I am currently serving in our USAF and I recently received a MFR stating that I will be able to play in the Open qualifiers without being charged leave. It is great to have the support of your employer!

For all of you out there who are military keep it up and don't be afraid to apply for your branch's sports teams.

If you have the handicap (1.4 or lower), you can register. At many locations, the USGA has problems with 'vanity caps' or folks that are probably 8 - 10's but carry a 1 to get into the tournament. If you shoot 8 - 10 over the rating (which for a 1.4 would be a VERY bad day), you'll get a letter from the USGA. The letter basically says you can't enter another USGA tournament until you send the USGA other tournament results that demonstrate your ability to play as a 1.4 HC.

So if you have a terrible day and shoot 85, you'll get the letter. If you truly carry a 1.4, then enter a couple of state tournaments (mid-am, am) and post some better scores, send the results into the USGA and you'll be able to play in USGA tourney's again. If you do enough searching on the web, I'm sure the actual text of the letter is posted.

Yes anyone with the appropriate handicap is qualified. I do know that if you shoot 8 strokes higher than the course rating they may consider no allowing you to proceed that year. That is put in place for locations in the past who very few play in the local qualifier. I haven't heard or read anything that said it would hurt you in future years. You can look through past years to see what scores are the average at your location.

I try play as mush competative golf as possible. I would recomend it to every golfer young or old who is trying to improve their game.

Is that true? I was under the impression that if you have the handicap, and play well enough in the qualifiers, you are in.
