Okay TT.  The young man J.S. just won the Masters, and the young lady L.K. is one of the LPGA stars.

Both use Left Hand Low  when putting, how many of you are starting to tinker around using Left Hand Low?

Any success?  Does it feel different?  More confident?

Just FYI, I think J.S. is dominant left handed.  I could be wrong, maybe that's why he putts so well that way.

    Your thoughts....

    Hi Mark,

I switched last year to a left hand low grip and doubt I will ever go back. I saw improvement in my stroke immediately and it really didn't take long to get used to the new setup for me. All I can say is give it a try!

When I was a kid and played putt-putt / miniature golf I used to use the lead hand low method whenever I got to the 18th hole to win a free round. As an adult I find it funny whenever I see that grip used on tour. Makes me wish I stuck with it.

I tried the technique in my living room the other night. I had absolutely no feel for it, but the results were surprisingly straight. I did notice a tendency to hit way too hard though.

I've tinkered around with left-hand low on and off ever since I saw Billy Horschel using the technique in the FedeEx Cup Playoffs last season. It definitely feels a bit "wrong" at first, but it's very helpful in creating a good pendulum stroke. My biggest complaint with left-hand low is that I lost a lot of feel. It's not to say that you won't have any feel if you switch to left-hand low, but I think it will take some work to get used to so that you can get your putts the right distances. Some pros (sorry I can't recall any specific names at the moment) will use left-hand low on longer putts that require less finesse and then switch to a normal putting grip when they're closer to the hole or have something a bit more delicate. Regardless, it's worth a shot to try and see what you think about it, but make sure to give it a few goes at the practice green and then put a couple rounds under your belt with it before discarding it if that's what you decide to do.

I've played golf for almost 20 years now, and almost exclusively it was all done with left hand low.  I tinkered a bit with a claw grip for a couple of months about 12 years ago.  I personally, believe I have more feel this way and much better distance control, except the really long putts.  I mess around with standard grip on the putting greens at times, just to fuss around, but, I have never played a round of golf with a standard grip putt.

I think I remember now, and it is Rickie Fowler that plays left hand low for long putts and then switches to a standard grip when he gets close to the hole. It's possible I could still have that wrong, but I'm pretty sure I read that in Golf Digest or online somewhere.

    Hi Richard

LK putts left hand low for anything under 15 feet (for better consistency). She putts conventional for anything over 15 feet as this gives her better feel for distance and control

Think its easier when younger,  I have been tinkering, but it just feels weird after all these years.

I've notice that the roll is quite true like conventional style, but I kinda pull the putts to the left most of the time.  I haven't tried long putts for fear I'll get more messed up than where I'm at now.

What kind of grip are you all using, reverse baseball, interlocking, vardon., modified?

I tried the left hand low but never got comfortable enough to stick with it.

In a recent issue of the golf sport magazines, Dave Pelz recommended it for all amateur golfers.  Having switched sides of the ball from RH to LH - my natural side - when I stopped borrowing clubs, I'm used to holding the putter with either hand lower.  I haven't used (RH) lower on course yet, but practicing with it has improved my most treacherous putts - from 2-5 feet where I tended to push/pull those short strokes.  I have a putting mat inside, so I do practice that one club more than any other.

  11. Dude I just can't putt like that. I putt like a hack when I do that. Doesn't work well with super stroke either.

I've been left-hand low for about 15 or so years now. I'll never go back to conventional. If I remember correctly, when I first tinkered with left-hand low, distance control was the most difficult part. But give it some time and you'll get that control back before you know it. Left-hand low really helps....eliminates the right-hand "pop" in a putting stroke. I found that it really aided with getting putts on your intended line.  After 15 or so years, I've played around with going back, but just as you may have that "odd" initial feeling with left-hand low, the conventional method feels "odd" to me now.

Give it a try and have some patience. Good luck

I have putted left hand low excluslively for over 10 years.  I also have a Super Stroke grip and it doesn't hinder my putting at all.  One interesting thing of note, for me at least, was how J.S. drained his putts from 5 feet in.  Looked directly at the hole and drained the putt.  I tried this out with great success.  I used it for the first time in Tournament play this past Monday and drained every single putt 5 feet and in.  It was easy to pratice, and hard to put into play, but nerve racking come tournament time....but the end result is that it worked for me.  Good luck!!!

I've always putted left hand low. It has always worked for me and is probably the most consistent part of my game. If I ever have any issues come up, I know it's not my grip.
