 27* has a Bassara 60 regular shaft and that hits perfect (I get about 155-160).

  12. Thanks for the comments.  I'll review with the fitter at the golf shop, and look into anoother option with the Bassara W50 shaft.
