I would like to get a little more distance out of my irons with a slightly higher ball flight. I am familiar with 'soft stepping irons' to increase ball flight but what about distance?

I currently play Tileist AP2 Project PXi 6.0 and hit my 7 iron about 145-150 yards. Instead of replacing with PXi 5.5; I would consider sending irons to Titleist and havem soft stepped or replacing with PXi 5.5. Not sure what the solution is but this is what I am thinking.

I know I should just get fitted but I would like to hear any opinions first.

i don't know about soft stepping. But I switched to KBS tour irons, which are lighter. I gained 10 to 15 yards on my irons.

Only way to truly tell which option is best for you is most likely find your local club fitter and get on Trackman to look at the numbers. What may give one person more distance may take away distance from another person.

    Totally agree.

When I was fitted for my AP2's about a year ago, the fitter soft stepped them with S300's. I gained some height and added about 10 yards per club. Best irons/shafts I've hit!

I would actually loft your irons more rather than soft stepping your shafts. If you like the spin rates your getting from your irons then you should not soft step as this would increase your spin rates as well or if you don't mind the extra weight make your clubs a 1/4 to a 1/2 inch longer.

  7. I have soft stepped once all my irons and wedges.  I do not see any increase in distance however I do have a slightly higher ball flight and spin is not significantly changed.  The reason I did it was to have a slightly softer feel at impact.  I have had the Titleist TPI Facility measure me twice with this over the last two years and received the same feedback.

A better way to get more distance is to deloft your irons and install new shafts with higher launch angle.  I would be curious if that advice is similar to what Will, Bubba or Cathi would suggest?

    Hope this helps!
