Anchored putter

Gary D

Does anyone else have a problem with how Bernhard Langer putts ? I know he supposedly doesn't anchor the putter against his chest anymore but its awful close. The manner that he addresses the ball and then at the last minute moves the putter handle a slight amount away from his chest just before beginning his swing is iffy. He is the only person in a position to tell if he has in fact moved the handle away from his chest. If technically legal, I think it still goes against the spirit of the new rule on anchored putters.

Have no problem with it at all. First of all, penalties are self governed in the game of golf all the time. Secondly, he has lots of cameras on him.

I completely agree with you, Gary. There is barely a difference from before in my opinion.

I'm not a fan of it, but the ban is against anchoring, not against using a long putter, and as long as he's not touching his chest, he's well within the rules. I do think it's questionable that he does an anchored practice stroke first. It might be that he does it because he is use to that feel. But you know it's going to put questioners into people's minds. I have watched a couple of different shows on the golf channel, and in everyone of them, they all said that Bernhard is the most honest, upstanding guy. There could be a problem though when others who maybe aren't so honest are doing it, or in amateur play where people, aren't watching from all angles.

I agree...his putting stroke seems like a gray area to me!

As long as his arm ( elbow/forearm) isn't anchored to his body and the top hand is cleared of his body it is good to go.

Not agreeing with the rule in the first place, I don't have an issue with how he putts. For the record, I don't use nor have ever used an anchored stroke.

He is certainly toeing the line. As long as his hand and arm are not touching his body, he's fine. But he's so close, I wouldn't be surprised if someone challenged him at some point this year.

I'm with you 100% on that Keith. If Langer's stroke isn't flagged by those folks, so be it. I hope they reconsider this rule anyway.
I've not used an anchored stroke either.
