Currently I play with Pings. 2 degrees flat.

I went to a demo day and got fitted for AP1. I was told that I needed 2 degrees up right. That's four degrees different. Because I want to buy new irons I hit the AP1 off the lie board. Both times it was 2 degree flat.

i want to order the clubs but I am so confuse. What should I do?

    Hi Walter,

    Thank you for the post.

When it comes to fitting for lie angles, lie boards should simply be used as a reference. As a fitter, I would primarily look at ball flight. If a person has a tendency to miss it right, I would go more upright and vice versa. From there I would take into account hand position at impact and finally, I would give a quick look at the divot.

How did you hit the upright irons? I would try both 2 flat and 2 up side-by-side and see which one creates more solid contact and produces a better flight.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Walter,  I spoke with your fitter at the fitting day and although you use clubs that are 2 flat, your shot pattern was not as consistent as both you and your fitter thought they could be and they were falling off to the right.  When you worked with standard lie clubs, it was better, but still falling off to the right.  When you went to 2° upright, the shots became more consistent.  Your fitter was concerned about where you were at impact as well as getting a more consistent ball flight.  He has invited you to go to the Navy Marine GC tomorrow (9/17) as he will be there from 3-5 to help explain and re-confirm your specs with you.
  4. While I am not a club fitter such as Bubba or Cathi, I would like to chime in since I am an avid equipment analyzer as well as I played png golf clubs for over 25 years before switching to TITLEIST.  The entire concept of fitting lie angles for your game was pioneered by png as you may know.  That being said, there are many factors that one must consider.  For instance the shaft deflection or bend at impact can dramatically affect your lie angle in addition to your set up.  I have found that different shafts sometimes create a slightly different lie angle as a result.  While I would absolutely follow whatever your Titleist fitter has recommended understand that there other factors at work and that what you originally were fit for at png may be completely different now.  Furthermore, sometimes our swings change over time due to lessons etc...

    Hope this helps!

png irons are spaced 3/4* apart.   Titleist are 1/2* between the 5-PW.   3-4 and 4-5 are 1*

Png black dot 9 iron is 64* as is the Titleist 9 iron

When you get to the 8, the png is .25* flat (63.25 vs 63.5)

The png 7 is 1/2* flat vs the Titleist.  (62.5 vs 63)

The png 6 is 3/4* flat vs Titleist  (61.75 vs 62.5)

The png 5 is 1* flat vs Titleist (61 vs 62)

The png 4 is 3/4* flat vs Titleist (60.25 vs 61)

The png 3 is 1/2* flat vs Titleist (59.5 vs 60).

Blue Dot would be closer to Titleist standard (same lie angles on the 6 irons and 4 irons) but the 9 iron is .75 upright.  The png 5 is only .25* flat. The png 3 iron is .25 upright.
