  1. I need some advice or help. The club that I am a member at is a small town country club. Just like any other club there is clicks and soap opera's and all kinds of stupid stuff. I am typically the kind of person that tries to "do the right thing." Well I don't know what the right thing is? Our club is losing money. We typically make it every year by some member helping us out. The Trustees and the Board Members are really a joke. They have a person that is running the club that is over paid(salary) and in a normal person's opinion barely does any work as it is. Almost every month there is money that is missing but no one ever looks into it. I have a friend that is a new board member and he is basically getting the cold shoulder when it is brought up to anyone of any power. On a month like June this year when we were barely open because of rain, our payroll expense was the same as last June when we were busy. There is no business plan in place. Last year we lost $26000. I am really thinking that it would be a losing battle to try and go up against the few families that are really running this place. Should I stay, should I go. I really and torn because this is my home town country club. Does anyone out there have any insight for me???
  2. David C, If you love your club like I love mine, leaving would be next to impossible. To me you have two choices (1) stay on board till the "ship goes down" (2) get on the Board and fix the "ship" from within. Hope this helps and good luck. steve b

I always viewed the Board Members as trusted servants, to represent the membership. It might be time to rally & vote in some new Board Members.

As a professional that has been in the situation that you are describing it is a tough choice. I would offer my services as and unemployed PGA member to come and help fix the situation. There are a few ways of looking at this. 1st if you and those that truly care about the club walk away things will never change and the club will probably fail and become public of at worse have to close its doors. I understand that you and other do not want to see that happen. 2nd the board of directors reports to the membership and if you are in the position of losing money and as you said lost most of the month of june to weather and had the same payroll as a busy june then someone must answer for that. Your general manager and or head golf professional are not doing their jobs if this happens. 3rd. Changes must be made you and your friend should encourage many others who think like you to join the board and make those changes as you can. It will take some time but you must act. Please contact me as I know that I can help.

If you suspect embezzlement you have three choices in my opinion. Do nothing and let the club die. Hire a Private Investigator to conduct a surveillance on the person you suspect is embezzling or hire an independent bookkeeper to conduct an audit. Be prepared to file charges if its embezzlement. That's the only chance you have of getting any money back. Good luck

Present your ideas to those that you trust but don't hang around too long.  Some clubs' members will drag you in the mud if the club is doing poorly.  There are clubs that value you, so support the ones that do instead of fighting the ones that do not represent you or have your best interests in mind.

David sounds like a pretty intense issue you got going on there. My adivse would be gather a panel of trusted memebrs that are on the board or not and bring everyone together for a country club meeting. Talk about the problems that are occuring at the course and what can be done to reselove the issues. I got it is a family run club, but if topics are brought up in a discussion forum of adavid memebrs maybe they will litsten to the people and a make a change for the better, good luck.
