Cooler temps are arriving. Where do you draw the line when rain, cold temps, wind chill and wind make golf miserable ? For me I do not enjoy playing when the wind chill is below 50. I will play when it is just a light drizzle and the forecast calls for it to stop before the round ends or it starts in the middle of the round but moderate rain, forgetaboutit. I also do not like to play when you have a three club wind or higher and that will be the forecast for the whole day.

    Hi Carl,

    Good question!

Despite the fact I was raised in Buffalo, NY, I will not play if the temp is in the 40's. If it is raining or drizzling the temp has to be in the high 50's. I personally love playing in very hot weather. The back is loose, the ball is flying and hopefully the low scores follow!

I'm interested to hear what everyone else's cut-off is.

The group I play golf with, we are a little crazy and obsessed with golf but our rule is if the golf course is open we play. We have cart covers and I also have a heater that I will put in the cart so I can say we have played in all weather conditions the coldest I can remember is about 25 deg. We have palyed with snow on the ground and also played in wet rainy and really hot conditions also. So to sum it up we play as long as there is a course that is open lol.

If the course is open, I'll play.  I've had to wait for frost to melt off the greens, so the temp was in the mid-30s when I started. I don't mind the cold.

I've played in some very rainy conditions too, but not when it's freezing outside.

I agree if it is open I am playing. I don't like it if the temps are in the 40's and the wind is blowing over 20 mph and there is moderate rain that is steady.

It takes a lot of perseverance to play in that kind of weather. They will not let us start playing till the temp. is above 36 degrees. The greens here are in real good shape.

Rochester NY here, and although I love to play in warmer weather, as you know Bubba if we start in April typically the weather is not quite there yet.  So I've become quite accustomed to playing in cooler weather.  Its the cold raining day that I will have my cut off line. And of course a good Lake Effect Snow fall would be that cut off as well. Temps in the 50"s and sunny...play on

My limit is below freezing temperatures or snow.  Once it gets below freezing it hurts to hit the ball and I switch over to ski season until the Masters.

...wimps. I have a time on Sunday forecast for 37 going to mid-40's by the end of the round. Wind chill below 50 in Wisconsin cuts the 7 month season down to about 5. Temps below 50 would give back a week or 2. One local course will only close if the greens are snow-covered and open when they aren't. Takes the water hazards out of play once they freeze over. Do suggest dropping on ground after retrieving. To be honest, 38 and/or a wind chill below 34 are my limits. Too many layers at that point.

Will start in the high 30's but not without a pretty good indication that it will get above 40 within the first few holes of the round.  Living in NE Ohio, we can usually play into November most years and occasionally, sneak in one weekend in December.  Mittens and stocking caps are pretty standard.  Our group does not play in the rain, even when warm.  A small shower during the round is OK, but we do not tee off in the rain.

  14. Jim A

I will play if the course is open.  I have played in the low 30's and that's about the extent of it.  My course will close sometime in November.  Good luck to all and enjoy the holidays.

Bubba - If 36 was an occasional event - and in WI in January it WILL be, then I'd skip playing myself. This Sunday may well be the last day to play. Our basic rule is if the tee breaks in frozen ground, it is too cold. Regardless of air temp.
  16. It's funny seeing this post as my playing partners and I were recently discussing this... we've been playing together since college and as we get older, the threshold also goes up. These days, we won't play if it's below 45. Yeah, we're big babies. Great question!

Wow some of you guys are either brave, diehards, crazy or D all of the above. Don O you're a better, or more dedicated than I. 40's with sun and no wind, I'll go. But generally if I can put on some Under Armor type top base, with a long sleeve shirt over that, and a light sweater with a vest, so I can still swing without restriction, it's off to the course. Add wind, clouds, any mist or drizzle, and we'll head to the lounge and the Golf Channel. But we have some "Wisconsin Don's" too, who won't miss a day that the club will let them out. Fall golf is the best golf, EXCEPT for what follows too soon thereafter. Especially in the Northeast. Stay warm all

Here in New England when it is 35-40ish degrees out on or near Cape Cod, I am looking to tee it up. I will rarely play in rain, drizzle or even a threat. Windy weather is not so bad but if I can't stand still without tipping over then its a go! I try to play year round in Mass but when we get snow then that is when I hit the ranges with heated bays. I just need to golf or I can't breath. Anyone feel like this?

