So, I play collegeiate Golf in Chicago, IL. My past round I shot an 80, which is not THAT bad, but I also had 7 5/8-Foot par putts that lipped out. Needless to say my confidence is GONE and am looking for any kinds of tips that are available. Thank you Titleist Family, and congrats to Adam Scott!

    Cheers & KCCO,

Something that may help you is to have the back on your left hand (assuming you are righty) follow through to your target. This worked for me when I was in a putting slump.

    Tony,

I will try and exaggerate my follow-through to see if this helps. Thank you so much for the thoughts!

I would suggest practicing shorter putts with 1 hand.  If you are are a righty, practice putting at half the distance with your right hand only - left hand if you are a lefty.  This will help you keep your hands steady.

Once you have become consistent with the 1 hand style, add your other.  If you are continuing to have difficulty, it might be the way you are reading the greens...

    Todd,

Thank you! I am a righty so I will definitely try the right hand only drill. We have an indoor facility so I can get a lot of work done in the next few days!

    Thanks again!

    Cheers and KCCO,

    Adam,

I would work with the local pro to watch your stroke.  Sounds like a minor tweak could get you back in alignment.  Missing the hole altogether is different than lipping them out.

    Good Luck and enjoy.

story of my life dude. dont get too down on your game, we all have bad days. i always used to use a traditional right hand low grip and noticed my putting stroke was extremely shaky. almost made a figure 8 through the stroke. not good. i recently switched to a left hand low grip. it took a while to get used to it and to find a good solid comfortable grip but after a few rounds and trips to the practice green, it feels perfectly normal and my stroke is completely free and straight and smooth. i still miss putts but thats a case of it being the archer, not the arrow. if you know what i mean.

hope this helps! good luck in your career. wish i could be in your shoes bud.

Adam, you plight is not uncommon, but there is a simple cure. First, poor putting (especially inside of 10 feet) is most often due to poor contact. Since I can't see your stroke, it's my guess you hit a lot of putts in the heel and, as a result, pull them. One pro, years ago, made mention of this on an NBC golf telecast. What happens is golfers sole the putter and, when they take it back, the sole sticks a bit to the grass and causes you to take it outside then hit it in the heel or cut across it. The cure is to lift the putterhead slightly off of the ground before you take it back. Don Pooley was famous for this on tour and he was a great putter.

Aside from that, may I suggest you take a  look at TWs stroke and note how ROCK STEADY his is on putts. Every joint in his body, including his legs, elbows and wrists are more or less frozen. Also, note how his left armpit area stays firmly connected as he simply rotates his left shoulder down going back and left shoulder up through the ball. Keeping steady insure solid contact, allowing you to get putts started on you intended line almost 100% of the time. Solid contact will improve your feel on long putts and, you confidence on short putts. Also, imagine a small thumb tack or push pin is in the back of the ball and drive to hit the tack so squarely that you might drive it into the ball. This will improve your focus on the back of the ball further insuring solid contact.

Finally, you might try a great putting drill for hitting your line on short putts. Set down 2 balls about 2 feet apart on a level part of the practice green. Then, putt one ball to hit the 2nd ball. Leave the 2nd ball where it ends up and bring the first ball back to where your originally putted. Then, do it again. When you miss, start over. When you get to a point where you can hit the 2nd ball 10+ times. Start over. This drill serves to 1. get you to hit shorts more firmly (I've never seen anyone not get the first ball to the 2nd ball using this drill) and 2. build confidence putting to a small target.

I hope that helps you and the rest of TT members that struggle with putting.

    Fred,

Thank you so much! definitely A LOT of good points and tips. I will try the 2 ball tip and hopefully I can fix it before our Conference on Monday. Thanks again!

perhaps your putting is fine - and the putts just didn't drop that day - we don't make every 5 - 8 foot putt.  And being that those putts were for par put extra pressure on you.

I would not despair - if you are shooting in the 70s and low 80s you are obviously doing a lot of things right, so just practice practice practice!

    Best of luck,

    Jason

     Adam,

I had this same problem last summer and what really helped me was improving my visualization skills. Seeing the line and seeing the ball go in the hole. I had to learn to see the whole hole if that makes sense. I wasnt seeing breaking putts going in the side of the hole. I would only see the front of the hole.

That and positive self-talk have really improved my putting.
