I don't know how you guys in the north don't go absolutely crazy.  It has been bitterly cold in my neck of the woods this winter with highs in the low 30s and lows in low 20s.  All the courses are closed.  I'm slipping into a depression.  One reason I live in the south is for mild winters.

It's funny how when I can't get out and play golf, I typically try not to think about it.  Is anyone else like that?  Maybe that's why I haven't been posting lately.  Makes me too sad to dream about golf without the opportunity to actually play it.  :)

    HERE'S TO SPRING!

I am going completely crazy! Especially this year since I haven't been able to play since last summer!

Maybe this will cheer you up...You will be able to play WAAAYYYY before we will :(

     Cheers Memphis! Here's to spring!

I've played once in the last six weeks.  We have windchills in the negatives numbers right now.  It's driving me crazy(ier).......

The cold has been so intense this year.  The heated bays have been closed at our local public range.  Can't wait for spring - despite what the groundhog had to say...

I feel for all the folks getting hammered this winter. I am a retired Ironworker who spent 40 winters erecting steel on buildings and bridges in NYC. When I retired 4 years ago, I headed south on I-95 'til I got to Florida and never looked back.

I spent January in southern Alabama, playing some nice courses in Mississippi and in the Mobile, AL area. But, now it is back to the frozen north. Can't wait for spring. I'll have to say that getting away for a few rounds saved my sanity. Can't wait for spring, when I test my new Vokey wedges.

    Sanity control:

    1. Alcohol

    2. Drugs

    3. Time to (re)build the swing/body for the upcoming season w/o worrying about the score

    4. Heated bays with outdoor ranges and simulators are popular.  I can play Pebble Beach w/o losing a ball on #7.

Not all of these apply to all of us...  J

i guess you get used to it.  for me in the mid atlantic, there's a certain rhythm to the seasons: the change in colors and falling leaves start the winding down of of the golf season.  the rounds get fewer and fewer after the daylight savings switch, especially when a noon tee time doesn't guarantee finishing in daylight.

late fall and winter are for storing the clubs in the basement and surviving the holidays.  if the weather's nice in march, i can steal a round or two from the calendar.  otherwise it's beer and bar food while watching the masters before the season really gets going.

all that said, here's to the winter weather breaking soon!

    Hey memphisunited,

I was fearing the same depression was going to hit me when I came back from the TT San Diego outing.

The only good to come out of this constant Arctic Blast seems to be the opportunity to focus one's golf game via the gym with range time limited to once a week. I know swing speed will definitely benefit as well as control during the swing.

The 'off-season' is TPI time, so hook up with a TPI certified pro if you haven't already.

    Hey AJAR,

I feel you pain!  It's been the worst winter ever.  I know this because an 87 year old guy at the range told me so.

Usually you can golf in New England till about mid december and you can tee it back up for St. Paddy's day.  My course closed December 2nd and is aiming for the 23rd of March to open (we're supposed to get snow today, so that might get pushed back).  The little range I frequent is running out of balls because they can't pick in this snow.  I'm freaking out here!

Our trip to San Diego was great, and yes, I just got back from Hawaii, but I need to golf more than 3 times in 4 months!  I don't think I could make it 1/4 of the year without golf.

The TPI and exercise has been good.  I've lost a bunch of weight, but my sanity is at it's wits end.

This has been the worst winter for golf than I can remember in the last 10 years. I live in central Arkansas and the weather for the most part has been below 50 degrees which is my minimum comfort range. The past two weeks finally have been above my comfort range and today it will get into the 70's but with the warmer temps come thunder storms and 2 to 3 club winds. Before you know it we will be complaining about the heat. The Masters next week will be the beginning of a great year of golf for all of us as old man winter finally goes away.

Upstate NY just had a foot of snow, so my first round at my home course is going to be delayed.

While I may not be on the course, there is still plenty of golf related activities.  For me it's working out that extra day or two, checking out the TPI website for various golf-related exercises, read golf magazines, watch golf on TV, listen to golf, visit a driving range with heated bays, and work on that putting stroke.

I am also president of my golf league so I have to make sure everyone in our group is ready to go.

No short legs here, but plenty of snow. We'll be lucky if we are on the course by mid April. So much for global warming!
  20. Weather improving. Less rain but colder. Still no reason to stay at home. Temperature above zero, so all steam ahead for season starting in April. Reckon I've a shot or two up my sleeve. Problem is, can anyone suggest a cure for  Medal Tee Syndrome ?

This years winter is playing out to be a tough one in Ohio and the US in general.  In Ohio it has been bitter cold, snow, ice, more snow, and where I'm at there is now a high likelihood of a flood when all this melts.  So golf is probably going to be a late start this year in eastern Ohio especially if we get some bad flooding.  So cheer up, you'll probably be playing before most of us in the north.

Now you know why we look forward to January, because at least there's golf on TV then (I mean real golf, not the silly off season stuff), and then to the start of at least having Masters commercials on TV...!! Every now and then we have a February here in western Mass. where we can hit balls somewhere outside (doesn't look like this will be one of those years...!), but the usual goal is to be able to play before the baseball season starts....we usually are happy when we can have a "10 on, 2 off" year.....more typically it's 9 and 3 though....

