I know this will cause a storm of “etiquette of the game” replies but if we hold true to the definition :
Definition: A "bunker" is a golf course hazard that is a hole or depression in the ground filled in with sand (or a similar material). Bunkers vary greatly in size and shape and depth. They are most commonly found serving as greenside hazards, but also often show up in fairways and alongside fairways
In the modern era we rake these to pristine condition why it’s a hazard and one should be penalized if one lands in them. How many times on the Tour telecast we see a Pro aim for the bunker vs a tight section of fairway near the green because he or she will have a better chance for an up and down . Does not make sense to me it’s a hazard and should at all cost be avoided. There is talk about the long putter ban , modifications to courses ( Old Course) to stay up to modern times and keep the score in check, like to see a tournament played with the bunkers un-raked and see how well they score or how one’s strategy changes.
I will continue to follow the protocol and rake the bunkers but feel it should be “play it as it lays”
IMHO
Thoughts ?
