ACUSHNET COMPANY ANNOUNCES MULTI-YEAR EQUIPMENT DEAL WITH ERNIE ELS

Expands Relationship with World's No. 3 Golfer to Include Titleist Golf Clubs and FootJoy Shoes. Continues Playing Titleist Golf Ball and Wearing Titleist Glove.

Fairhaven, MA (December 18, 2002) - Acushnet Company, manufacturer of Titleist, the #1 ball in golf, and FootJoy, the #1 shoe in golf, and Legends Inc., management company of Ernie Els, announced today it has agreed to an expanded multi-year equipment deal with the world's third-ranked golfer.  The five-year agreement, which commences January 1, 2003, provides for Els to continue playing Titleist golf balls and wearing a Titleist golf glove.  He will also play Titleist golf clubs, wear FootJoy shoes and carry a Titleist golf bag.  No other terms were disclosed.

Els has won 38 official events worldwide since turning professional in 1989, including 10 PGA Tour titles.  A true international player, he captured six titles this year, including the Heineken Classic in Australia, consecutive victories at the Genuity Championship on the PGA Tour and the Dubai Desert Classic in the United Arab Emirates, his third career major at the British Open, and the Cisco World Match Play.  Els, who finished fifth on the 2002 PGA Tour money list with over $3.2 million, pocketed another $2 million, the richest prize in golf, when he captured the Nedbank Challenge in his native South Africa earlier this month.

Wally Uihlein, Acushnet Company's Chairman and CEO commented, ''Ernie Els is a world class player and clearly one of the greatest representatives of the game of golf.  We are proud to have him as an ambassador for the Titleist and FootJoy brands.  Ernie has relied upon Titleist golf balls throughout his illustrious career, including his three major championships, and we are delighted that he has elected to play an even larger role in the success of the Acushnet Company family.   The next five to ten years promise great opportunity for Ernie to leave an even greater mark on golf's competitive landscape.   Our goal is to work with Ernie to develop and provide advanced technology equipment so the probability of him achieving his competitive goals are maximized.''

''I have been playing Titleist golf balls my entire career,'' said Els.  ''I am ecstatic about expanding that relationship with the Acushnet Company and working directly with individuals like Steve Mata, Bob Vokey and Scotty Cameron on optimizing the equipment that I will be playing.  I have always had a positive and beneficial relationship with the management and staff at Titleist and this is a natural, logical next step in my career where I can rely upon one company for all of my equipment needs.  No other golf equipment company can match the service and staff that Titleist and FootJoy provides on tour.''
