Hi TT, Well it's finally happened. After a seemingly endless struggle I've finally become a homeowner. While I'm sure this new chapter in life will cut down on some of my golf time, I am looking forward to installing a backyard putting green. I've got a small yard .33 acres, that's going to be a great spot to roll some putts and hit some little pitch shots. I don't want anything huge (we'll I do, but the wife doesn't), maybe 15x10 feet or so. I'm definitely going with synthetic, because I don't want to deal with the constant upkeep, chemicals, and maintenance a "real" putting green requires. My question is, does anyone here have a backyard green? I've seen some DIY ideas and looked into some companies, but I'd love to see what the team here has going on. Thanks for sharing!

I just got new turf put on mine!(8 years old, needed to be redone) I had a local company install mine. Keeping debris off of it and not to much direct sun is the key for it to be long lasting. We have a tree right by ours to keep the sun off. It is easy to make them roll too fast (especially for smaller greens) so when you have one put in, make sure it is the speed you like. For aesthetics and for little chips I have a fringe around it. I will post a picture tomorrow.

I had one growing up. I lived next to a golf course so the mowers were easily accessible. My problem was the upkeep with chemicals. I never was able to truly use it as a putting green, but focused more on chipping. I think synthetic is the way to go. Plus, with synthetic you can more easily control the speed of the green and probably set the speed similar to your home course so you're able to read speed a little better.
  5. I have an indoor putting green and I used the same materials as some other Scotty Cameron Collectors that have outside putting greens. In all cases these are artificial, I have not heard of anyone using natural products.

All i have is a net but after a few strokes and ripping up the grass, i bought a mat that i can use outside and inside (my garage of course)...

Would love to have a putting green outside but lost that battle a long time ago with the wife...

Congrats on the new crib bud!

Birdie ball makes a great synthetic putting green very real like conditions that can be made to any size. Then you just have to worry about the framing.

Josh, I just want to congratulate you on the new home. I still remember our first home my wife and I moved into many years ago- we were so happy and the memories seems to last forever. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find a good putting/chipping green. I've always dreamed of it, too.

    Cheers!

    Hi Josh,
I put a putting green in abut 5 years ago when we renovated our backyard. The area that I put in, beside the house, is approx 8 ft wide by about 21 ft long. There was enough room to put 2 holes about 17 ft apart, and off setting the lineup of the flags. Also wanted some rough, surrounding the perimeter to practice close distance chipping. I also have extra turf to place farther back to practice longer chips and pitching. Over time, with ground shifting, you get some undulations from year to year. Not sure of your set up or what will be surrounding the area, but what I didn't realize is that even though it is maintenance free, it isn't. Lots of leaves, twigs, etc from surrounding trees sooner or later end up on the green. I bought a small cordless blower to clean is off usually about once a week. Sometimes, I actually use my shop vac to pick up the smaller pcs. that are too stubborn to be blown away. In the winter, since I am in Canada, I tarp it over just so there is that much less to clean up in the spring. If you have the space and the $'s, it is allot of fun., and has definitely helped my short game and putting!

Congrats on the new home and considering a putting green. We installed one a year ago and it is amazing. It is 400 sq/ft and has 5 holes. I asked our installer to put in all types of breaking putts, L to R, R to L, and straight. I find myself heading out there more often than not to get some practice in. Our installer also gave us some 5x5' remnants which are used for chipping from across the yard (flop shots). The best thing about the green is my short game is becoming much more reliable on the real course. You should definitely get it, you won't be disappointed.

Wow thanks for the inspiration guys! I have a birdie ball for inside, but I can't wait to have something outside. Keep the suggestions coming, and I'll update everyone on my progress.
    Thanks again

Good looking greens guys! I am definitely envious. I have been toying with the idea myself for the last year or so. My backyard is roughly an acre in size so I have plenty of space to work with. I would love to have an artificial green that I could hit 30-40 yard pitch shots to. My question to those that have these greens already is, do you think the artificial green will hold the ball with pitch shots from that distance?
