I just spent the last 3 days listening and learning from some of the foremost experts in the field of Golf, Fitness and Biomechanics at the TPI World Golf Fitness Summit.  Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips put together an amazing lineup of speakers to share their knowledge with over 700 golf pros, fitness trainers, sports coaches and golf medical specialists.  The opening speaker, Dick Vermeil set the tone, talking about leadership, coaching and instruction.  He talked about caring, and building relationships with his players.  His theme was that the players didn't care how much he knew until they knew how much he cared.  It was inspiring listening to him.

There were over 40 speakers during the 3 days and the topics ranged from understanding how to access your capabilities in the face of fear, whether its the fear of missing a putt or fear of playing poorly, to how to train juniors and girls, injury assessment and pain management, 3D analysis, nutrition and developing power or hitting it 30 yards further. They talked about ground reaction force and how stabilizing your feet could help you gain distance, to how to build your business model. A mind boggling amount of information was shared with the attendees.

One of the common threads that ran through many of the speakers talks was that you could not be a successful coach, teacher, trainer or leader if you didn't care about the person you were helping.  And that you also needed to build a team with a golf pro fitness trainer and medical Dr. to work together because one person cannot be an expert in all fields.

If you are working with a golf pro or a fitness trainer or a medical Dr. and you golf, you should ask them if they are TPI certified. It is knowledge that will help them to help you.

Getting ready for the start of the first morning.                   Robert Yang, Jason Zuback, Al Vermeil

Brad talking about how to successfully coach a player       Tom Pernice and James Sieckmann talking about wedge shots

  2. Cathi,

Thanks for sharing. That must have been a great experience. Very inspiring. Nice to hear that you enjoyed your time there.

  3. Cathi, great comments!  When I was out your way last week people were talking about this and Dave was excited about it.  That being said, is this something a person could pay to attend for future conferences? I think the material sounds excellent for anyone serious about their golf game.

    Thanks!

Hi Chris,  Every two years, they hold the world summit (usually alternating coasts) for anyone certified as a TPI instructor,  To take the certification, you have to be a golf pro, or a fitness trainer, or a medical doctor (physical therapist, Dr, chiropractor, etc).

There are certified pros that come from all over the world to attend this seminar.  We had speakers from England, Austria, Australia and the world.. I met a Dr.from the Netherlands, a golf pro from Malaysia and a fitness pro from Dubai - all were there to learn more so that they could take the information back to their countries.

Sounds like a wonderful conference full of valuable information and tips. Any chance TPI.COM may make some video of this conference available ? Also is there anywhere to get regional list of TPI Certified instructors ? Thank you Cathi for giving us a look at what went on.

You can find a list of certified instructors in your area by going to http://www.mytpi.com/experts and putting in your zip code and it will pop up with the certified experts as well as what level they are and what they specialize in.  You can click on them for more information and contact into.  The higher the level of certification (Level I, II, III), the more knowledgeable in that discipline.  Also, each pro, or fitness instructor or medical person should have a team that they work with so that your workouts and instruction are integrated.

Definitely learned a lot and am ready to put some new drills into play.  The talk on confdence and the way our mind works was very interesting.  Basically, under pressure, we need to be able to access the capabilities that we have in us to perform our very best.   Fear of failure, fear of looking bad, often keep us from accessing our abilities under pressure.  One of the ways to handle that is to realize that every moment in time is a moment - whether you are risking your life or making a putt or reading a blog.  It is one moment, no more and no less.  When each moment becomes equally valuable, it opens up your mind to all the possibilities.

I did talk to them about videos and they have already posted several clips on twitter at:

    Hi Cathi,

WOW! What a lot of info to take in it sounds like, but it sounds very beneficial all around/not just for our golf lives! I know I struggle with the self punishment on a missed putt for birdie or par or the " did I really just hit that wedge over there" shot!  Thanks too for posting the link to the videos.

    Cathi,

I could not agree more with your take on the importance / impact of confidence in the golf swing. It is one of the key things I have been working on for most of the year. I think once you get to the mid-high single digit handicap you know the mechanics to hit all of the shots to play great golf...it is just a matter of having the confidence to hit them. Confidence also comes into play when you hit those shots and they don't go according to plan (over draw / cut, etc) that you can get up and down.

I look forward to seeing some of the stuff that comes up on TPI.

    Thanks,

    Will
