AS I have mentioned in previous posts, I am retired/disabled and subsequently bored. However I do get to spend lot of time at my local muni. Recently I got a part-time job there(free golf) and after a couple of months, I have observed several recurring themes on the first tee. 1) Majority of players (based on swing etc) play the wrong tees. 2)Alignment; players set-up aiming right, and if ball goes right, they're shocked. 3)Only a few go to the practice putting and chipping area prior to first tee. 4) Seldom see anyone stretching/loosening up, short of 2-3 "practice" swings. Just curious if this is indicative of most golfers or not. Ironically, some of the same players I observed come in complaining about how badly they played. Coincidence? Probably not! Enjoy the fall golf and beauty of golf courses this time of year!!!

Once upon a time I used to be guilty of #4.   Went from the trunk of my car to the first tee.  Now, I need an hour of warmups just to warn the bod for what's coming.  Enjoy the free golf, Dave!

Right on target on all points. Let's not forget the person who warms up on the range with a driver, as the only club they bring to the range to warm up with. I have said for quite some time now that golf courses should set up a "Boot Camp", if you will, for a day or two for beginning golfers. younger folks who have been in junior golf programs or people that have caddied, already know the proper way to navigate this game. Those that have not, need to learn for their enjoyment and as a courtesy to their fellow golfers. Frank P

Dave, I play a 9 hole course almost every day.  No range and no practice green.  I usually play #1 and #9 to get loosened up, then start my round.  Number 1 has OB along the right side tee to green with a barbed wire fence.  I'd guess that about 80% go OB on the first hole.  Most take a couple warm up swings then line up for center fairway and hit a slice right into the hay field.  Some will keep hitting till they get one in the fairway.  Then the green has water behind it if you go long.  Out of that 80% probably half will hit clear over the green.  What amazes me is that a lot of these players have slices, not fades, and this course is one where you'll spend most of the day in trouble hitting a slice, but most of these guy's don't get professional help to correct their slice or target far enough left to get in play.  I think that you have nailed it, most golfers play sloppy and then complain about their game.

When I was younger, that was me. Get off work, drive like a crazy man to the course and maybe get my shoes tied on the 2nd tee.   Nowadays, the warm-up is a must. Plus, my ball flight has always been pretty straight with a slight fade or draw depending on how I'm hitting it that day. I like to get an idea on the range ahead of time so I can go with whatever I have that day.  Feel of the practice green and hitting a few chips make those first couple of holes a little easier as well.
