For those of you lucky ones with the TT bag tag -

In getting ready to go to SD this weekend, I discovered that my TT tag is no longer attached to the bag I took to DC in October.  Someone in Security at Reagan National must now be the proud owner of a TT tag.  I don't think my travel bag has ever gone through security anywhere without being searched.

I've been careful to keep jewelry with my personal carry-ons, I'll now have to extend this to any item with intrinsic value as well as monetary value.

It's pretty hard to feel more secure traveling when you've been violated at the same time.

    Thanks Don,

Heading there tomorrow.  I'll pack the bag tag on the carry on.

This is a good point when traveling.  I always keep anything with value in my carry on bag as opposed to my checked golf bag.  I even keep the new balls I take to play with in my carry on as I have has sleeves of ProV1x balls disappear.  I never though to extend this to the TT bag tag or any other items but it is a good recommendation.

Have a good trip and fun out in California!

The TSA is doing a great job of encouraging people to use FedEX.  It's getting to the point where it's cheaper and easier to ship your bags than to actually carry them with you.  Sucks about the bag tag.  Maybe you'll get a new one (or something better) at the TT event.

The TSA must have to inspect EVERY golf bag - they search mine every trip I take the clubs. If only the TSA employees and baggage handlers were watched with great scrutiny. It stinks we have to entrust our valuables to others who have no scruples.

When flying I usually pack new balls and gloves in my carry on luggage.

Does anybody remove their Driver and Metal Heads and pack them in your carry on for travel?

What are the current TSA rules on bringing Laser Range Finder devices in your carry on luggage?

    Cheers,

    Dr. K

I'm sorry about your bag tag.  I'll use FedEx from now on.  Not that I travel with my clubs much, but I also feel a lot better about the way FedEx would handle my clubs than the manhandling they would likely undergo at an airport.

I always put my laser rangefinder in my carry on bag and have never been questioned (and I travel quite a bit with my golf gear), so I am assuming that they are approved for carry on baggage.

Doc, you are allowed to carry on the rangefinders, they may ask when going through the scan and it's an easy explanation.. Had a lengthy chat on TCC about TSA.. You CAN ask that your bag be searched in your presence to ensure the put clubs back in right place and nothing comes up missing, if they refuse, ask for that guys name and ask for his supervisor..

they rearranged my club se route to Jamaica and they chipped two graphite shafts. TSA searches golf bags because of their size and fertilizer sets off uber sensitive machines...

I actually have packed the rangefinder in my carry-on, and one time they inspected that because they thought it contained a lithium ion battery.  Well, mine uses a 9V alkaline.  Still confuses me because you are supposed to pack your LI-ions in your carry-on and not put them in checked bags.

Unfortunately, Fedex is a limited option as I travel for work and the bag flies free.  But tempting.

Mike, that might be a great idea - remove the heads and carry them and rangefinders (plus TT bag tag) in carry on luggage. I looked using Fedex but it's not cost-effective yet.

I have found that it is better to use Fed Ex for bringing my clubs along.  It is cheaper and there is no need to hit the luggage pick up when arriving or worring about it when checking in.  Sorry about your bag tag....

Sorry to hear about your bag tag.  I agree with everyone here...use FedEx next time.   :)

I always check my bag due to preferred status on USAir so its free.  Knock on wood, never had an issue, but I never travel with any accessories (pivot tools, ball marks, bag tags, etc.) that I couldn't afford to lose.  Never tried FEd Ex because the cost is prohibitive, but some friends have and it worked well for them.

Wow!!!  Didn't think it would happen.....

Arrived in San Diego, no problems....checked the bags...

Arrived late in Utah last night, got home, opened the travel bag, nice letter from TSA letting me know they searched the bag and it happened..... No Bag Tag, and they took my alignment sticks.

Here is how you keep bag tags from "walking away", use zip-ties. Once attached, you have to cut the zip-tie to get the tag off. They can be found in any home center or hardware store where they keep electrical supplies. Get the black ones, because they are UV resistant and made for outdoor use. Hope this helps.

  17. Bummer, I have not had that problem ever with my clubs on airlines...sorry to hear the news...just arrived in SD, see you tomorrow!

Yeah, things are getting pretty sad.  But I had a similar loss before TSA.  I buy a bag tag and a yardage book everywhere I go when they are available.  Somewhere between Pittsburgh and Houston someone took all of the bag tags I had on a staff bag, the bag inside a respectable travel bag.  They didn't care about the clubs, all the rain gear I had, a dozen balls, just the tags, go figure!

Sorry to be so long saying something, didn't see this before BUT.....a word to the wise.......and not to cast ALL TSA folks in the same dim light, or ALL airline luggage folks, but it only takes one......EVERY time I travel, I ALWAYS put anything of value, (new balls, laser rangefinder, GPS etc.) that is normally in my bag, into my carry-on, AND I put the oldest, dirtiest, crappy headcovers on my woods and putter and flip the bag over so the irons are all on the bottom, the bag of couse also being one of my older ones saved just for the travel.  Hopefully they look and decide there is nothing worth stealing, or at least they have to work to do it.  Like I said the majority of these folks, like Ivory Soap are 99 44/100's pure, (and I've been in law enforcement for over 30yrs) but I don't want regret getting the one bad one.  Take it for what it's worth

Tom, I agree...anything of value should go into your carry on.  One TT Member at the San Diego Outing told me about how he actually takes the heads off his woods and puts them into his carry on as well!  I have not experienced any problems in 2013 (knock on wood) taking my clubs and valuables via Delta all around the United States however like Tom mentioned it basically only takes one bad apple to ruin it for everyone else!

    Travel safe!

I put my name on my bag tag with a label maker. It looks like it was part of the tag. I've been through 6 airports and it's still there.