Rules of golf here apply the same as driving the convertible:

If I can drive to the course with the top down, I'll play. 0 or 100 degrees, if they are booking tee times, I'm in.

If I can't, I drive the other car. 50 degrees or warmer, I'll book a time if available. If I can't I hit the range.

Year round at the range regardless, I got beanies, cold weather gloves, and base layers. Golf is too much fun to take a break from...

Here in N Texas, many days, the wind blows the ball off our slick winter greens and I don't care what the weather man thinks, that makes 50 degrees feel like 20. Our local NBC station has a weather girl that moved here from upstate NY - Albany or Syracuse or wherever. Her first winter in Fort Worth was about 4, maybe 5 years ago and she quoted herself during one weather cast saying "I am from upstate NY and I have never been so cold in all my life ...". Bottom line is - when it is to cold to have fun, it's too cold to have fun. I turned 73 last December and I play every chance I get - never know when I won't wake up again!

Living in North Carolina gives us the opportunity to play in the coldest months.  We have temps in the 50's quite often.  As a general rule, we don't normally play under 50 degrees unless it is sunny with no wind.  Although we did play the day after Christmas around 8:00 am with the temp around 38 but warmed to the upper 40's by the 8th hole.

  25. I agree, too tough of conditions does not make for as much fun...personally above 50 is needed unless it is very sunny.  No rain or wind below 50 and sometimes 60 though...

Don't have a specific temperature cutoff, just dress for it and hope to be able to strip off layers as the day goes on.  Today, the temp was right about 40 when we teed off at 0630; wearing shirt, sweater, sweatshirt, and rain jacket to begin.  Down to just the shirt and sweater by the end of the round.

If it's raining and there is no break in the rain showing on the radar, we normally do not play.  Don't have to worry much about snow here in the Houston area, but we do have occasional frost delays.  The worst days are those with temps in the thirties or low forties and winds between 15 and 25 mph.  Those become grin and bear it days.  If I can swing, I'll play.  Cart covers and heaters are nice to have when someone I'm playing with has one, but don't have my own.

Played with my late brother in a tournament in Williamsburg, VA the first weekend in Jan for eight years.  Conditions varied from downright cold and nasty to low 70's.  We even had one snow delay of about two hours.  Great fun overall, though.

Bubba, I questioned that myself yesterday morning in North Alabama, low to mid 30's, 20 MPH north winds, 4 layers of clothes. Probably the worst game ever but this was a company sponsored scramble and hopes of 1 good hit out of the 4 players. I hope to never to play in that cold again, but I am a golfer and will never remember how bad if was the next time this happens.

Well I live in KY, and I have played every single month for 3 years staright. Heavy rain below 37* is the cut off but if no rain or drizzle we're good. I have played into the twenties. We are die hards. We have a lake on hole nine 245 to carry and on extended cold days even the short knockers get it across LOL just hit a low stinger it'll skip forever on ice. We played a 2-man scramble three weeks ago 36* 20-25 MPH winds out of the north had seven teams, two teams were -7 last place was even. Loved the chili dinner that followed.

It depends on the time of the year. I live in Chicago and in the spring I will play in the mid 40s.  In the fall I will play only if it is in the 50s. Being cooped up all winter is a contributing factor to my tolerance to the cold.

  31. Justin S.

    Justin S.

I tend to draw the line around 50 degrees. I live in Kansas where the wind is usually blowing so wind chill is usually a factor.

I tend to play better in the fall and winter because I don't go for every green in 2. I take my medicine and layup for my par (or bogey in some cases). The greens are less receptive so a higher lofted club is the key. Hopefully one of these days I can take a trip to warmer weather and play some real golf in the winter.

I have played in temps as low as 20 degrees and as high as 115.

