Hey everybody! Just wondering what everyone's warm up routine is. My local course doesn't have a driving range or net so I usually spend the first four or five holes warming up. Another local course does have a range, but I find I don't take many swings before the round just out of habit. When warming up on a range, how much time do you normally spend before your round, or how many swings do you normally take? Also, if anybody plays at a course without a range, what's your warm up routine? Thanks!!

  2. I don't normally hit the driving range before a round. I do always spend 10-15 minutes putting. Nothing worse than 3 putting the first hole because you had no idea how fast or slow the greens were going to be. Usually just take a few extra practice swings on the first tee until I feel loose.

I usually get to the course about 75 minutes before tee time. I'll hit the range. First I stretch. I start with my 6 and hit 10 balls feet together no higher than my hips. 10 balls feet apart no higher than my hips. 10 balls 3/4 swing. 10 balls full swing. Then I'll hit about 5 balls with driver, pitch, 3w, 8i & a hybrid. I'll finish off the bucket with my SW & LW hitting various types of shots. Then I head to the putting green and spend about 15-20 minutes. 3 balls at 3ft, 9ft, 15ft & 21ft. I don't go for the hole specifically. I look for the flattest area and putt for speed, once I get all three balls within a foot and or in the hole I move to the next distance.

I'm a huge fan of DJ's warm-up routine. I just wish he were a Titleist guy! He does some great stretches. Here is a video:

    www.youtube.com/watch

He also has a great warm-up routine:
    12 60* wedges
    26 SW
    13 PW
    12 8i
    33 4i
    4 FW
    11 D
    13 6i

    Then to the chipping are:
    27 PW chips
    6 pitches from rough
    Putts:
    2 from 25'
    12 from 5'
    Then straight to the tee!

Sometimes I like warming up that much, and sometimes it works better for me to just hit until I have 3 good shots in a row for each of the clubs I warm up with (usually GW, 8i, 5i, 4i, Driver), then a bunch of lobs 7 chips on the green, and then putts.

If no range, then I like to use my Orange Whip to get warm and then take some hard swings to get a litle more warm.

At the start of the season I put my driver behind my waist with my arms hanging down holding the club and turn back and forth several times to loosen my back. I then take several slower practice swings and step up the tempo gradually faster and faster then go to the tee. Being towards the end of the season, I take 6 putts on the practice green. Then I go over to the 1st tee and take a few practice swings with the driver and hit the ball.

I usually swing a 5 iron like a baseball bat 30 times to get my torso loosen up, nothing hard just smooth relaxing swings. I'll then throw down 3 balls in the rough & chip for a little bit. I don't hit the range for the reason of seeing something good and getting excited or seeing something bad and be in mind scramble mode on the first tee.
I then do some arm & leg stretches to get my quads & hamstrings loose as well as the rest of my body then go and play......

Just revamped routine. Hit 5 iron to get little loose and then work through bag with three balls each, starting with wedges and finishing with driver (or whatever club I'm going to use on hole #1).

I like to show up about an hour before my tee time. I typically start with some putting with alignment and then progress into some lag putts (20 min). After that, I'll do a little chipping and pitching (15 min). Then I'll hit the range to hit a small bucket of balls, working from wedges to driver. Depending on the course, I like to save my final 3 range balls to practice my opening tee shot and routine. Then I'll grab a drink and head to the first tee. I've found that practicing my opening tee shot and routine out at the range before hand relieves any first tee jitters.

To be truly ready to play I arrive 1:15 before tee time. 25 minutes chipping then pitching. Then, to driving range to hit wedges off-speed then full swing. Hit a mid iron the same as wedges and then a long iron. From there it's hybrid, fairway, and driver to see what ya got. After that, 15 minutes putting to get a speed and it's off to the first tee.

I try to hit only 10-15 full shots before my round. I start by chipping 5 or 10 shots to a few closer targets, then another 5 or 10 partial wedge pitches to various targets. This all helps to find my rhythm. Then I hit a few full wedges, some 8 or 9 irons to a pin/target, and if all feels right, I jump to driver and make sure I have my rhythm and tempo connected. No more than 5 or 6 drives. Then head to the first tee. I always do my practice putting before going to the range. I want to have the driver be the last thing I hit, before heading to the first tee to hit driver, so the rhythm and tempo I found on the range feels fresh when I step on the first tee.

I like to start about an hour before tee time. I used to stretch a lot, as I am pretty flexible, but lately, I have pulled something at the top of my left thigh. Now I just take out my SwingFlex (Orange whip) and swing several times with this. I hit the range and start with the shorter irons first. I'll just hit a few gap wedges (3-6) to get warmed up, then hit a few more aiming at about a 120yd target. Then I'll progress up with a few(5-10) 8 irons, then some 5 or 6 irons, maybe even a couple of 3 irons. Then I'll hit 5-10 drivers, and finish up with a few 54 deg and 58 degree wedges. Then hit a few putts at varying lengths to get the feel for speed. If you are playing at a course that is new to you, if the greens are faster, then practice only downhill breaking putts. If the greens are slower, practice only uphill putts. This will get you acclimated to the new greens faster. I try to time this so that I am still warmed up from the range when hitting the first tee. I hate going this routine, then somehow being delayed 20 minutes. Just feels like I am cold and stiff again on the first tee.

If you don't have a range, I would recommend swinging the SwingFlex (Orange Whip), or at least some type of swing weight several times to get warmed up. Maybe several chips around the practice green as far back as you can get.

I try to get to the course at least an hour before my tee time to warm up. I like to start with chipping. I find it helps me dial in my timing and slowly begins to warm up the ole muscles. I'll hit the range next. I have an orange whip. I like to swing it a few times to help loosen the joints and muscles. I start at the wedges and work my way up to the driver. I try to reserve at least 10 minutes to putt before teeing off.

I do some stretches before heading to the course, takes about fifteen minutes.

During the summer while in Ohio I play a 9 holer with no range and no practice green. So I'll swing the driver a few times, tee one up and play #1 and #9 as a warmup, then start the game on #1.

When I'm down south for the winter I play at a course with an excellent practice facility. I get a small bucket, hit two 5 irons, two 7 irons, two 9 irons, and about six hits with the driver. Then putt for about five minutes before heading out to the course.

These two methods work equally well for me.

20 minute at practice green followed by 20 more at the range. I work from the sand wedge up, skipping every other iron along the way. Each round I alternated between odd and even irons. A few more putts before my tee time, and I'm off to fun times with good friends!

Always warm up before I head out for a round. Use the same routine every.

    Sand Wedge
    8 Iron
    6 Iron
    H1 3 Hybo
    Driver

Then go hit some putts for about 5-10 mins!