Indiana weather this winter has gotten the best of me.  I really prefer it to be hot, but I do play in the upper 40's if its at least sunny.  I will bundle up just to kick start the golf season, but that start appears it's going to be delayed even longer than normal years.  Going to try and visit an indoor range / simulator in a few weeks, or maybe check out some clubs at Galaxy or Golfsmith.  I'm itching to get out there, putting on the carpet isn't doing a lot to minimize it any more.

Up here in Eastern Canada, (Prince Edward Island) our season runs May 1 - Oct 31. (this would be for the fair weather golfers, however hardcore/crazy guys like myself get out around April 15 - November 30.  So we are running on a 5-6 month off season......alot of time (if you don't have kids, which i do so it goes by quicker then it used to)

Golf Channel, reading WRX posts/forums along with Titleist/Scotty Cameron forums, I play TW masters 2014 historic edition, (alot of courses to pick from) etc. We have some indoor simulators we can use. we don't have any full indoor hitting areas, so it  can be a long wait......however coming into March, the Masters is upon us, we always get together for that for the full Saturday round.
Bottom line in this part of Canada we have to be very creative! I just got some new to me (used) irons, so I am cleaning them up (new ferrules, grips) and basically make "excuses" to go to the basement to fix something......wife is onto me though!

Golf Channel, Golf Channel, Golf Channel. But that probably makes it worse in reality. The new 714AP2's are staring me in the face, sitting in the unused new mid staff bag, crying out for a date. Spent yesterday puting logos on 2 dozen Pro V1's, and the day before replacing parts on the push cart, all while cleaning the grips in front of coverage of Pebble Beach. And that stupid rodent in PA didn't make things any easier with his prognostication either. Grin and bear

Here in Connecticut, we've had a rough couple of weeks of cold and snow.  I have 23 consecutive month playing streak that is in severe jeopardy, unless I decide to drive south.

Before taking up gold @ 40, I was an active guitarist, and now, that's what I do in the winter.  Singing the blues about not being able to play from the tips!

Winter in the Northeast can be brutal for a golfer.  If the forecast holds, by the end of the week we'll have had 5 snow storms in 2 weeks.  It can get pretty depressing looking at my clubs just sitting in the basement.  But I think it makes me appreciate the summer months more.  And it builds more excitement and anticipation for the Masters.

I think the cure for the winter golf blues is the Golf Channel, right?  Where else can you go through beautiful top-notch golf courses each week and just wish you were there playing yourself.  You can get a little fix when the weather improves for a day or two or, if possible, play a little get away mid-winter to make sure the swing is still there.  Regardless of what the groundhog says the daye are getting longer!

  32. Hello all,

I use this time to start window shopping. Make a list of the new gear I'm interested in, say a 3W, and then write down the spec's for each manufacturer so I can compare and see who's trying to claim more distance but really is just using a longer than normal shaft. Likewise with the irons but check the lofts to see who's jacked a 6I up to 27 from a more traditional 30-ish.

Use this time for fitness and stretching so when the demo days DO arrive, you don't pull every muscle in your upper torso because you haven't hit a ball in 4 months. If you can find one in your neck of the woods, find a range with a dome or with covered stalls. Bundle up with some layers and get out and hit a small bucket on a Saturday. Nothing full force just some nice smooth 7, 8, 9  irons to knock the rust off your swing.

We'll be on the tee box before you know it!

Luckily here in CT where I live we have a decent indoor facility, it has not been above 25 * but twice in about 3 weeks so that place is getting quite a bit of use. 4 sand traps, pitching area, 6 simulators, full swing and putting areas.

Last time I was able to tee it up was DEC. 29  it was about 40 that day, now that would seem like a heat wave !  In November I purchased a set of AP1 Irons and a new Titleist 3 wood but I haven't been able to hit them in a temp over40* outside yet.

Waiting patiently  [well maybe not so patiently] for spring to get here, all I know is first groundhog I see is a dead varmint !

Low of 20 sounds fantastic.........Try low of -30 with wind chills of -50!!!

  35. It really seems more depressing this year , probably b/c it's been colder than usual.  But it is good to let the body heal for a few months.  Pounding golf balls year round probably isn't good for the back, elbows, etc.

It's not hard.  I play in temps from 30 degrees and up.  You can get out of this easy by working on your putting and chipping at home and if you have a basement or room big enough you can make your own practice net and work on making your swing better.

  40. Depressed! You're having a laugh. Emigrate to Scotland and play all year round, even when the temperatures are in the 30s. Don't be so girly and buy a set of thermals and a wooly hat and get out there. Good shooting Memphis!!

What's worse is when you see sunny skies every day, 80 degree weather right now as I look out on my course, and watch people play when I've been laid up for a serious elbow injury.  Have barely played at all since January 1st.  A few holes, but that's it.  I played 373 rounds last year.  I haven't completed 18 holes yet!

I feel your pain!  And I feel mine worse.

I wish you a fast recovery Vern. I know your hurting from injury and not playing. I was going through the winter blues hard a couple of weeks ago. I call up my cousin and asked him if he wanted to get outta here. We made plans over the weekend and were in Myrtle Beach bye wed. The weather was good enough(mid 50's but windy) to get 4 rounds in. My uncle lives in MB and works a Willbrook Plantation. Nothing like free golf and home cooking in MB to break the winter blues. It was just what I needed.
