You know what I'm talking about.  That one tournament where you get the most bragging rights, biggest pay day, or both.  I'm lucky enough to have 3 this year.  I've got my club's 3 day member guest in July,  a two man scramble at my old course back home in Colorado this June and our Club Championship at the end of the season.

I'd have to say the Club Championship takes the cake.  Ours is a stroke play qualifier, then 4 matches.  There's a lot of cash that gets tossed around, and you get serious bragging rights.  I mean, you get a parking spot next year if you win.

So what's your Major season look like?  Do you have one you'd like to win just a little bit more than the others?

    Hi Josh,

    Great question!

I would have to say the Massachusetts State 4-ball is quickly becoming my major.  I truly enjoy playing with my good friend, Alex. It also doesn't hurt that we have won it twice.

I would love to hear some more comments. What is everyone elses major?

    Talk soon.

For me, it's definitely the club championship. We have a two-day event at the course that is straight medal play. The course is always in perfect condition, the fairways are firm, greens are fast and the pin placements are a bit more challenging than usual.

I mark it on the calendar every year and always hope that this is the year for me to take home top honors.

I have a group that plays each week, the Memphis Golf Nuts.  We keep stats and points each week to hand out yearly awards.  We usually play one official round each weekend, but three times a year, we play our "majors."  They are two day events.  We also have a Ryder Cup style event each year.  This year we'll have a special TT guest player coming along.

I also play a few other tournaments each year that are my personal majors, like the local Publinks and a couple of three day 2-man events.  This is beginning a great time of year for golfers!

    We have a couple events.

    1) The clubs Matchplay Championship.

This runs through out the summer and it's head-to-head.

    2) the Calcutta.

The Calcutta may be a little higher up on the board because it is a 2-man team event ran over two days.  You must be on your game both days to be successful.

The Club Championship (defending champion) is for sure a major.  I also attend a 3 day event at Paiute in Las Vegas that is a big money major.  There are a bunch of tournies in the area that offer great paydays if you place.  But the two listed above are the ones I practice the most for.

Plus this year I am attending a gathering of Memphis Golf Nuts inHot Springs, AR. for a Ryder Cup event and 3 days of drinking and lies.

Josh - the Ryder Cup event is pretty fun.  Nine really nice courses in the Hot Springs Villages.  We play a different course each day.  12 players per team in four ball and singles format.  Plus, like Tim said, beer and lies.

Over the past five years, I have focused on one of my club's Match Play championship as my major.  Haven't had much luck, but except for the first year (and this year) I've been moved into the Open division, rather than the Senior division.  This year, I also decided to enter the Texas GA's South Regional Senior Amateur, Super Senior division.  I did not do well, but it really pushed me to work on my game.  My other club started a series of tournaments last year that the organizer hopes to develop into "must play" tournaments for Houston amateurs.  These include a Stroke Play tournament, a 4Ball, and a 2 man Scramble.  Have done okay in the two-man tourneys, not so well in the Stroke Play.  And a league I play in has a two day season end tournament, played on two different courses, in the fall.  I'd love to win the "A" flight of that one, but am not there yet.

I've played old Newbury before. 9 is one of the toughest holes out there.  Good members too

Thanks for the response. You are so right , that everything comes down to the people.

Hopefully Mike or Bubba will have another day at Pinehills or somewhere else, so we can play together again.

My major is the County Senior Amatuer.  I've only played in it the last couple of years, but it gives me a chance to really focus on my game for a few weeks in preparation.  There are two flights - Gross and Net.  I always just enter the gross flight - I've never been fond of handicap tournaments.  If someone is a better player or has a better day than I, then they deserve to win.  I've not won the 36-hole event which is played on two different courses, but I can be competitive if I put together two of my better rounds, and usually at least finish high enough to win back my entry fee.  So it's worth trying.  But at 74, I was in graduate school when some of these guys were born - so my chances are likely to diminish as time goes on.

I won't play the regular County Amatuer - that one is out of reach for me, playing straight up from the tips against people a half-century younger and sixty yards longer off the tee doesn't seem like it would be as much fun.  But against the "old" guys ....

The tournament that is my major is the World Amateur Handicap Championship held in Myrtle Beach. It is always played the last week of August leading up to Labor Day. It is awesome with more than 3000 golfers utilizing 75+ courses. Four days of competition to qualify for the final day. Finally last year, I was in the top ten of my flight and yes, for the first time I used a Pro V1x for the whole week. I am registered again for this year and I know which ball I am using!