For me there are a variety of courses to choose from in my area, so I will migrate around depending upon the weather. If its too cold,I'll head inland, windy then I'll go to somewhere tree lined, hot then I'll head to the coast, in heavy rain I'll go south. I check the weather regularly to plan for the best option for the weekends.

2 cut off line for me:  down pouring where the course gets shut down or snowing..

A TT member and a good friend Josh G. aka Hotsauce said it best "Make everyday playable".   I've played in rain, temps being in the mid 30's, winds up to 30 mph, if not more...  Why??  B/c i only get to play once a week if that so whenever i get a chance to play i'm out there..  And living in New England our golf season is short and goes by so damn fast..   Besides, it feels good just to be out there and swinging the club...

And how do i survive those conditions?  Meet my friend FJ..  the best there is...  no matter what the conditions are, FJ has me covered...

My cold weather golf limit is 40 with lots of sun and no wind.  Walking in weather like that is great, but you need to stretch and warm-up correctly.  When it gets below 40 and stays there, I'm done for the season.  As for rain, it really depends on the temp and the wind.  I was finishing a round with friends yesterday afternoon when it started to rain lightly, temp was in the mid 50s but there was no wind so it wasn't to bad.  If the wind had been up or if the temp had been lower than 50 it would have been a different story.

Tell em Chris!! Make everyday playable.

There really isn't a cut line for me.  Being from the mountains of Colorado our golf season was really short, and sometimes, we got snow (more like dip n dots) in July.  If you want to get more than 10 rounds in, you better own a jacket and hat.

If it's not down pouring and there's no snow on the ground, I'll play.

Now that I live in MA, the season is a tad longer, but the rules are still the same.  If the course is open and I've got the time, I'll play.

A couple of winters ago we saw no snowfall and I played all winter long.  One day the pin was literally frozen in the ground.  You couldn't put a tee in, but you could hit a 4 iron about 300 yards if you hit it straight.

Here's one of my favorite shots from a crisp morning.

Last year we played in a tournament called the Santa Scramble.  It's in mid December and each person gets to pick 4 clubs.  We rock holiday music, and everyone dresses up.  One of the best events of the year.

If you're not playing Winter golf, you're missing out!

If it's windy and rainy, air temps can't be too far below 55. If it's just windy, but dry, air temp can be too far below 40. If it's just flat out cold without being excessively windy, I can play if its 35 or higher...just don't expect me to put up a good score as Messer's Walker, Jameson, or Daniels may be utilized as booster fuel in my coffee at the start and turn to keep me warmed up.

As far as a wind chill below 50 or even a 3 club wind, living in NE South Dakota, that happens often during the golf season.

For me it is a matter of frost.  I prefer to golf early morning and if there is frost I can't play for fear of causing damage to the course grasses.  I will play until the flags are no longer in place ... I might go out and hit a ball short of the greens if it isn't too cold, but I usually call it a season once the flags are removed.

I am hoping to play Sat and Sun this weekend and maybe Monday, after that it's up to Super.

although I prefer to play when its above 70 , I will still go when the temperature is in the 30's.  Here in MA  once the snow comes it usually doesn't leave us until spring.  Hitting balls at a driving range is fine for trying to keep your swing intact through the winter but its just not the same as playing a round of golf.   Last year I played midway thru december.  I was one of 9 people on the course.  I finished 18 in just over 3 hours which was heaven.  In the summer months it averages 5-5 1/2.   WHILE WE'RE YOUNG !

the greens were rock hard, the ball wasn't flying very far, and several times I had to clear a patch of snow in the fairway to be able to hit off of solid ground.  But I was so happy to be playing.  If you aren't willing to brave the elements in some of the bad weather areas then golf season is just too short.  I try to make it interesting by hitting different shots.  With the ground frozen you need to pretend its hardpan,  Hit lower running shots like links golf…  Its never bad if I'm able to play.

     Hey Carl,

Heavy downpours/sleet = no golf for me! Light rain/ temps mid 40s and up, am right out there if the schedule permits. Too cold out and dressing up like the Michelin Man or his wife, really impacts the swing for sure! Being in New England with our shortish season, you learn to layer up and out Ya go!

