I have been playing a set of DCI 981 Irons for 10 years. When I was custom fit for these irons, the pro ordered them +1/4", thus my 5 iron is 38" and my 7 Iron is 37". I noticed that these are the current standard length of the AP1 and AP2 irons. Have the standards gotten longer? I am 6'4" and thought I needed longer clubs, but now I am not so sure.

    Thanks.

Most OEM's have gotten a tad longer in the ever increasing distance race. Also, each OEM will offer clubs in their own 'standard' length so a 7 iron shaft could be as much as an inch different between brands.

If you fitting was 10 years ago, I would like at getting refit. Swing changes, posture, growth could have all changed over the years. Just because you are tall, while its likely, doesn't neccesaryily mean that you should be playing clubs + clubs.

  3. Hi Bill -

Starting in the early 2000s our standard lengths began to increase .25" - .5" inches over previous generations.  Your 981s are right on the cusp of this change.  If you are interested in purchasing a new set of AP1 or AP2 irons we recommend that you visit a local Titleist fitting partner.  We would not necessarily recommend that you try to transfer your current specs over to something newer.  If your current set-up works well you might be OK but since its been 10 years and product has changed and your swing may have changed we recommend a fitting.  If you need assistance finding a local Titleist partner please call us directly or visit www.FittingWorks.com/findafitter.aspx

Interestingly, I was fit for the AP2 irons with 1/2" long shaft and 1 degree up. My DCI irons are +1/4 and 4 up. That might explain why I have been playing these big sweeping hooks!  :-)

  6. Thank you for the updates Bill.  Its seems your fitting experience went well and you may have found the right new tools for your game!

Thanks, Nick. It was a good experience, and even got a little lesson out of the deal. I am ordering my AP2's tomorrow. Next on the horizon...one of those sweet looking Midsize staff bags to put them in. :-)
