  1. I am thinking about getting fit at the PGA superstore in NJ. HAs anyone been fit at a PGA store? how does it compare to the other levels of fitting? I know it is free at the store and that concerns me for some reason. Any  thoughts?

    Hey Tim,

I am also in NJ and have been fitted at Titleist, Oceanside, Ca. I have seen and attended Titleist fitting days at the PGA Superstore and would strongly suggest (at the very least) you attend a demo day at any one of the Driving Ranges or courses on offer so you can see your ball flight. After a calm, relaxed driving session you should be able to bring some knowledge of the flight results to a fitting at an indoor facility like the PGA Superstore for a more educated comparison and to help assist in dialing in the shaft, lie, loft and head specs.

Also, you could supplement this by going to an outdoor range, like Novogolf at Tappan, demo their Titleist drivers by using their Trackman monitor on the outdoor range so you can check both your numbers and flight.

    Fitting Days:

    Hope this helps,

I kind of have the same thoughts. I was fit for my driver at Sleepy Hollow and they fit me for an hour without charging me too much. I want to get fit for some irons and I also feel the guys at the PGA superstore are just guys who need a job ilike anyone else, not a specialist or a guy who really knows about club fitting.

    I guess I just needed confirmation...thanks bro

    Joseph,

Steve ball here, got your note, for some reason my TT login is acting up at the moment when i tried to reply.  Feel free to contact me on my email about your clubs -- ballgolf@mac.com. you might include your phone number and I will call you if need be.  I can get clubs shipped out in one day usually.

Thanks so much for your note and desire to have me help you out -- it is greatly appreciated.

Big box stores fit the needs of a lot of people.  The shortcoming is do they fit on an outdoor driving range, is the fitter also a capable instructor that can suggest quick changes to improve your swing if needed, do they have a wide selection of shafts or the basic minimum of stock shafts, and are they willing to take more than 15 minutes for a driver to make sure you have the right head and shaft for your swing?

Spending $400 for a driver, I'd like to go to at least an advanced fitting center outdoors.  Most will discount/delete the fitting charge for a purchase.  You can't tell in a 15 foot bay what the shot shape will be at the end, down range.

That's my neutral position.  I'm left-handed and the boxes with a bag only have one LH head for each club. I have no choice unless the 9.5, 15, 21, and 6I heads are exactly what I need.  And 52, 56, and maybe 60 degree wedges in wedge steel off the rack are perfect.

  6. thanks Dan.....great points

the only place a legitimate fitting is possible is outdoors, using a launch monitor, see ball flight, using a real golf course ball ( Pro V not range balls) and being fitting by a very knowledgeable fitter. Also, this fitter should know about different brands and their features and benefits. AND, the fitter should be a good instructor that knows when to change a swing and when to change the club specs.

Sooooo, that precludes a concrete store, hitting into a simulator, being fitted by a clerk that is being compensated by a club manufacturer.  If you guys read on the TT site you will see more and more comments from amateurs that have experienced both sides of this equation.
Think about it - you play golf outdoors, not into a "simulator"  Why do you think they call them simulators, bc they are not the real deal.  I would also suggest asking any of your friends if they have ever hit balls into a simulator using one of the stores launch monitors. Ask them how far the clerk said the ball was going.  They are usually EXTREMELY  inflated numbers --- like 20-40 yards longer with a 6 iron that what the player normally hits it....

You will also see on the TT site that most good fitters do not charge for a fitting if you buy clubs from them AND custom clubs usually do not cost any more than standard, off-the-rack clubs.

You have probably seen the latest listing of Top 100 club fitters in Golf Digest .Don't be fooled by some of those places listed that are indoors.  The same rules apply from above. Always will be the case.

The Superstore isn't bad, but like AJAR mentioned, demo days, Regional/Advanced centers, will usually have more options and do their fittings outdoors. If the only thing close to you is the Superstore, then go ahead and go in, get fit and if you have any doubts, ask them tons on questions. The "numbers" will vary a little bit from hitting off of a mat and actually hitting off real turf. If you go to the Superstore, ask for all of your numbers (launch angle, ball speed, spin, AOD, deviation, attack angle, club head speed...whether or not you need your clubs a little flat or upright, short or lengthened...and so on...), then, post that info on here, and we can see how they have you set up.

If you need any more help/input, feel free to ask. That's what we're here for.

We would recommend getting fit so you can see ball flight. Some machines, such as the Trackman are very good at extrapolating numbers, and if you are in the middle of winter at an inside facility,  it will certainly give you good comparison numbers on different shafts and heads.  If you are in New Jersey, you are not too far from several Advanced Fitters as well as Kevin Sprecher, one of our fitters at our Regional fitting center at Sleepy Hollow CC.  Mike Strlekar is the Director of Golf at Montclair GC and one of our Advanced Fitters.  We would recommend calling them to get procedure as well as scheduling and pricing.

  11. Thanks Cathi. I am an hour from Sleepy Hollow and in the process of making an appointment

so did I/ Mine in on May 11th.

  15. Hi Cathi

Well, my fitting was today and while Kevin was a pure professional, my performance was lacking :)  While admittedly the 6 iron is the worst club in my bag, I typically do not hit it as bad as I did today. I made his job very difficult today. we hit off some mats an dthen went to the range and hit off wet grass. I hit some chunky and then a bit thin.....wasn't my best day of swinging and ball striking.

My question is this, The AP2 was the best set up with the trackman numbers but I loved the feel of the MB's. The difference was in the spin rate. Kevin said the MB spin was a little over 6000rpms while the AP2 was under 6000 resulting in a shorter distance with the MB.....I feel like the MB felt twice as nice and I love the look much better than the AP2......will the spin rate effect my game in a negative fashion where I will not score as well as I could have with the AP2's?

I wish I could go back on a dry day (Lost of wetness today in the northeast) and perform a bit better, but it is what it is....what are your thoughts on buying the MB's vs the Ap2's?

Hi Tim,  Give Kevin a call and discuss your concerns.  It depends on your ball speed and launch angle.  You can launch it a little lower and have higher spin or launch it higher with a little lower spin and achieve the same distance.  Higher spin means that it will stop quicker and may spin back.  If you have plenty of speed, that may work fine for you.  Since, the MB's have caught your eye, let Kevin know and discuss the pros and cons before you place an order.

  17. I ended up with the MB's because I am committed to playing and am taking a few extra lessons. I am very happy with the MB's, especially around the greens. While I know I need to keep working, my stroke is more consistent than it has been in the last few years. Sure I mishit some shots, but my average score has dropped 3 strokes since making the switch and the feel is 2nd to none

Sleepy hollow is awesome....very good customer service
