I recently had the good fortune to travel to San Diego for a New Year’s vacation.  Included in that trip were rounds at La Costa (Champions) and Torrey Pines (South) with my daughter.  But the golf highlight of the trip was an appointment for a full bag club fitting at Titleist’s Oceanside facility.

It all begins at 4033 Avenida de la Plata in Oceanside:

Admittedly, there were more than a few nerves as I stood in the parking lot and got ready to head into Titleist’s amazing facility:

After checking in at the front desk, you are quickly shown to the locker room to change your shoes, at which point you discover your assigned locker:

You then get a quick tour of the Titleist Performance Institute, the fabulously tricked-out space for golf-related exercise and fitness:

Followed by a quick trip to the official Titleist putting green for a few minutes to calm your nerves and collect your thoughts:

At that point, my club fitter for the day – Robert – picked me up and we headed out.  On the way out to the range, I got to peek into one of the two 3D-testing labs at the facility:

Finally, we hit the range for almost three hours of hitting different clubs and shots, all designed to maximize the potential that you have:

We started the fitting with irons and hybrids.  Robert ultimately fit me into AP1s (5 to GW-2) with standard lofts, 1 degree upright, ½ inch long, and Kuro Kage 85 shafts in a regular flex.  Coupled with these irons was one hybrid, a 915H with a 21 degree loft, standard length, C3 setting, with an Aldila Tour Blue 85 shaft in a regular flex.

After that, we headed over to a separate range area to work with Vokey wedges (sorry no pictures).  We started off on grass and tried 4 or 5 different grinds.  I consistently hit the K grind the best, both in a standard sand wedge and in a lob wedge.  But that wasn’t all, we then took the top 2 clubs and headed over to a test bunker.  Robert ultimately fit me into a 56 TVD K and a 60 TVD K, standard lofts, 1 degree upright, ½ inch long, and once again with Kuro Kage 85 shafts in a regular flex.

Finally, we headed back to the primary range to check out the Titleist drivers and fairway woods.  Robert ultimately fit me into a 915 D2 driver, C3 setting, with a Bassara W-Series shaft in a regular flex.  He coupled that with a 915F with a 16.5 loft and B2 setting, also with a Bassara W-Series shaft in a regular flex.

After all of that, it was time for a few final pictures to end the day.  Here I am standing next to all the fitting options with a big smile on my face:

And a final picture with Robert before I packed up and left for the day after almost 3 hours on the range:

What an amazing day and experience!

  2. Give this tour fitting to the golfer you love the most. They will be thrilled. Sorry B.W.L.

What a way to start the year. You look so happy. No better feeling in the world than getting the right clubs for your particular swing. Congratulations, John.
  4. Glad to hear you had a great experience. Sounds like you'll be on your way to shooting lower scores!

Great day John.  A lot better than the -13 degrees and white stuff on the ground, here this morning.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing.  I'm envious of your experience.  It sounds like it you learned a lot as well as having just as much fun.  Best of luck in the new year with your new clubs.

    Keith--

Thanks.  I'm pretty excited. I just found the few minutes I needed tonight to send my new specifications out to be priced by my two favorite Titleist suppliers in the Twin Cities. I can't wait to hear back.

Great post -- the clubfitting recs (Bassara shaft in the woods, Kuro Kage graphites in irons) underscore how much Titleist has expanded to fit a broad range of swing speeds.  I had the same experience during an Oceanside fitting in 2013 -- fantastic experience by a fantastic company.

Robert was my guy also!  I really enjoyed the wedge fitting part with him, it was amazing how he could tell by listening to swing and sound at impact as to which wedges would work best.  Also like the name on the locker, that must be new touch as I didn't get that last March!  Did they email any data or just specs? Good luck with your new sticks!

    Awesome experience for you.

Would love to get a whole bag fitting from Titleist. Ive done it at a Titleist Advanced Fitting Centre, but It would be a much better experience with a Titleist fitter

    Marc--

Robert was great. It was a great combination of technology and years of experience. As for your question, I just got my specifications. I didn't get any data. We just reviewed that while I was there during the sessions in which the Trackman were used.

    Thanks. J.A.C.

P.S. One other thing about the wedges. They had just replaced two or three of the different grinds with new clubs. I got to be the person to hit them.

The place has really expanded in recent years. I used to go out there regularly, when I lived in Oceanside, to do club testing for them when the facility first opened. It was a great place to hit balls back then. It looks spectacular now.

I better add this to my bucket list! I had no idea you could do all this at the Titleist Performance Institute.

I can't wait to have my bag all switched over to Titleist clubs. This kind of experience is why I love using Titleist.
