cantputt00, that's not a downer at all.  Thanks for sharing, it's a great story.

Like you, I can't play golf with my dad anymore.  He passed away a little 5 years ago from cancer.  He was my favorite golfing partner.  He taught me so many lessons on life and golf.  I miss him very much.  Especially when my sons (ages 3 and 5) now go with me to the range.  He died before both of them were born.  I often think about how much fun he would have seeing his grandsons taking up golf and all four of us hacking away.  

I'm a duffer for life, which is fine by me, it doesn't diminish my love of the game.  My favorite golf memory was golfing with my dad and brother-in-law at Ft. Benning's golf course (Brother-in-law was stationed there.)  

On a par four, I had hit it into the far rough about 120 yards from the green.  I had a tree in my way that I had to go over and land it on the front of the green in a space about 8 feet wide.  I hit the perfect shot and landed it right where I was aiming.  My dad already on the green and had a view of what I didn't know, which was there was a steel plate right where I was aiming that covered the sprinkler heads.  My ball hit that, bounced about 20 feet in the air and into the woods on the other side.  So much for the perfect shot.

It was in the same round that my dad gave me the best golf tip I've ever received.  I was in my 20's and a bit of a hothead.  I was getting angry at some bad shots.  He said, "if you worked half as hard at your schoolwork as you did golf, you'd be a straight A student."  I calmed down and have never had a blow up on a course since.  

I'm 37 now.  

Last September had the opportunity of a lifetime...Flew into Monterey and stayed at the Pebble Beach Lodge.  While there we played 18 at Spanish Bay, 36 at MPCC, 18 walking at Cypress Point, and finished on a beautiful September morning at Pebble Beach.  Probably won't have another opportunity like that in my lifetime.  We savored every last moment of each and every day.  It was magical!

My favorate memory is my first par 4 birdie. 290 yards to the hole, and I drove it just off the right side of the green. I knew it was going to be an easy up and down, but I almost boned the chip. I still had a 10 foot putt for birdie, and I made it. This was the beginning of last summer, just under a year since I started playing. The course is in northern Rhode Island.

My favorite moment was my husband's favorite, too!.  He wanted to surprise me with a special golf trip for our anniversary and set it up to visit some friends and play several courses on the Monterey Penninsula.  Our last day, we teed it up at Cypress Point and it was a lovely day -a little cool and a little fog.  The greens were slick and we were having a great time.  I took pictures and short videos of tee shots and the ocean.  The guys were all playing from the tips and we got to 16.  Now, the tips are way back by that tree and all carry.  I set up my camera to take pictures of everyone's swing and my husband got to the tee with his new 3 wood and new Titleist ball.  I took the picture and started watching the ball.  Our playing partners and our caddy were both getting very excited and they started yelling "that's going to go in the hole!!" - mind you, the ball was still in the air.  Well, wouldn't you know it - it landed and rolled right into the hole! A hole in one from the back tees on the 16th hole at Cypress Point.  A magical moment.  It turns out it was only the 2nd hole in one in the history at Cypress from the back tees.  It still makes me smile when I think about it :)

That is awesome Cathi, that would have been great to witness. That's a memory of a lifetime and those bad days on the course make up for with a shot to remember like that.

My best golf memory is simply trying to get as many holes in as possibel before dark, and squeaking in a few more..  Late summer nights started on the golf course, then went to the putting green, but never faded away...

I got the pleasure of play with the FootJoy guys in the second annual FJA.  The event was at Rhode Island CC (right on the ocean) and we played in a downpour.  The conditions were tough, but the company was so good, our FJ jackets kept us dry, and the round was amazing.  It was the best!

No specific single outing.....there were many great ones.....trips to Cape Cod with the guys, Myrtle and Virginia Beaches with the kids when they were just starting to play.....but when my younger son was in high school, be caddied at Ballyowen in northern NJ, and that meant that he and Dad played in the evening when he was through for the day....many nights that meant playing until dark....and the nights where the bagpiper was playing as the sun went down.....doesn't get much better than that.....!

Shot a 95 which was my personal record on my birthday last summer.  Bird on 16, put a ball from 100 yards out up a super steep incline 5 feet from the pin.  When we went out celebrating that night I made sure to let EVERYONE know about it lol!

I have two. The first was in '77 on my honeymoon. We played Pebble and I birdied number 8 - still can picture the shot going over the gorge. Cost for the two of us? $75 including cart. Times have changed!

The other great memory was playing Pine Valley. I was a last minute invitee to round out a group of eight. Flew into Philly (from Chicago) in the morning and was on the first tee at 1 pm. Stayed overnight in the clubhouse but couldn't sleep a wink. Ended up in the library at 2 am watching a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf video, supposedly the only tv event ever at PV. Second day played another 18, had lunch including their famous turtle soup, played the "short course" in the afternoon (10 holes replicating original PV holes with the drive eliminated) and flew out.

When speaking with the better half, of course Pebble is my favorite golf experience. But, I gotta say, Pine Valley is the greatest course I ever stepped on. Now, if I can just find someone with ties to Augusta . . .