    Great topic for discussion!

Avoid the West coast of Ireland during the month of April. I was there in 2012 at that time and experienced 11 days of rain and 30 mph winds. They told us at Old Head (the first course we played) the week before, the wind snapped a flag pole in half. I forgot to ask if the pole was wooden or metal, but who cares? That is strong wind. Over the course of the golf trip I noticed that even when the sun came out, it was still raining!! We had rain gear, and after the first storm came rushing in on the Old Head peninsula, we put it on and kept it on. It helped, and we played every day I was there. The thing is, you get used to it, and try crafting shots that cheat the wind. I had 4 pairs of rain gloves and used every pair every day with new Golf Pride water resistent grips. Every venue we played at had "drying rooms" adjacent to the locker rooms. We just put our wet gear in there after every round while we ate lunch/dinner. While out on the course I kept telling myself that this is the way golf was meant to be played despite the awkward feeling of being on the side of some huge dune, and my ball in a laughable lie. After that experience, wind and rain over here, doesn't bother me as much. Note; it still bothers me, just not as much.

About 45 is my cutoff temperature.  Below 45 and I'll make the drive to an indoor range or a heated outdoor range just to swing a club.  Do not start rounds in rain but often get caught on the course and always carry rain gear and keep going.  So far as wind goes, I'll usually play my morning 9 normally in a dead calm, usually in thick fog.  The afternoon 9 is usually in gusty wind.

For me it is a factor of more than just temperature, precipitation is probably the greatest factor when deciding to play or not to play. I can play well into the 30's but I really prefer not to play in rain, sleet, snow, etc (even though I will do it). Everybody is different so I think it is what works best for you. I know guys who are all over the place when it comes to this. For example, just in my Saturday group, one of the guys will not play if the temperature is 50 degrees or below with really no exceptions. In our same Saturday group, one of the others who is the oldest at 71 and was a Marine fighter pilot (pointing this out because he is hard as nails). When I call him early in a Saturday in the winter to see if he still wants to play, I have received comments like "of course I want to play, it is only sleeting lightly and should stop soon ." Bottom line, I can usually be pulled into playing as long as I can find some willing partners!w

For me the wind is the deciding factor.  I've been very comfortable playing in the 30's and freezing playing in the 50's.  Additionally, today's cold weather clothing layering systems makes staying outside for extended periods doable.  Many years ago, one would have to put on so many layers of clothing, swinging a golf club was akin to chopping wood.  However, today's technology allows the modern golfer to swing the club somewhat the same as in warmer weather.  It may not be as much fun as warm weather golf but it's manageable depending on one's limits.  Nice question Carl.

I will play thru 35, without rain. Gore-Tex is the savior. With 2 layers, and wind sweater, or DryJoy Gore-Tex 3/4 zip, "long johns" with wind pants... that's all you need! Also a cap and WinterSoft gloves are a must! Wore my new black DNA's on Saturday at Sand Creek CC where we had 25 mph winds blowing off Lake Michigan! If you walk you will generate some body heat & loosen up as well!

I've played as low as the high 30s with a windchill in the 20s.  It was pretty brutal.  It was a charity event and my son (age 5 at the time) also played.  Neither of us complained.

If you have an FJ performance lined sweater and are outside of the arctic circle, everyday is playable.  I also wear the FJ raingrip gloves when it's really cold to keep the hands somewhat warmer.  Down here in Atlanta, any colder than that, they close the courses to save the grass, which I won't argue with.

I can remember as a kid playing with my Dad in temps so low I shattered a 2 piece golf ball.  We even made rules for what to do when a shot ended up in the snow.  For me, I look at all of the conditions together before deciding.  You can always dress for the weather and FootJoy does a great job of "making every day playable."  But with that said, some times it's just not fun.  If it's in the high 30s or low 40s and a light rain, I'm staying inside complaining about the weather.

I will not play below 40 deg or if the windchill makes it feel like the 30's.  We get to play plenty of golf throughout the year and I am in no rush to be chilled to the bone.  I have all of the FJ layers and sweaters, but it just is not fun in freezing weather.

