Now that i'm eagerly waiting for my new 714 to arrive although i know that i still have to wait about a month, i'm contemplating whether i should get iron covers or not. i was wondering what the fellow TT members think.  Is it worth it?  If you think it is, any recommendations?

I like t keep my irons looking good - they are durable so they may as well look new. I found  a lot of iron covers on ebay that are made of neoprene with various manufacturers labels on them. I bought ones with the Ben Hogan label, but you may be able to find a generic set. They have kept my irons "ding free".

To each their own, I only use them when used with travel case! I love the chatter sound!

Well stated, Todd. the chatter of the irons while walking down the fairway just sounds like golf. Still, the only wear marks I like are the ones that leave a spot the size of a quarter on the faces of my irons. To me, the dings on the back and sole always made them look old, weary and a constant reminder to buy new irons. Besides, we use covers on "woods", why not the irons, too? Also, it seems the old irons from the 50's and 60's never seemed to ding as much. They may have used a different chrome formula, back in the day.

  5. Obviously, this is a personal preference however anyone that I play with that uses iron covers conveys that they are not a "serious" golfer for some strange reason I do not understand...However, I can understand the comment on clinking of irons as you walk down the fairway...albeit I never seem to notice it myself with my AP2's.  Just my two cents.

LOL - iron covers not only keep the clubs looking good, they're great for for making an opponent overconfident.

I had a set of 710 AP2's for a little over a year without covers. They really got beat up. I purchased a new set of irons a year ago this November, then got some covers for them. Now, after thousands of range balls they fall into the category of "Butter Face".  (Everything butter face looks new)  I was never an iron cover guy, but they do work.

[/quote]Heheheheh....Chris, I never really thought about it, but the iron covers might get me extra strokes, along with warming up with my goofy looking swing. LOL Maybe I should also start warming up swinging left handed? That might really get me some extra "pops".

Freddy... I like the idea of using the club covers to make your opponent over confident!  Quite funny!  I will have to admit I have never tried that approach (nor have I tried warming up left handed) but I like where your head is.  I'm glad you are letting the cat out of the bag on your secret tricks....

kind of a "chatter" man myself.  Don't really want "Pretty Boy" irons.  I want them to shout 'you're about to go three down'!  Just saying......

I personally would never use iron covers.  To me, they make you look like an old guy who is over confident.  Sure you don' want them to get dinged up, but they will eventually anyway.  Plus don't you want to show off your beautiful irons??  Just my two cents.

In my youth as a caddy I despised club covers, lose one lose a tip.  Still despise them, although I do put covers on my woods for travel then take and throw them in the trunk after I'm at my destination.  While playing they are just too much trouble for me.  Club house Lost and Founds are always full of club head covers.  On the plus side, they do work.  If you play and have a caddy, its a good annoyance tool.

I am all about iron covers and have already gone through two sets.  All I can find overseas are the neoprene covers that do fit anything except oversized irons.  Out of two rounds of golf I played, driving and walking, I lost the majority of them.  I was playing iron cover pick up more than I was playing golf.  I have found iron covers that have zippers on them that apparently stay on better. I will get some when I get back, do not like to ding my nice 714 MB's up.

I was an iron cover guy for 30+ years until I read recently that iron covers can trap moisture in the cover. Although I don't want nicks in my irons, the reason for the covers, I want rust spots even less. So, I've abandoned the covers. Will sell cheap.
