I'm thinking about putting a large grip (Super Stroke) on my putter (Newport 2 mid slant)....I tried one of my golf partners putter one day (he has the Super Stroke 3.0 grip) and it felt great. Also tried some at my pro shop. I'm not having a lot of putting problems but it has always been the weakest part of my game. Any success stories out there?

Marvin - I have the GoLo S and put the Super Stroke 5.0 on it.  I have long fingers and was always "fidgeting" with my hands while putting.  The large grip provided a lightweight and stable base for my hands and now I can concentrate on other mechanics of my putting stroke.  After more than a year, I do believe the 5.0 is a bit too large and I am going to switch it out for the 3.0.  I'm no sniper on the green and I'll have a 3 putt every other round and most often have a tap-in for my second.  Nothing spectacular but very steady with the larger grip.

  3. If your are thinking about it then just do it.  It will cost you 25 bucks from most golf shops and that is with install. I have 3 putters that are in some kind of rotation and they all have the Mid Slim 2.0 on them.  I love the feel and how the grip sits in my hand.  I used to play the Winn midsize pistols but I believe this are better for me because of the non-taper design.  It allows for my hands to stay quite and really use my shoulders.  The final thing is that if your are confident in your putter/equipment, I believe you will make more putts.

I have been thinking about putting a Super Stroke on my putter as well. I have tried numerous putters with them installed and have really liked the feeling. For me it really does release pressure on my hands and gives me the ability to have a more pure putting stroke.

Have you seen the new Super Stroke Mid Slim 2.0? It is slightly smaller (1.20 inches diam.) vs. the Slim 3.0 (1.30 inches diam.). That size difference may not seem like much but it may help with making the overall transition to a larger grip. Also if you have slightly smaller hands the 2.0 would be a better choice. Something to think about.

I play the newport 2 also and swapped out the factory pistolini grip with the scotty cameron pistolero grip. It's a bit bigger (same grip as on the california series), but nowhere near the size of a super stroke.

I used to use a winn jumbo grip years ago on my old putter before I got my scotty. At first it felt good and I felt I was putting better, but the truth eventually came to the surface and I just needed to work on my putting! Overall, it was alright, but I love that pistolero grip.

IMO, the grip isn't going to improve your putting long term. I think so long as it feels comfortable that's the most important thing. Then again, sometimes trying something totally different is enough to get you excited to use and practice with your putter so for $20 or so, it's probably worth a shot.

I'd say, try practicing 4-6 footers religiously and get confident in that range. If you can get good at those, a lot of putting problems magically go away :)   ...but who am I to give anyone advice on their golf game! haha

    Good luck!

I had become very "handsy" with my putting stroke and replaced the Pistolero on my California Fastback with a Super Stroke last year.  I'd never tried a larger grip, but was so frustrated I figured I'd give it a try.  The concept works as advertised, and my stroke has become much more consistent.  Sure, I can still over release my hands if I don't concentrate, but I've become much better at hitting my lines and holing those putts from 6 feet and in.  And when you feel those are going to fall, it's easier to be a little more aggressive on those birdie putts.

For me, the Fatos Super Stroke grip helped my putting out amazingly.  It takes a lot to get use to the grip, but once it starts feeling comfortable I loved it.  I feel like i putt better, and more consistent.  Not as many pulls or pushes.  But thats just me, everyone is different!

If I can offer one piece of advice.  When you do decide to change to the large style putter grips, be aware of the fact that it will change the head weight of your current putter.  I changed to an oversized putter grip earlier this year and I had to add lead tape to the back of mine.  It did take some getting used too as well, but I do live the way it quieted my hands.

    Good luck in your decision.
