Listening to a podcast that was comparing multiple urethane/tour balls across 3-4 OEMs, one tidbit caught my ear. With the robot swinging at 85 mph, the longest ball was the (2019) Pro-V1x. Due to the higher launch and spin, it carried longer than the other tour balls.

To me, that puts the argument needing the "speed" to hit a tour ball to rest. The X may be Bubba's ball, but it can be the ball for me at roughly 30 mph slower swing speed. They also find that softer balls will always have a slower ball speed than a firmer. In spite of the claims from at least 2 if not 3 other OEMs that lower speed players need a softer ball to compress it with driver.

As golfers we tend to focus on replacing drivers every 1-2 years but almost never get fit for balls. For the one piece of equipment used for 70+ strokes a round it makes sense to try more than 1 line with each release to find the best performance.

Do you know what other balls they were comparing?

Z-Star X and B-series ("for higher speeds"), and I don't remember for sure if the TP-5 was part of the discussion. It was a MySpy podcast and their testing shows softer invariably leads to shorter distances. Not that too hard of a ball won't be a bad feel but at least for robots, the softer versions of tour balls don't outperform the X at any speed. My take-away, buy whatever ball performs the way you want (window/feel) but don't buy into that you need to be pigeon-holed by the marketing arm. Tru-feel may be the best ball for your game, but Titleist didn't say because you are this, you should play that.

It was on a podcast for Mygolfspy from sometime in 2020. It definitely was not from the 1 - 2021 podcast they have released. Having listened to 10-12 podcasts in the last week, not sure which one. Information for some of the comments from what I remember hearing seem to have come from this review -

The podcast only mentioned the primary tour balls with some mention of one DTC ball.