I will always play in the heat.  Like Bubba said, it gets the back loose and the ball flying.

I used to say I"d play as along as temp was between my age and avg score. Unfortunately seems like that window is closing, due to age mostly. I factor cloud coverage also. A sunny 45 feels much better than a cloudy 50. Cold weather and fall brings lot of leaves and pine straw on the ground, makes even more of a premium to stay in the short stuff! Layer up and play on!

I fall into the "if the course is open, I'll play" category.  But if it's rainy/drizzly and in the 30's, I'll pass.  I can deal with wind and cold, but wet and cold, no thanks.  It's been a while since I've played in sub-30 temps, so I'd say the freezing mark is my line.

Living in No CA, I play mostly nice weather, 70's and above, but I travel and will play in light rain and chill. I've played in the snow and extreme rain and wind but mainly for premier courses (i.e. Pacific Dunes or Old Greenwood in Truckee). I have become spoiled playing in CA.

Here in N Texas, we get it all so I have one simple rule, Carl. I call it my no twosomes allowed. Low 40's OK, wind OK, a little rain OK - but NO TWO COMBINED!

Neldon, I like your answer. Here in Arkansas we get your Texas weather about one day later. Since we can play just about every month of the year I'm just not as excited to get those birdies on days when golf is miserable as when I was younger.

As long as the course is open I will play down the freezing mark given their is no gusting wind.[ Back up clubs only though]

Here in CT we usually are relegated to the indoor facility for at least 2 months of the year.

Layer up in FJ gear and something to cover my ears and I am game for 9 holes minimum, play does speed up that's for sure.

I live in Savannah so we don't miss too many days due to weather. If we do it is rain more so than cold. It can get pretty windy and if you add rain to that it's time to stop.

    Hi Carl!

I will play any pretty much any temperature. A group of friends and I always play in a tournament called the Frozen Open every year on January 1st. I live in the midwest where the winters can but brutal and the winds can get pretty high. It's been pretty cold as you can imagine.

I'm with you on the rain though, anything over a light drizzle and I'm out. I find it too hard to maintain grip on my club and I feel it does more harm to my golf game than help.

    Great question!

I would have to say that any play for me at temps below 45 deg F. is simply for the maintenance of my golf game. No improvement sought. Just trying to keep it going over the winter so that I'm prepared for the spring.

Your post rings a bell with me as I have the same thoughts. I wonder though when it is cold enough where you are wearing layers and a wind jacket and let's admit it we are still cold, that we feel that our golf swing is restricted with the extra clothes when we usually play in shorts and a short sleeve golf shirt in prime golf season weather, we let our bodies get used to the restricted swing until it starts feeling normal and then when short sleeve weather returns we start to struggle again on getting back to our warm weather swings. Hmmmmm. Makes you wonder if you just stayed in touch with the game by watching golf videos, live broadcasts and making golf swings inside your home at an imaginary ball or even hit those whiffle golf balls. Just thinking out loud.

Chris H. - if I were to wait for the spring thaw, might not be able to remember where the golf course is. If the greens ain't frozen, and it ain't rainin', and the wind ain't above 30 MPH, in Texas, you gotta get your butt on the course!

If the course is open I am there to play. This past weekend I walked 18 and it was 35* with 20 mph wind with gusts even higher. Putting was rough as my hands were extremely cold. won 20$ in the match play bet. So it was worth it. I walk 95% of my rounds so I can always stay warm.

I don't mind playing in cold weather as long there are no high winds.

A 55-60* temp is my limit

Oh yeah, good thoughs Carl.  I think that the swing that "feels" restricted is prevelent among golfers in layers of clothing.  I actually wonder if I got a videotape of my "resticted swing" I wonder if the restriction is really apparent when compared to my (shoulder turn/ extenstion through the ball of my) normal swing.  However, to Neldon I completely agree I'll take some of that motivation and GET MY BUTT OUT THERE!  Just think who wouldnt want to get 100 yards of roll on a 5 iron!?
