  1. I have an old set of DCI's with the S300 stiff shafts. I just turned 60 and I am wondering about getting a new set of AP2's but with different shafts. As I am getting older I think it might help to have a little less weight. I am a 7 handicap. Any suggestions? I am thinking of keeping stiff shafts but getting something a little lighter.

    Hi Dean,

This is just my personal suggestion. I'm not crazy about graphite shafts in irons, so you might consider True Temper Dynamic Gold SL. They are some 20% lighter than the regular Dynamic Gold and you can maintain the classic steel shaft look.

Hi Dean, I play AP2's as well and when I went through the fitting process, we considered all sorts of different lightweight shafts (steel) that had flight/launch characteristics to suit my swing. There are shafts like the XP 95's, KBS Tour shafts, etc. that may be well suited for your swing. It may be well worth exploring with a Titleist Fitter ...as I had mentioned in a post elsewhere, the Titleist fitters seem to have the more comprehensive knowledge of the products available.
  4. Thanks. I will look into this.

KBS stiff are only 120 grams and the kick-point will help get the ball in the air a bit.

Try the XP line of True Temper. They are lighter and come standard as in no up charge..

  7. I have been playing AP2s with the AD65i graphite shaft S flex for the past 8 months. Age=54 hdcp=2 5 iron=205 yds I have played graphite shafts in my irons since 1998.

I agree, the Dynamic Gold SL is a great lightweight shaft.  You may also want to consider the Nippon Pro 950GH and the Project X Pxi series.

Dean, my suggestion is to go to a certified Titleist fitter. They would have all of the different options and hopefully have a Trackman to gauge. At least then you would be able to see ball flights, check out weight and have advice from an expert to make your decision. Steve

I wouldn't use age as your only criteria, but it has been about a dozen years on your current set.  For a grand for a full set, it would be worth getting fitted to see if there is something in the newer hardware that might feel/work better now.  T. Watson missed the Open win at age 59 and was something like +12 this year - missing tools in the tool box, can't avoid some degradation.  There are now graphite shafts comparable to steel, steel fiber options in composites and plenty of weight options in steel.  If it is just an itch to replace the DCI's, you might want to wait for the 716s and the full list of new shaft options after the release.  Good luck in your next dozen years.

you might consider KBS tour in Stiff and soft step 1X...these will lighter and not as stiff as S300

    Hi Dean,

I play off a 7 too and got fitted to new irons to help  get me to that next level. I ended up getting  the XP95 S300 shafts in 714 CBs. They are incredibly light weight but still very stable. Feed back on miss hits is not as harsh as the dynamic gold shafts in my opinion, but you still know where the ball impacted. I switched from DG S300 to these and I've gotten a noticeably higher ball flight and my spin rates are where I want them, resulting in a 10 yard gain. The most notable difference is in my longer irons. Before I would have to play for 20 yards of roll out, but the new shafts boosted my carry and decent angle so I can stick longer par 3s.

Give them a try at your nearest fitting center and see if they make you go "wow!" like I did.

I used to play CB irons w/ S300 stiff shafts and  recently got a new set of irons with KBS Tour V shafts. I went to regular.

Love them. A lower ball flight with great carry distance and a bit less spin with great feel.. 100 grams vs 130. Stiffs are 110 grams

I recommend taking a look at them.
