Yesterday, had an ok front 9.  Back 9 was better, first 8 holes (6 pars, 2 bogey).  Haven't shot in the 30s in a long time.  I get to the tee box, "Hey Chris know what you're shooting so far"?  Drive goes left in the deep rough, shanked my 3rd shot and then 3 putted....   Triple...

So I have to ask this...  I know it's not a rule in golf but if your playing partner is having a good round, isn't it common sense or courtesy NOT to say anything?

And here's the kicker, i'm hard of hearing and heard him LOUD AND CLEAR...

    Hey, Christopher,

Yes, it sucks.  But look at the bright side.  It will give you ammo to stick it to your "friend," next time out.  Whatever motivates you, is good.  Just think what the pros have to go through on tour.  Anyway, great round and keep working hard!  When you get to the point where nothing bothers you, that's when you've finally reached the place you need to be.  Good luck!

Plain and simple ...  you have to let them know that you are aware of how you are playing, then let them know that it can add extra pressure when other players bring it to your attention ... if that doesn't work, and you still play with them, it is perfectly legal to use ear plugs :)

In the games where everyone keeps a scorecard there's always a check at the turn- everyone knows what everyone shot for 9 holes. That's just how it has been normally in the games/groups I've been in. Recently, I was under my normal front in the thirties, as well, and the guys were referring to my 12 handicap. I just smiled and took it as a compliment- I haven't shot that in a long time. And then back to the same routine per shot on the back nine. I think by letting the information by me had me going back to my routine easily.

    Chris-

    Try this trick.

When keeping score I usually record the score for the hole.

I also record a dot for every shot over par and a minus for every shot under.

It makes me not think of the big picture...dots and minuses are less intimidating than an over under par score.

yea I've been in that same situation before but not from a playing partner but from my sky caddie .. i keep my score on it and it stares me down after every hole.

Thank you all for taking the time and providing me some great tips.  I will definitely keep them in mind the next time I'm going low :)..

    Thank you again!

We cut up a lot when we play, but we always keep track of how we all are playing, keeps our minds focused..

Over the years the one thing that used to bug me was when on the putting green someone will say "knock it in." Why this has to be said when one is putting is beyond me. Would one try to miss the hole on purpose ? My response to this stupid remark is " I absolutely attend to." Your situation is a common one and those that have played the game a long time know better than to say anything.

I too have a tendency to play much better when I do not know how well I am doing. I just remind myself that my friends are terrible at math and are probably wrong, so I don't believe them. (I know they're bad at math because my stroke count for them always tends to be higher than what they say...)
