I struggle hitting my 5 iron a lot and I want to try to get better with it instead of going straight to a hybrid. I find that I often make clean contact with it, but the ball just doesnt carry. It also stays very low to the ground. Im almost better off hitting a 6 iron short of the green or a 4 hybrid long. This is my only iron that I have this problem with and it's really bothering me. Any tips?

Choke down an inch on the 4H.  Get a 5H.  Former is a lot cheaper.

Check with a swing coach - the 5I may just be accentuating a swing flaw not as apparent with shorter clubs.

Get fitted for a higher launching shaft.  Probably the worst idea.

Billy, it sounds as if you are mis-hitting the 5 iron too low on the face. Try putting a piece of masking tape on the face and hit a couple of balls to see where you are striking the face.

Get on a monitor with your iron and a hybrid and let that dictate....  I guarantee you can use your hybrid for more purposes than an iron..

I fixed a flaw in my swing, and got the ball flight up pretty high. Still not getting the distance

Sure, I got one for ya, Billy!

First, make sure the ball is off your front foot and that your head is staying behind the ball.  (Careful however: make sure you're not making a reverse pivot as you do this!  Always get your weight on your left foot on the downswing!)  Then, ensure that your left shoulder is above your right.  And of course, as the great G. Player once said, "Finish high to hit it high!"  I am sure that if you follow these steps, you will be able to get that 5-iron in the air.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!!

    Billy,

For distance I would suggest that you spring your hips and left leg forward on the downswing and then the rest of the body. When I do this the ball goes about ten yards further than without it and I'm hitting it straighter because I'm not trying as hard to over power it.
