I am looking for replacement irons for my 1987 Titlelist DTR's (1i - sw, no driver as it added strokes to my score).  I have been out of the game for a few years but am getting back to it as my children are grown and they play now.  At the time I stopped playing I was a 15 hcp with my short game mainly to blame.  I have always hit the DTR's very high and fairly straight to a push right with a better than average length.  I am looking to improve my game past the 15 hcp and want an iron that I can take to the next level.  I looked at png irons and was fitted to a blue dot which is .75deg upright.  Should I get the new Titlelist irons in a 1deg upright which should help stop the push right?

    So, AP1 or AP2?

    Hybrids?

    3 wood?

P.S. I am working hard on the short game and am trying out a 910D3 driver.

For a 15 handicap I would recommend the AP1's if you want to stick with titleist.  Maybe try 5-PW and  21 and 24 degree hybrid.  The Ap1's are built for a slightly higher handicap whose goal is to get it from the tee to green and not worry about working the ball.  I recommend the hybrids because they are (in my opinion) much easier to hit than the higher irons.  For 3 wood I would definitely try out the 910 or wait until February when the 913's come out.  Hope that this helps!

    Don,

The DTR were our most forgiving irons at the time of their release.  The 712 AP1 are currently the most forgiving irons, but the 712 AP2 could also be a great option.  The 712 AP2 would provide more workability, which is something you may be looking for.  Both sets come in 3-PW and a GW, but can be ordered individually.  With the new technology that is involved in the irons as well as the metal woods, it would be a great idea to consult a Club Fitter to find the best performing and most consistent set makeup for your game.  Feel free to contact Team Titleist at 1-888-TITLEIST for help finding a Club Fitter or click on the link below.

Eye 2 Blue Dot has similar lie angles to Titleist Standard Lie.  Because of the spacing of 3/4* between clubs, Blue Dot is  as follows: .5 flat at 5 iron, matches 7 iron, .75* upright at PW.

I play my AP1 7 iron .5* upright and my 8-PW 1* upright.  I also had a dynamic fitting and I had Eye 2 Blue Dot.

I also have a set of DTRs that I've owned since 1991. Prior to that I was using a set of used muscle-back blades, so the DTRs were a welcome change because of their forgiveness. I do plan to upgrade (eventually) if only for the reason that the last time I had them re-gripped, the old curmudgeons at the golf shop tried to guess who was president when I bought them. The other reason I'm going to upgrade is because I have never been able to hit the driver from this model set--the head is smaller than most of today's 3-woods--so I've hesitated using my driver from day one.

That said, I would have thought that a comparable replacement to the DTRs would be the CBs, the current cavity back model. Your thoughts?

I think the AP1 is a closer fit since they are also a cast and not forged head.
