    Hi Kevin,

I had my left knee done last August and I played up until that day and it hurt every time I played. Getting my TKR (Total Knee Replacement) was the best thing I ever did. It hurt like crazy when I had it done, but I worked hard to get better and played golf in 5 weeks, which I was told was unheard of. So yes I would get it done and the sooner the better.

    Kevin,

Make sure first you need a total.  I thought I did, but only need a partial.  Played up until the day before, and then was back on the golf course in two weeks with a cart, and three weeks I was walking once again.  I couldn't be happier with the partial knee replacement. Wish I would have done it sooner. Best of luck!!!

I definitely need a total knee, actually need 2 knees and 2 hips. LOL

Been a right below knee amputee for 24 yrs and over time I have worn everything out, been putting everything off as long as possible, but the left knee pain has became unbearable and definitely starting to effect my golf.

    Thanks, Kevin

I blew out both of my knees from freestyle BMX about 10 years ago. I have been afraid to get anything done about it, and I have just dealt with the pain. Some days are good, some aren't. I feel like I will have to wait until it is unbearable before I do anything about it. However, it is good to hear that you had a quick recovery.

    Kevin,

Had a total knee done in July, 2011.  Played my next full round in Dec.,2011 per doctors orders.  I also had a cyst in the bone that required they create a hole and cover it with a bone piece and a screw so my recovery was longer than some.  I am glad that I did it as I am able to walk without a huge limp. Probably should have done it sooner, but I am kind of stubborn about things like that.  I have had 4 other knee procedures over the years, so my one main piece of advice is to listen to your doctor and do what he says.  There is no sense in pushing the recovery just to play and then re-injure it and be off for a longer time period.  I did not have a lot of pain and was up walking with a walker in a couple of days, so if you're in any kind of shape you should be just fine.  Remember, don't push it and do all of your therapy.  Good luck and keep the T/T nation posted.

  7. My friend recently had both knees replaced. One in October and the other in December. He's now back to hitting on a range. No pain. And he's actually increased his swing speed. The pain was becoming unbearable and it was affecting his ability to play and enjoy the game. But now with PT and hard work, he's looking forward to a new golf season with new knees and a renewed love of the game.

Consider it an option if it is that bad for you. I don't think you'd regret doing it.

Good topic........I know knee replacement is in my future, so it's good to hear from other members who had it done and how it has gone in recovery.  Thanks

    Hi,

I'm an orthopaedic surgeon in the Netherlands and also a fanatic golf player.

In general, walking and biking are quite ideal activities for peaple who underwent total knee replacement surgery.

We don't see special problems in patients who play golf (18h) with a total knee!

    Good luck,

    Dr Frank van Bommel

I have had total knee replacement on both knees within the past 5 years.  I'm 62 yrs old and have been golfing for 50 years.  My handicap used to be under 10 for 18 holes.  My passion for the game is still high and love to play as much as possible.  For sure my swing isn't the same.  The "new" knees don't have any pain at all but they certainly don't move (especially sideways) while you turn in your swing.  Been having  problems with the driver especially but irons and putting decent.  Will continue to tinker with different ideas on my swing/stance to make it easier to turn. Thoughts you may have appreciated .. may have to just be satisfied to golf without pain and enjoy!
