There are a few courses I love in NE.

    TPC of Boston

    Newport CC

    Kittansett CC

    Sheltor Harbor

The Stow Acres CC in Stow, MA was interesting because they literally carved a golf course out of a forest.   You were either in the fairway or  the woods.  A couple of the doglegs were so sharp that one had to hit a 2 iron off the tee; otherwise straight in the trees.

Just played the Ranch in Southwick MA.  It's a very fun and interesting track.  There were many risk reward holes, and I found the course very fair.

I live in CT and the my favorite courses in the area are the two at the Lyman Orchards facility in Middlefield. They have a Robert Trent Jones design and a Gary Player design, I prefer the Jones but both are nice layous.

There is also Wintonbutry Hills in Bloomfield and Pine Valley in Southington but challenging tracks.

For public courses, I think you cannot go wrong with Newport National, Montaup, Triggs, or Fenner Hill in Rhode Island.

I haven't been to too many places, but my home course is Blackstone National. The rough is pretty rough, so you have to hit fairways here. Great staff. I also play Blissful Meadows a lot. They also have great staff, a practice bunker, and you can't get into too much trouble on the front nine. Both are fun courses.

How's Shinning Rock? It's quite a hike from my place (north shore) but I'm thinking of making a pilgrimage.

[/quote]Definitely a fun track and worth a turn. Let me know when you want to make the trip... it's just down the road from me.

    Cheers,

    I'm partial to:

Black Rock and The Country Club. Charles River is also a favorite. There are so many great tracks here in New England that it would be hard to choose. Never played Shining Rock, Mike do you like it?

My home course is Highfields out in Grafton but I definitely like to get a few rounds each year in at Shining Rock. Great people at Shining Rock and I always enjoy the different layout.

I bounce around a bit in the general area and hit most of the usual suspects a few times a year... Red Tail, Butter Brook, Cyprian Keyes, New England Country Club and Blackstone are a few of the courses on the rota for me when the snow melts.

I had no idea that you were located so close to my town. We should get together for a round of 19 holes one of these days.

    Sounds like a plan.

Now only if we can get the snow to melt.

I've heard that Shining Rock is a unique course. I just looked at its site and they have a lot of long par 3s and short par 4s. That coupled with the gorges looks challenging.

I hear great things about Butter Brook too. Counting down the days...

Butter Brook is a GREAT course with wonderful staff....We play it weekly. As most folks know that have played it, the front and back nines are very different....The back 9 has a definite links feel with a lot of risk/reward holes especially the closer you get to the end. A good 19th hole too!

As us New Englanders know and with the winter as it is here, we play a lot of indoor golf on the simulators at Pappas Golf & Baseball. Not the same as "real" golf, but it keeps you swinging year round and ready to go out when the weather finally breaks for good!

Uuuuuuuugggggg! Snow again!  I know it's supposed to warm up, but I always try to log a round by St. Paddy's day. Not looking good this year...

    think spring

I was able to sneak in a quick range session today in short sleeves!!  Seems like winter has finally receded.

Since this has been a moderately popular thread, I figured I would throw it out there- I am a member of Thomson country club in North Reading, and was wondering if some of my fellow Team Titleist mates would be down to do a little gathering. Depending on how many people we get, I can talk to our pro and see if we can get some preferred times on a weekend. Maybe we can even play a little tournament.Perhaps Titleist will even be cool enough to toss us some pin prizes. It's a really good track, and there's a decent bar across the street for anyone who's into playing 19 holes. If anyone is interested just let me know.

That place is right in my town, but I have never been there. I will have to make it a point to play there this spring. I don't like mandatory carts though. I am pretty sure that you have to use a cart for all tee times except twilight golf hours.

I'm in Connecticut too and I really enjoy playing at Fox Hopyard, Lake of Isles, Rockledge and over in Rhode Island, Meadowbrook and Newport National.  But then again, I enjoy the opportunity to play anywhere

  29. Definitely Wannamoisett CC. It's tough, well built, and hosts the Northeast Amateur every year and is sure to offer a challenging experience every time you play.
