  1. Hello Titleist

I just completed a club fitting session at a regional fitter. Here is the Northeast, it is very rainy. We started off warming up on the mat and I was not striking the ball well. I actually hit a few very thin. We moved outside on the grass and after warming up a bit, I started hitting the ball better. I currently play png Anser but am moving to Titleist and was hoping to be fitted for the MB's. During the session, I started hitting the CB's because the fitter felt the MB's were way above my skill level and the club would not perform for me. I was in agreement due to the thin shots I had been hitting. Anyway, we went through the AP1, to the CB and then the AP2. The AP2 set up with project x 5.5 set up had the lowest spin rate and had the best distance.

The CB's didn't work out so well for me, but before I left I asked to hit the MB's with the same set up of the Ap2's.....the MB felt better, nice and solid and I hit it well, but the trackman numbers suggested the spin rate was more than the fitter wanted to see.....my question is, between the Ap2's and the MB's, is the spin rate that much different? should I not even consider the MB's?? from a feel perspective, they felt the nicest.  I walked away without placing an order. The fitter did mot feel comfortable selling me the MB's and I am not in love with the AP2's.....I really appreciate the honesty of the fitter and know he was doing his job and representing Titleist in the best way possible....is the spin rate that much different in the MB's that I shouldn't even consider them? Please help!!!!!

    Tim,

The increase spin could have been from some shots slightly off center.  We generally see similar launch and spin with both irons, and at times more spin (and higher launch) with the AP2.  I would take the Fitter's recommendation, since he was able to analyze your ball flight and consistency.  It sounds like you are going to benefit much more from the AP2s, since the more forgiveness will give you better distance control on miss-hits.  Know that the 712 AP2 are still a very workable iron, similar to the benefit of the 712 MB.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Thank you

I hear you but the only issue for me is the looks of the AP2.....I do not like the chrome or the look of the cavity. I know its about performance and scoring better, which is why I am torn. I almost want to go back and hit them again because I feel the super soft wet ground may have skewed the numbers......maybe not....maybe im just looking to get into the MB's because I like the feel and look so much......I just don't want to spend a lot of money on something I know I do not love.

if the performance is close, I was hoping I could manage better swings and have the MB's perform the way they should with me hitting them.

I just switched from png i15's to the AP2 2 degrees strong with steelfiber i95 r shafts and hit a homerun. I have lowered my ball flight and spin rate and picked up 10 yards on each club. I believe the lofts on the mbs and cbs are standard blade lofts which are weaker than the AP2s and spin more.

  5. The MBS actually spin less and are the same loft as the Ap2's.....the png i15 actually has a lower loft by 1 degree but is 1/4" shorter in length

    Dan L,

The lofts for the CB and MB are the same as the AP2 irons.

As for the question at hand:

I agree that the spin difference could be coming from an off-center hit.  If you are dead set on playing the MB irons, but want to have the spin reduced, you could strengthen the lofts of the MB's.  This does not make them more forgiving at all, and I would never recommend playing a club that does not benefit your game.  My suggestion would be to play the AP2 irons, your eye will adjust to the finish and cavity look.

  7. thanks Kyle.....much appreciated

  8. Hello Tim,

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on something you don't love then for heaven's sake don't buy them! On the other hand, don't spend a lot of money on something you can't yet hit consistently. At a demo day this past weekend, I tried the AP1s and hit them fine but the ball flight was too high for my tastes. I couldn't hit the AP2's worth a sack of beans. Oddly, I hit the CB's very well and they're on my short list. Out of curiousity, I tried the MB's (6 iron). I hit the first one perfectly, fell head over heels in love and knew instantly why pro's play blades. The next four shots reality set in. I am not ready for MB's.

As much as I respect Titleist (we all do of course), have you looked at other manufacturers? Perhaps one of them has an iron that's a better fit for your game as your game happens to stand right now. If you don't like what you see when you look at the AP2's, you never will learn to.

    Good luck,

    Dan

    Hi Dan

I currently play png Anser and they are an amazing iron but could be better from a feel perspective. To me, they are a bit harsh for a forged cavity back.  When I went for my fitting, it was a horrible day where rain had been faslling for days. The fitting was set up inside on a mat, but I was told you should never be fit by hitting off a mat. You should always be fit in real life conditions, outside in the elements.  Well, i suggested we move outside and the ground was drenched. I had a rough time and the fitter suggested I go for the Ap1's, which I do not like at all. We tried the CB's and I hit them better but went for the Ap2's as a set up. The fitter said they would probably be the best for me. The Ap2, gave the best numbers off the trackman and as I continued to hit, my swing got better and started hitting it more consistent off the wet turf. The fitter told me to stay away from the MB"s but I bugged him to hit them anyway and the feel was amazing. The trackman numbers were close to the Ap2's, so thats the way we went.

My only regret is not hitting the miz MP64's.

I am not a fan of chrome clubs, but they seemed nice when I saw them in person. I may go hit them at the PGA superstore near me, just to see how they feel.

    thanks for the replies

  10. I just received my mbs with px 5.5's and hit them today and while they are an amazing iron and perform well, I am convinced the PX shafts are what makes any club feel harsh.  During my fitting session, I do not know if I hit the s300, but I did try a heavier shaft which felt softer and brought the ball flight down......

I absolutely love the MB's but may already be contemplating a shaft switch......any thoughts?

  11. I would recommend the MBs if they fit your eye better.  I play to a 14 and was told to play the AP2 irons but I did not like the look and preferred the MBs.  I was fitted for the MBs in March 2012 and couldn't be happier.  My game has improved with the blades and they are a great looking iron!