    Two events come to mind:

    1) Senior State Am, 3 day (cut after 36 holes) medal play event at alternating golf courses

    2) Senior Club Championship at my home course, 2 day event of medal play

Of course for all of us Am's, the real "payday" is the daily, weekly, or seasonal money games with our pals and whomever we play with.  If you're looking to "show me the money" I think we can all agree that this is the major for CASH!!!

    Hi TT,

With the TOUR's Major season soon to be 2/3rds done, I'm interested to hear in how all of you have done in your Majors.

I've had a really fun golf season so far, and with 3 of my 4 gone, I'm feeling pretty good about the results.  In the Member Member 4 ball we got the ax (lost 2 and 1).  In the Woo we placed 3rd, and we had another 3rd place finish for the 3 Day Member Guest.  I guess a missed cut and 2 bronze medals aren't too bad.  Hopefully I can come thought in the club championship.

    How did you guys do?

  19. Team Titleist Staff

    Nice work, Hotsauce!

My majors are in full swing right now. I'm midway through our Blackstone Valley Challenge (the men's league from four courses in my area are battling it out for bragging rights) and I was able to help our team take top honors in the last event. I won the Net and Gross match in my group, and posted one of the lower Net scores for the team, so I was happy about that.

The MGA Amateur Pub Links Qualifier just passed and I played a really solid 16.5 holes. Too bad it was an 18-hole qualifier. Had one bad hole and struggled with the flat stick on another green. Take those out and I qualify. Instead, missed the cut by a couple of shots but I was pretty happy with the round overall.

Next up, match 3 out of 4 for the challenge and then our club championship is around the corner.

Feeling good about the game right now, just need to work on getting a little more consistent off the tee.

At a boy Mike D.  There's nothing better than winning the Net and Gross.  The pub links is no joke either.  I'm glad you had a decent showing, and I'm sure you'll get em next year.  Good luck in the 3 out of 4.

My major is the CT State Am qualifier. I signed up to play as a motivator for hard work an practice: now I have a reason to practice more often. I played a real solid 16.5 holes as well and just like Mike D however, I was playing in an 18 hole qualifier too. Just more motivation for next year!

We had the first City Major here in El Paso over Memorial Day and I finished 4th. Both days the front nine had my number. The first weekend of August is the City Championship which is held over 3 days and this year at two of my favorite courses in town. Then I defend in my flight at our Club Championship around Labor Day. We had a few others in between, but my sponsors fell through due to the lack of results. LMAO :). I hope everyone plays well in their tourney's and Team Titleist comes out on Top.

Great job everyone!!!  Enjoyed reading your results..

Wish i could say i played in some "majors" but i don't.  Hopefully soon...

Best of luck the rest of way guys!!!

  24. My "major" consists of a little two-on-two rivalry I enjoy with three golfing buddies.  We call it our "Chalice" match because the winners get to take home a traveling trophy, that is basically nothing more than a cheap plastic gold cup, but it represents so much more to those involved.

Teams are always the same and are very evenly matched.  We play it as a 2-man scramble in a match play format, and we also incorporate a little skins game.  Usually a few bucks change hands, nothing significant, with the bragging rights that come with packing the chalice home being the real prize.

In the most recent rematch my partner and I jumped out to a 2-up lead after 4 holes and thought we were cruising.  Then we pushed on the next several holes, and gave one away on #9, leaving us 1-up to start the back nine.  Both teams birdied 10 and 12, and we pushed on each hole through #15.  Our opponents birdied 16 to make it all square and give them all the momentum.

On 17 both teams made birdie, bringing us all square to the 18th hole, a dog leg left par-5 with OB on the left side.  Our opponents had a decent drive that left them in the rough.  I knew they had all the momentum so we wanted to avoid extra holes at all cost.  My partner hit a safe playable drive, so I let 'er rip and hit a pretty little draw that cut the corner a bit, leaving us 185 to the hole.  Our opponents hit their approach just short of the green, so I knew this was our chance.  5-iron don't fail me now.  Well, it didn't.  I put my Pro-V1 about 15 feet left of the hole.  Our opponents came valiantly close to chipping in for eagle, but had to settle for a conceded birdie.  Our eagle putt was a left to right downhiller that broke the whole way.  My partner had not made a putt all day, lipping out on several opportunities.  Well, he didn't lip this one out.  Dead-center.  Bottoms.  Eagle.  Victory.  Chalice.

Then we proceeded to put on our "Chalice Champs" tee shirts that we had printed up a couple weeks prior in anticipation of a possible victory, and wore these while enjoying a frosty beverage with our adversaries.

    Can't wait for the rematch.
