iron length vs. lie angle

    When fitting someone to irons, I am trying to understand the relationship to a flatter lie angle as opposed to a shorter club. If a std club is too "upright", which adj is first made in fitting? Why does Titleist only offers -2 degree's vrs. other manufacturers that offer flatter lies than -2 degree's? Thanks Jeff M

    Thanks for the question. 

    It really all depends on the player. How solid one's contact is usually dictates what length the iron should be. For example, an individual with a more inside-out approach will likely benefit from a shorter club as a long club will bottom out before the ball and the shot will be heavy. The opposite usually hold true for individuals with a more outside-in approach. After the length is determined, most fitters move on to lie angle. 

    Again, this is all player dependent. My best suggestion is to see a local fitter and try the different options out.

    Hi Jeff, One of the reasons we don't offer more than 2 flat is because we don't get that many requests for flatter lies.  The other is that when we offer 4° upright, we actually have the head made at 2° up so we are only bending it 2°. We only have standard heads and not 2° flat heads made.   When you bend a head more than 2°, you take a chance on leaving marks. 
    That being said, we will bend it to 3° flat upon request.  We ask that the player signs off on the fact that there is a possiblility to have marks and on a chromed head, it is possible to crimp the chrome.

    Cathi; thanks for your reply as no one has ever told me or suggested anything less than -2*. I understand the "chrome" issue. I am currently experimenting with different lie's to find the best option, after doing so I want to order a new set of AP2's, thanks again for your help. Jeff M

    The length of shaft could be a factor in the players ability to hit it on-center.  I wouldn't compromise that in order to get a good mark on the lie board.

    Steve; Thanks for your input. Seems the best feel is -1/2" and -2.5*or -3.0*. When I get past -3*, the club doesn't feel the same at impact. The problem is -1" and -2*, is what I used to play but I lost distance with the shorter clubs. I have been trying to find the right fit with a longer iron. Haven't quite found it but feel I am closer. Jeff M
